Which of the two should I choose: IIT Dharwad EE or NITK Surathkal CSE?
Rather than choosing between institutes, choose the branch you are inclined towards. Determining your future prospects is an indispensable factor when choosing your college. You need to find out what you are willing to do after getting your degree; pursuing higher studies or getting employed.
Had I been in your place, I would have chosen NIT Surathkal because of the branch CSE you are getting. In this high-tech era, CSE is in full bloom and is one of the most coveted branches. Someone who is getting CSE at an NIT should never give that chance up for any other branch that too at a new IIT.
Here is why one should go for NIT Surathkal
- NIT Surathkal fairs are better than IIT Dhanwad in terms of faculty, infrastructure, and placements.
- NIT Surathkal has a stunning campus with its own private beach.
- IIT Dhanwad does not even have half the companies that visit NITK Surathkal for placements.
- NITK Surathkal is a well-established institute often compared to the IITs while IIT Dhanwad is yet to make its mark.
The following points prove enough that NITK Surathkal CSE is better than IIT Dhanbad EE. In fact, I would have chosen IIT Dhanwad CSE over electrical or other core branches at old IITs. however, my answer is not directed towards someone who has a particular interest in Electrical, for them IIT EE is the best.

IIT Dharwad is a relatively newly established institute and the first batch of engineering graduates in 2020 only, it is yet to be ranked by NIRF. While NITK Surathkal is one of the oldest NITs of the country and is ranked 33rd by NIRF for Engineering.

Curriculum
IIT Dharwad
- Since it is a new college, it is mentored by old colleges like IIT-K, IIT-M and students are even taught by SWAYAM courses offered by professors from the old IITs.
- Control systems, Electrical Power Quality, Network theory, fundamentals of microprocessors, IOT are some important subjects included in the curriculum.
NITK
- The faculty-student ratio at NITK is 1:35.
- Along with theoretical knowledge, practical coding sessions and hackathons are regularly organised to encourage students to develop an excellent grasp at programming.
Placement
NITK
- The CSE branch has a placement rate of 100%.
- 200+ companies took part in the recruitment drive with top recruiters being Amazon, IBM, Google, Accenture, etc.
- Highest CTC offered was 84 LPA
- Average salary package received was 14 LPA
IIT Dharwad
- Average placement rate for EE was around 60%
- Highest offer bagged was 12 LPA
- Average salary package received was in the range 5-7 LPA
- In 2019, average stipend received was 20,000
- Top recruiters were Nasdaq, Adobe, TCS, Infosys, etc. amongst 20+ other companies
Campus
- NITK- Spread over 100 acre area, it is a very beautiful campus and has it’s very own private beach as well. It has state-of-art-infrastructure with modern smart classrooms and well equipped labs and sports facilities.
- IIT Dharwad- It currently functions in a transit campus hence all facilities cannot be availed as of now but the proposed campus is supposed to be spread across 400 acres and full of ample opportunities for students. Electrical labs are an essential part of the course but since this is the transit campus, labs are not completely equipped.
NIT Surathkal or NITK is one of the premier engineering institutes of the country and has a strong alumni network and industry connect. Training sessions are even organised by industry giants like IBM, CoCubes. IIT Dharwad being a new institute needs time and resources to make its mark. Apart from this, computer science is the most sought after skill-set at present and attracts lucrative offers. Hence, students should make an informed choice according to their discretion.
