Kashi Utkarsh is an initiative of IIT BHU students. Through this initiative, they try to help people living in the slums near Varanashi. Due to poverty and poor hygiene, the kids in the slums have limited scope for development.

Some of the activities of KU are as below.

  • On weekends students travel to the slum areas and teach the kids for Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya admission test. They also persuade parents to send their kids to schools. This may sound easy but many parents need a lot of convincing and committed efforts.
  • KU with the help of IIT BHU students helps raise funds to pay the school fees of these kids.
  • KU also raised funds for special emergencies. For instance, a few years back KU helped raise funds for the operation of a girl with a hole in her heart. The operation happened in Bangalore. Few students and Professors took care of the kid through the whole process.

Kashi Utkarsh is an initiative by the students of IIT (BHU) to upgrade the living standard of the people living in cramped slums. Kids live in very dilapidated conditions, where even 2 square meals in a day are scarce. The environment of the slums is unhealthy- both socially and in terms of hygiene, which hinders their sustained growth. That is because these people continuously move around with their families in search of employment and shelter.

Presently, due to limited resources, this initiative is confined to slums around IIT BHU. But the initiative will be expanded and work for the improvement of the other slums in nearby districts of Varanasi. Every weekend members of Kashi Utkarsh go to the nearby slums and tutor the children. They also encourage the parents of these kids to send them to school for proper education. They go the extra mile by paying their school fees(partially or entirely). Recently, course materials for these kids were designed to help them study for the entrance exam of Jawahar Navodya Vidyala. The club members strive hard to make the lives of underprivileged kids worthy by being their mentors-cum-friends.
