What is the formula for converting CGPA to percentage in NIT Rourkela?
Earlier, a circular was issued by NIT Rourkela regarding the rule for conversion stating that the institute does not have any rule. However, as per the new rules issued in 2021, The formula for converting CGPA to percentage in NIT Rourkela is percentage = cgpa*10
For instance, if someone has a CGPA of 9.5, then the percentage will be 95%.
Please note that this formula may not be applicable to other institutions and is specific to NIT Rourkela. Additionally, it is important to check with the institution for any updates or changes to their policies regarding the calculation of percentages from CGPA.
What is the best place in NIT Rourkela?
Your favorite spot at NIT Rourkela will depend upon your interests and personality-
- People who are into sports love to spend their time in DTS or STS. They love and cherish the floodlight lit moments over there. Gym people love to spend their time in the gym.
- Then there are people who devote all their energy and time into the various clubs at NIT R. Some of these clubs are- MM, Cyborg, FSAE, SAE, Aasra, Synergy, Mavericks, etc.
- The ‘politicians’ of NIT R can always be found in the SAC. These people derive happiness from organizing the NIT R fests and various other events on campus.
- Backpost is the favorite spot of every guy at NIT Rourkela. The food and the lonely walks on the long desolate Backpost road are the best. You can enjoy Manchurian, samosa chaat, and aloo paratha at this spot.
- Couples like to spend their time together in front of CVR/KMS, in the dark lanes of faculty quarters, at the swimming pool after gym hours, on the dark stairs of DTS, or on the rooftop of the BMBT/ Chemical building. I won’t include MN International, because it is outside the NIT Rourkela campus.
Whichever spot you choose among these, the time that you spend with your friends at NIT Rourkela will be the most memorable and these are going to be the best years of your life.

Yes, NIT Rourkela has a branch-changing policy, but branch change is possible only if
- You should have CGPA higher than 8.5
- One among the top 5% of students who opt for a branch change
- Finally, admission to the other branch is limited based on the seats available in the particular branch
Should I take Biotech in NIT Rourkela?
One of my friends was interested in this field and decided to take Biotech at NIT Rourkela. She claims it to be the best decision of her life. The program was more inclined toward biomed than biotech. Here are a few highlights of the course
- The program is delivered by some well-experienced and qualified faculty. They are beneficial and adopt modern pedagogy to ensure a better understanding of concepts.
- NIT Rourkela has a great culture, reputation, and alumni network.
- Most alumni of the Biotechnology branch of NIT Rourkela are pursuing careers abroad while a few have opted for CS careers.
Overall, Biotechnology is a multifaceted branch that has a great research scope outside India. However, The Indian market has yet to increase its demand for bioengineers. It’s advisable to choose the right sub-field and have the right skill set.

How is NIT Rourkela for mechanical engineering?
Mechanical Engineering is one of the best branches of NIT Rourkela in terms of placement opportunities and exposure. Here are some of the pros of choosing the branch.
- Faculties of the branch are great. Professors are cooperative and student-friendly.
- It has a good infrastructure. The atmosphere on campus is ideal for studies.
- The mechanical branch has a few clubs. Make sure you join one of the clubs according to your interest.
- The institute provides adequate support to students who want to join various competitions.
- If you want to try out any design, you can ask any faculty. You will get the required helps.
- During tech fests, participate in paper presentations and other activities, you will get to learn a lot.
- Seniors of this branch are quite helpful.
Which one is better: NIT Rourkela or NIT Warangal?
According to the reviews online, NIT Warangal is much better than NIT Rourkela. It is among the top 3 NITs in India. Warangal has the best CSE and ECE departments. They have a 100% placement record.
NIT Rourkela is also good but not in the same league as Warangal. NIT Rourkela has increased in popularity in recent years and is currently in the league of NIT Allahabad, Jaipur or Calicut. Its main disadvantage is its location and extremely strict attendance rules. But the infrastructure of NIT Rourkela is getting better each day. Due to its location some of the top recruiters do not prefer visiting the college.
The most important thing that makes NIT Warangal better than Rourkela is its moderate course fees and the brilliant placement record.

How are the placement of electrical engineering in NIT Rourkela?
NIT Rourkela's average package of Electrical Engineering 2023 was recorded at INR 14.55 LPA. Moreover, the quality and number of recruiters are also great given the fact that it's one of the top NITs. However, core jobs are only a handful and not at par with IT jobs. Usually, the toppers of the electrical engineering branch secure jobs in the limited core companies that visit for placements.
NIT Rourkela Electrical Engineering is the perfect choice for those looking for a government job preferably in PSUs. PSUs give a lot of preference to Electrical Engineers especially from NIT Rourkela since most of their work involves the core engineering branches.
I asked a friend in NIT Rourkela regarding the current placement scenario of the EE branch. As per the information he shared, almost 92% of the student got placed in 2022. My brother scored a 9+ CGPA in most of his semesters during his B.Tech CSE at NIT Rourkela. He even ended up with a 9+ CGPA as his final B.Tech grade. Here are a few tips to help you achieve this high in your exams-
- Work hard throughout the semesters. It is very rare that someone gets a 9+ CGPA at NIT Rourkela by studying the night before an exam.
- Be attentive in the class and take your assignments seriously.
- Even if you copy your assignments sometimes, make sure to understand those answers afterwards.
- Writing things down is the best way to remember them.
- The TA that you get for 20 marks actually decides your grades. Performing well in that TA will allow you to score a 9+ CGPA in your semesters.
- Keep a track of your midterm marks. Calculate the worst case estimate of your semester grades beforehand.
- Remember to polish your strengths before working on your weaknesses.
- Persistence and dedication is the key.

How is the placement for an M.Tech in NIT, Rourkela (all branches)?
Many companies visit the CSE branch every year with a decent salary package. Only a limited number of core companies approach students from the EE and EC branches. The placement support at BM and BT is relatively poor at NIT Rourkela.

Is branch change easy if I want CSE at NIT Rourkela?
NIT Rourkela started branch change facility from academic year 2017-2018. For a branch change, your first year CGPA and seat availability in the desired course will be considered. However, to answer you precisely, it is not easy to get a branch change, that too into CSE. Top scorers at NIT Rourkela are able to achieve this feat.
The main obstacle is that students acquire a laid back attitude after getting an admission into an NIT or IIT. Even if you work 1/10th as hard as you did during your JEE preparation, you will get a good CGPA and your chances for a branch change will be high. For this, you will have to work hard instead of blaming the faculty, syllabus or hectic schedule.
It is quite difficult to upgrade to CSE at NIT Rourkela. However, if you work really hard and get lucky enough that the department has vacant seats, you might get into CSE after your first year.
