Which institute is better for M.Sc. Physics IIT Kanpur or IIT Madras?

RP
Raveesha Pandey Posted On : July 30th, 2021
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras
Both IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras are excellent institutes for M.Sc in Physics, considering the student is actually interested in learning the subject to the core.
The points below give a brief overview of IIT Madras, stating some of the advantages of choosing it over IIT Kanpur.
? Professors will help you to get involved in challenging projects during your course, with specializations in complex topics like cosmology, etc.
? The main motto of the faculties of IIT Madras is to build their students to at least a certain limit of knowledge, over anything else.
? Most of the professors have a solid foundation in advanced concepts of theoretical physics, for example, Prof. M V Satyanarayana, Prof. M Pattabiraman, Prof. V Balakrishnan, Prof. A Lakshminarayan, etc.
? Although the level of questions set during the exams at IIT Madras is always up to the mark, almost no students fail in the institute due to the teaching facilities offered throughout the year.
? Talking about the campus of IIT Madras, it is extremely beautiful, being close to the sea as well.
Therefore, although both the institutes are equally excellent, IIT Madras can be a better option for students interested in Physics, considering the points listed above.

IIT Madras has a research park that only a few Indian colleges have, it’s the reason why it is often called the Stanford University of India. IIT and IISc are the most deemed universities of India yet only IIT Madras has its own research park.

It is about 1.2 million square feet. Prof. Ashok Jhunjhunwala, an electrical engineering professor, laid the foundation of a research park on the campus of IIT Madras.

  • Startups like Ather Energy, the electric vehicle company, and ZOHO were both founded lead by the alumni of IIT Madras. These are technology-based startups.
  • There are several e-commerce websites but building a company with Qualcomm, and many others.
  • IIT Madras helps students to connect with the industry and build real-life projects. There are more than 1300+ patents filed with the research park at IIT Madras and more than 200 startups have been into the action and are financed by the companies like Intel, Crown special purpose, and specialty.

Why is the Engineering Design Dept. in IIT Madras considered "different" from other departments?

TB
Tushar Banerjee Posted On : March 28th, 2023
studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras

The engineering design department at IIT Madras is considered different from the other departments and rightfully so. Some features that make this department different from others are

  • This branch has no bachelor's degree and just offers a dual degree program not subject to branch change, unlike other branches.
  • This department has very few common courses like physics and thermodynamics. There are also no interdisciplinary courses, no pH lab and the Math is also different from other departments.
  • The second year has no option for HS or math electives
  • There is a compulsory linear algebra course, which is an elective for the CS fourth year and is a major drawback for ED students.
  • Very limited electives are offered in consecutive years and a large number of basic mandatory courses for design are offered.

All these points portray the rigor and dynamism of the curriculum. While many may not agree, this course has its own perks also which are sometimes overlooked because of the rigor of the course

  • Graphics Arts: These courses include sketching, shading, painting, clay modeling, and plaster molding and are fun to learn.
  • Product Design labs: These labs impart real-life knowledge of product design, architecture, development, etc.
  • Versatile electives: The program offers a wide variety of subjects to choose from that include almost everything like; strength of materials, FEM, fluid mechanics, thermo, Microprocessors and controllers, control systems, etc.
  • Internship: The entire 4th year is spent in an industrial internship, and thus students don't have to get any credited internships during summers.

There are two sides to every coin, and so does this department. There certainly are many shortcomings but on the flip side, the perks it offers are often more than enough to attract the best talents.

How are the placements for an MTech in Industrial Mathematics and Scientific Computing at IIT Madras?

RM
Ritika Mukharjee Posted On : March 30th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IITM)

Both the Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) program at IT Hyderabad and the Mechanical Engineering program at IIT Madras are highly esteemed and have strengths and weaknesses. Eventually, it depends on your interests and career goals.

You should go for IIT Hyderabad, EEE if

  • You have a passion for electrical and electronic systems,
  • You want to enter the IT sector with your priority being a high-paying job. This is because IIT Hyderabad has a relatively flexible curriculum and allows you to opt for some CSE electives.

You should go for IIT Madras Mechanical if

  • You are inclined toward Mechanical systems
  • You have zero interest in coding/programming
  • You want to do MBA, IAS, or other higher studies in foreign universities
  • You want to experience a more dynamic and lively campus life

It's important to research both programs and contact the current batch of seniors to get a

a better understanding of the curriculum and career opportunities.

What was someone's experience with the IIT Madras TI sponsored analog electronics MS program exam and interview?

AR
Apoorva Roy Posted On : July 23rd, 2021
M.Tech (Computer Science) from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (2018)

Each year Texas Instruments (TI) India sponsors some students for the analog electronics MS program at IIT Madras. One of my friends went through the whole process and here are some of the useful snippets of her experience.

  • Written Test - There will be a written test first. It is a two-hour test covering many interesting topics from analog electronics such as OPAMPS, BJTS, MOSFET, RLC circuits. But instead of straightforward questions, they will have questions with various combinations of the topics. In total there were 20 questions in this test.
  • Presentation - Then an HR from Texas Instruments (TI) India will present you a PPT. There will also be some seniors who were selected the previous year. They will share their experiences.
  • Technical Interview - After that from the 40 odd students who took the written test around 10 will be called for the technical interview. The interview will most probably start after lunch. The panel of three asked my friend to solve the questions which they had given in the written test, but she answered incorrectly. They will also ask some other additional questions as well.
  • HR Interview - Finally there will be an HR round of interviews, where you would be asked about yourself, your strengths, weaknesses, past experiences, and many other things. After about 1 hour of the interview, you would get your provisional admission letters along with a TI scientific calculator.

In the interview, they are looking for your thought process and your approach to the problem rather than the exact correct answer as my friend did give a wrong answer but still got selected.

Also, the professors and the interviewers were very helpful and will guide you. The questions in the tests and the interviews will test you very thoroughly so you should have a stronghold over the subject. You can go through the preparatory materials posted on the website and the electronics book by Sedra and Smith.

Why some of the IITs such as IIT-M IIT-B are still called as IIT Madras & Bombay even though the cities have been changed to Chennai and Mumbai?

A
Admin Posted On : July 1st, 2024

IIT Bombay and IIT Madras were established in 1958 and 1959 respectively. Both these institutions have emerged as highly renowned centers of Engineering studies in India. Both IIT Bombay and IIT Madras are more than an institution, they are in fact a brand with a high relevance and strong network in the industry.

The ‘Bombay’ or ‘Madras’ is a part of this brand name. This is not the address of these institutions, as both these cities have long been renamed as Mumbai and Chennai respectively. The institution name has not been altered because of the prestige and legacy carried by both these titles.

Thus, IIT Bombay and IIT Madras haven’t been renamed over the years.

Which one should I choose, IISc Bangalore or IIT Madras?

AS
Aditi Sengupta Posted On : March 28th, 2023

There are two aspects of an engineering degree; a corporate and a research-oriented outlook. If you are someone who wants to enter the corporate world, IIT Madras has much better opportunities. There are a number of companies that come with decent roles. The campus life at IIT Madras with personality development through activities and fests is much more suitable for those aiming for corporate life.

However, if you are targeting the research area, no institute has better facilities than IISc Bangalore. Many IITians apply every year for a summer internship at IISc. the quality of projects you will be working on combined with the top-notch faculty guidance offers a smooth pathway for higher studies at top foreign universities.

However, if you aren't sure of your area of interest yet, choose IIT Madras as it excels in both corporate lives as well as research facilities. Thus you will have many options to choose from.
