Almost all IITs are excellent engineering colleges providing the best education and amenities. Yet there might be some comparisons that can be drawn based on common aspects like choice, infrastructure, and geographical location. Eventually, it’s a matter of your preferences and not the institute's worth.

For example, if you are someone who considers Academics the most important factor to determine the credibility of an institute, then IIT Kanpur is the best choice for you. It has the toughest grading system and the entire focus is on studies. So if you are excellent in academics, you will remain at the top here.

Both institutes face a certain level of locational disadvantage but IIT Kanpur is still slightly better in this aspect.

Mechanical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT KGP)

Both are reputed IITs. However, IIT KGP offers a slightly better campus life and alumni network. Academics, faculties, and infrastructure at both campuses are similar.

Both the IITs have great placement records. IIT Kharagpur placements 2022 concluded with the highest CTC of INR 2.4 CPA. While the highest CTC offered during IIT Kanpur placements 2022 was INR 2.06 CPA.

You can choose any of these institutes, according to your convenience.

IIT Kharagpur and IIT Kanpur are on par with each other. To give you a clearer picture, here are some points:

According to QS Ranking 2020, IIT Kharagpur stands at 281 and IIT Kanpur at 291.
According to NIRF Ranking, IIT Kharagpur stands at 4th position and IIT Kanpur at 5th position.
The campus of IIT Kharagpur is spread across 2100 acres. The campus of IIT Kanpur is spread over 1055 acres.
In terms of academics, IIT Kanpur surpasses IIT Kharagpur but it is easier to maintain a CGPA above 7 at IIT Kharagpur.
Even though both the campuses are not in urban areas, the area inside campus feels no less than a city.
There is minimal difference in placements.
The alumni network of IIT Kharagpur is better than IIT Kanpur and thus you will have better chances of getting a scholarship to study abroad. Famous personalities like Sundar Pichai, Vinod Gupta, Ajit Jain, Arvind Kejriwal, Rahul Jaimini are alumni of IIT Kharagpur.
Since both the campuses are old campus, both are equal in terms of campus life.
Both are unique in terms of architectural design. IIT Kharagpur has Swedish design and IIT Kanpur has American design.
