IIT Kanpur was established on November 2, 1959. Professor P. K. Kelkar was the first director of IIT Kanpur, and he started his term on December 14, 1959. The first batch of B.Tech students was admitted in August 1960.

Over the past few decades, IIT Kanpur has proved to be one of the top technical institutes in India and across the world. In the 2024 QS World University Rankings, IIT Kanpur is ranked # 2 in India in Mathematics and Data Science. Moreover, it is consistently ranked #4 among the top engineering colleges in India as per the current NIRF Rankings.
