2nd gen IITs like Patna and Bhubaneswar are comparatively lower ranked than Roorkee, Guwahati or Kharagpur. However, they are making continuous progress in terms of both academics and placements. Computer Science Engineering requires basic infrastructure, which is well provided at these 2nd gen IITs.

Here are the 2023 B.Tech CSE placement statistics at IIT Bhubaneswar:

Particulars Statistics (2023)
Average Salary INR 25.18 LPA
Highest Salary INR 55.75 LPA
Median Salary INR 20.31 LPA
Lowest Salary INR 9 LPA
% Batch placed 100 %

As evident from the table above, IIT Bhubaneswar records quite decent placements in B.Tech CSE, which is equal to (and sometimes more than) the placements of lower branches at top IITs.

Thus, I would recommend you opt for CSE at 2nd gen IITs like Patna and Bhubaneswar over choosing a lower branch at top IITs like Roorkee, Guwahati, Kharagpur.

B.Tech Computer Science Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Patna (2021)

Infrastructure isn’t a key parameter for CSE. So, if you are interested in pursuing Computer Science, you can consider 2nd generation IITs like Patna, and Bhubaneswar. The quality of academics won’t vary much compared to older IITs.

For CSE, what matters more is your knowledge and skills, rather institute name. If you are among the top 10% of your class, you can compete with top rankers from old IITs.

Talking about institutes like IIT Patna, IIT Bhubaneshwar, IIT Roorkee, and other IITs, they are all part of and contribute to the list of India’s best institutions.

Computer Science Engineering does not require much infrastructure except the basic, hence it can be pursued at any 2nd generation IIT too. Anyway, if you really evaluate all of these IITs then the 2nd gen IITs are no longer considered as new institutes. They have established themselves in the last ten years and have successfully made their mark. Being a part of IIT, the 2nd gen IITs also provide their students with fairly good placement rates and packages. In 2019, there was 100% placement for CSE with average CTC 11.4 LPA in IIT Bhubaneswar. In IIT Patna a total of 50 students from CSE was placed with average CTC 16.76 LPA.

Though pursuing Mechanical Engineering from first-gen IITs like IIT Roorkee, IIT Guwahati, or IIT Kharagpur would be more beneficial because being the older institutes from the rest, these institutes have a better atmosphere and the more experienced team of professors. The more experienced faculty at these IITs for Mechanical Engineering eventually adds up a lot to the student’s experience at the institute as well. Studying at an older institute also offers better opportunities, both in the case of internships and placements.

So, the choice of IIT should be based entirely on which course you are interested in.
