You should consider your branch of preference along with your future plans while choosing the right branch for yourself. If you aren’t sure you can look at the placement rates and packages for both institutes.

Here are the salary packages for the branches based on recent placement highlights.

IIT Bombay Chemical Engineering average CTC - INR 12.32 LPA.
IIT Bhubaneswar CSE average CTC - INR 16.27 LPA.

CS definitely offers more scope, but even if you are choosing IIT Bombay, your opportunities aren’t limited to your subject. You can put in the work in your first year to change your branch.

IIT Bombay is one of the older IITs and offers more facilities in terms of infrastructure, placement, cultural events, location, etc compared to the new IITs.

IIT Bombay ranks 3rd according to the NIRF 2020 rankings. Chemical Engineering from IIT Bombay is more research-oriented and this IIT offers great exposer and placement offer to the students. In 2019 the Chemical Engineering department got 157 internship offers.

The past recruiters from the chemical engineering department were ITC, Unilever, Piramal, etc. Chemical Engineers from IIT Bombay get a starting salary of 1-4 lakhs approximately per month which is as high as the packages Computer, Electrical or Mechanical Engineers get.

CSE is a more practical based subject with students focussing more on their practical knowledge and implementation. Placement in IIT Bhubaneswar is not up to the mark due to its new establishment. But according to 2019 placement highlights, CSE had a 100% placement rate.

Chemical Engineering in IIT Bombay is a better option because of the institute’s reputation and placement records. CSE in IIT Bhubaneswar lacks an adequate amount of faculty. So if you have an eligibility to study in IIT Bombay it should be your first choice.
