UB
Udit Bhatiya Posted On : January 16th, 2023
Works at MBAP Education

The class 10 and 12th marks are not directly linked to the shortlisting of GD/PI and even for Final Selection in IIM Shillong.

IIM Shillong has not defined the weightage for academics for 2022 MBA admissions. An expected set of scores, for students from different categories, is as follows:

Category

Class 10 marks

Class 12 marks

General

80

80

EWS

80

80

SC

55

55

ST

50

50

PWD

50

50

Candidates who fulfill the above cutoff criteria will be considered for shortlisting into PI rounds and will be segregated as per their discipline in graduation.

How good is IIM Raipur, and what is the position amongst the six new IIMs and Shillong?

AS
Abhijeet Singh Posted On : January 16th, 2023
MBA from Indian Institute of Management Shillong (2019)

Before I compare IIM Raipur with the 6 new IIMs, let me clarify one thing. IIM Shillong belongs to a whole different league so IIM Raipur can be compared to the new IIMs only.

    1. IIM Shillong: It lies at a different level as it is oldest among the new IIMs and is almost considered among the older IIMs. The placement figures are a testament to the fact.
    2. IIM Ranchi: Next in line comes IIM Ranchi which functions under the mentorship of IIM Calcutta. Its placement opportunities are much better than new IIMs.
    3. IIM Trichy: Another fast growing IIM is IIM Trichy.
    4. IIM Raipur/Udaipur: It is only after Trichy that Raipur is placed. Being situated in the capital city of Chattisgarh, Raipur has a location advantage over Kashipur and Rohtak. The faculty is also top notch and the airports provide connectivity to various parts of the country.
    5. IIM Rohtak/Kashipur: Both these IIMs are at the same level. Kashipur faced a slight location disadvantage, decreasing the changes of guest lectures and Industry and Business Leader interactions. Rohtak has a location advantage of being situated near to the capital but its placements are the worst of all the 6 IIMs.

So one should choose Raipur out of Kashipur/ Raipur/ Udaipur.

Can a general category student convert IIM Indore or Shillong at 92 percentile? (With a reasonably okay WAT-PI) (with good academics but as a fresher)

PG
Priyanshu Gupta Posted On : January 16th, 2023
MBA from Indian Institute of Management Shillong (2019)

Yes, considering your profile, you can convert IIM Indore and Shillong at 92 percentile. Your excellent academic record will compensate for your CAT score and increase your chances of getting selected.

Since you are a fresher I will suggest you analyze your career aspirations before choosing a college. What made you choose IIM only. Is it just because you want to get placed and earn a high salary? I suggest you try broadening your career options by identifying your area of interest. Some career options with their suitable colleges are

  • If you want to go for Mass Media, you can join Jamia or Prahlad School in Mumbai.
  • If you want to build a career in the Hospitality Sector, the Oberoi School of Management is an excellent choice.
  • If you are willing to become a CEO or a Risk Professional then Globally Risk Management Institute in Gurgaon is the right place for you.

So look from a broader perspective and choose your career first. Once you are sure of that, you can choose the most suitable college and prepare accordingly.

What CAT percentile is required for FMS Delhi or the IIM I, L, or Shillong, if you are in the reservation category?

SR
Sunil Roger Posted On : January 16th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Management Shillong

There are three types of reservation categories OBC SC And ST. I have tabulated the CAT cutoff for these categories below

Institute

OBC

SC

ST

FMS Delhi

39.991 (Composite Score)

32.452 (Composite Score)

24.257 (Composite Score)

IIM Indore

80

60

50

IIM Lucknow

82

70

65

IIM Shillong

75

60

50

FMS Delhi calculates a Composite Score whereas Shillong has sectional cutoff. Your academics play a major role in calculating the composite score. Some tips for candidates from SC and ST categories are

  • Leave the questions you don’t know the answers of
  • Attempt at least 7 questions from each section accurately.
  • The questions you have a vague idea of can be written through guesswork.

If your academic record is below average, answer more questions accurately to compensate for that.

Which one is better for the long term: an MBA from IIM Shillong, IIM Trichy or SJMSoM IIT B?

AP
Amritansh Pandey Posted On : January 16th, 2023
MBA from Indian Institute of Management Shillong (2019)

IIT B is particularly known for its specialization in Operations. Although it has a decent specialization in other domains like Marketing and IT as well, it is for Operations that people usually choose it. Some consider IIM Shillong or Trichy a better option for Finance. But I personally think that SJMSom IIT B is overall a better choice.

I cannot choose one between IIM Trichy and Shillong as both are at an equal level at this point. Despite being new, Trichy has managed to be in the league of Shillong. It has been growing at a fast pace and may even surpass IIM Shillong in the near future.

So if I am to rank the above options it has to be

SJMSom>IIM Shillong=IIM Trichy

Which is better for a fresher, IIM Shillong or MDI Gurgaon?

PD
Pratik Das Posted On : January 16th, 2023
MBA from Indian Institute of Management Shillong (2019)

Be it fresher or not, MDI Gurgaon is definitely a better option than IIM Shillong. I have drawn a comparison between the 2 B Schools based on the following parameters

Fees: The fees of the PGPM program at IIM Shillong stands at INR 14.6 Lakhs whereas that of MDI Gurgaon is INR 24,47,400. While some might comment on the huge difference in fees, the ROI at MDI Gurgaon is worth it.

Placements: The table below compares the placement statistics of both B Schools.

Location: MDI Gurgaon has a location advantage over IIM Shillong as it is located in the commercial hub in contrast to the North-Eastern location of IIM Shillong.

Though I have given my opinion about MDI being better, the final decision is yours to make.

For International students who are targeting the PGP flagship program, the cutoff is as follows

80

DA

50

So a good GMAT score for an International student is anything above 700.

For the Executive program too, a GMAT score of 700+ is a good target. If your profile is average you can target a higher GMAT score.

Does the small batch size at IIM Shillong provide a considerable advantage during placements, compared to other IIMs?

SS
Subhrajyoti Saha Posted On : January 16th, 2023
PGDM from Indian Institute of Management Shillong (Graduated 2018)

Yes, the small-batch size at IIM Shillong or that at any new IIM provides a considerable advantage during placements. The older IIMs have a larger batch size therefore the competition is also tough. So an average profile will get an average CTC only. Whereas at IIM Shillong, the small batch size means lesser competition and better placement opportunities. With less talented people around, someone with even an average profile can get a high package.

The small batch size can be beneficial only if you have a decent profile. A below-average profile can not get you a good package even at a college with a smaller batch size like IIM Shill

How good is IIM Shillong for HR?

KA
Kshitij Arora Posted On : January 16th, 2023
completed MBA in 2014

One of the major USPS of IIM Shillong is the diversity of electives it offers. Anyone who hasn’t decided on a domain can have a peek into the various angles of the business sector and then make a healthy decision.

The courses offered are flexible, comprising a blend of Marketing, HR, Operations, Finance, etc. This enables the students not to specialize in a single domain only. As far as HR is concerned, I have listed down some highlights of this particular domain at IIM Shillong.

  • IIM Shillong offers an impeccable variety of courses ranging from Organizational pathologies to HR tools.
  • The faculty includes some widely acclaimed personalities in the field. Some renowned members of the permanent faculty include Prof R.Dwivedi and Prof S.Kakoty. These professors just don’t impart HR knowledge rather they ingrain it in us.
  • The guest lectures are augmented by highly honored professors like Prof M Deshmukh. He gave an overview of the HR domain through activities like designing a dream job. He bought in specialists to teach some important fundamentals.
  • The HR clubs at IIM Shillong like UsHR keep alive the student-driven factor. The club conducts quizzes and article writing competitions to facilitate self-learning among the students.
  • You can also opt for CIS. This is a thesis you write about a suggested topic. It enhances your previous knowledge and exposes you to various dimensions of HR.

At the end of the program, you will have developed a detailed knowledge of terms, concepts and insights.

How do I reach IIM-Shillong?

JD
Jakil Dedhiya Posted On : January 16th, 2023
MBA from Indian Institute of Management Shillong (2019)

The only means of transport to reach IIM Shillong is a cab. You can book it privately or go for a shared one as well depending on your budget. The duration of the journey is around 3-4 hours on any typical day. There are two routes to reach IIM Shillong

  1. Take a shared cab from Airport/Railway station and take a stop at Police Bazar. From there you can take another cab to IIM Shillong which is around 15 mins away.
  2. You can directly hail a private cab from Guwahati Airport or Guwahati Railway station to IIM Shillong. This option is suitable for those who are traveling to the college for the first time. The fair amounts to something around 2k and can be shared by people accompanying you.

Once you are familiar with the traffic and routes, you can look for other options as well.
