Yes, you can change your branch after completing 1st year. You will be asked to fill in your preferences. But you should note that changing branches can be difficult. The cutoff required for branch change is pretty high. For branches like CSE, you will need a CGPA of around 9.75. For EE, the required CGPA is around 9.3-9.4. Other than cutoff it depends on the number of vacant seats in the branch you are applying for.

The rule for changing branch at IIT BHU is the same as other IITs. It is allowed at the beginning of the 2nd and 3rd semesters. To be eligible for branch change you have to pass all the courses for the previous semester and your SIP should be more than 8.0. The merit of a student is determined by the Performance Index calculated on the basis of grades of Institute Science and Institute Engineering courses. In the case of a tie, the SIP is considered. If the SIP of the two students is also equal then the decision is made on the basis of All India Rank of JEE(Advanced).

Students can only change their branch from one discipline to another within their respective program, i.e, students of 4-year programs can change their discipline within 4-year programs and students of 5-year programs can change branch within 5-year programs.

While this is possible in other IITs also, the probability of getting your branch changed is more in IIT BHU. Let’s assume that there are 100 students in CSE branch. So, now if you are in IITs other than BHU, then the number of students who can change their branch to CSE is 5. However, in the case of IIT BHU, if there are 100 seats to be filled but for some reason or the other only 97 students took admission or some students dropped off the course, then there would be a total of 13 seats available for competition.
