Is it worth pursuing an MBA from IIM Trichy? I am a business consultant making 6LPA now, so worried about the financial results from Tier 2 IIM.
Joining an IIM solely to get placed at a high-paying job is not the right perspective. A working professional should pursue an MBA to enhance his skills and acquire extra knowledge. You should be looking for the following in an MBA
- The new skills you will acquire
- Understanding of the new tactics of Businesses
- Learning the art of discipline and other work ethics
- Bonding with people from diverse cultures and hierarchies.
- Conducting case studies and broadening your problem solving skills.
Only if you value these aspects can IIM Trichy benefit you in any way. But if you focus just on ROI, it’s high time you target IIM A B and C only.
Which would be the best choice among IIFT Kolkata, IIM Trichy and other new IIMs for someone with strong interests to pursue a career in finance?
IIM Trichy is an ideal choice for pursuing a career in Finance. Many reputed banks visit the campus for recruitment like Citi, ICICI Bank, and YES Bank. This year the Finance sector accounted for 15%of the total placements. The highest CTC stood at INR 20 LPA whereas the average CTC stood at INR 17.67 LPA.
The IIFT program of Kolkata may have an upper hand due to its location but it’s not at par with IIM Trichy. If you are interested in the program I suggest you go for the New Delhi one.
The new IIMs are somewhat similar to Trichy but they won’t help you kickstart a career directly in finance. You might have to take baby steps to enter the Finance sector. So it’s best if you choose IIM Trichy only.
Which one is better in IIM Trichy or MDI IM course?
Earlier there was a major difference in the placement scenario of both the courses and institutes. For the IM course, one had to study at a foreign business school, with which MDI has a tie-up during the second year, and manage your internship on your own. Moreover, they let you sit for the final placements only.
On the other hand, at IIM you can avail of the summer placements, and PPO and then even sit for final placements.
Fortunately now, the PGPIM is a 2-year residential course at MDI Gurgaon campus only, with summer and final placements happening along with the PGP students. Through this, it has overcome its shortcomings of average final placements and is a much better option than IIM Trichy.

What is the course fee for the PGPBM course at IIM Trichy?
The total fee for the PGPBM program comprises two parts:
- Non-refundable Course Fee – Rs. 11,80,000/- plus applicable taxes
- Refundable Caution Deposit - Rs. 10,000/-
The non-refundable course fee includes
- Tuition
- Library
- Case Permission Royalty
- Textbooks
- Academic Course Pack
- Examination
- Alumni activity
The fee is for the total course and is not related to the number of terms. However, for ease of payment, the course fee is structured to be paid in eight installments, the first one amounting to Rs. 2,10, 000/- and Installments II to VIII amounting to Rs. 1,40, 000/- due every three months. The date of payment of the fee installments will be announced by the PGPBM Office.
If IIM KI is 8/10 (ABC being 10/10) where does IIM Shillong and IIM Trichy stand?
Here are my ratings for the IIMs
- IIM Ahmedabad Bangalore Calcutta: 10
- IIM Lucknow: 9
- IIM Kozhikode and Indore: 7.9
- Other second-generation IIMs: 7.6
- New third generation IIMs: 6.8
The above rankings have been done on the basis of age, placements, and research. I don’t think these factors are enough to rank IIMs.
Another major parameter of comparison is the duration of the establishment.
- First generation: (est before 1984) Ahmedabad Bangalore Calcutta Lucknow
- Second generation: (est. before 2000) Indore and Kozhikode
- Third generation: (est. around 2009) - Ranchi, Raipur, Rohtak, Trichy, Udaipur, Kashipur, Shillong
- Fourth Generation: New IIMs (after 2014) - 7 IIMs
Most of the FT rankings and online rankings are based on this parameter. In reality, every IIM has top-notch faculty, infrastructure and placements m. Yet the new IIMs will take some time to reach the top.
How is the life after IIM Trichy?
After the completion of my MBA from IIM Trichy, I realized that the placements were decent and in accordance with the IIM standards. Most students got expected or more than expected-CTCs. The students who were unable to get placed in a desirable firm opted for off-campus placements and they too landed better jobs. Most of the students were able to start their careers within a month after graduation.
All in all, after 2 hectic years full of classes and exams, it’s kind of relaxing to sit and wait for placements.
Should I go for IIM Trichy or try again next year for a better IIM?
The answer to this question depends directly on you and your profile.
You should forgo your offer at IIM Trichy if
- You have above average past academic background
- If you are confident that you can work harder and score better in CAT
- If you are a fresher and want to gain experience before joining
You should go for Trichy if
- Your past academic performance is below average
- You are not motivated enough or confident in scoring better in the CAT
I hope I made it easy for you to make a wise decision. Just remember that IIM Trichy is one of the best among the new IIMs so joining it won’t be futile.
How good is IIM Trichy HR? What's the placement status?
The IIM Trichy HR program is a relatively new program that started in 2020. Owing to its lack of credibility not many go for this course.

From the table we can infer that the highest CTC of the HR program is nearly half of that of the regular program. This clearly speaks about its placement opportunities. So I will suggest you go for HR only if you are really interested in it, else go for a regular PGPM.
Which college is better to go, IIM Trichy or SIBM Pune?
SIBM Pune is one of the best B Schools in India. It boasts of an early establishment and has been growing ever since then. Its success can be determined by the large number of business leaders it has given birth to, that have attained executive positions across the world.

Infrastructure: Situated on the picturesque hilltop of Lavale, SIBM Pune is a heaven for sports enthusiasts. Student-Driven Culture: SIBM Pune has a prominent student-driven culture. Everything ranging from placements, and admissions, along with corporate and alumni relations are entirely managed by students. This culture has become a part of the learning culture of the institute and also its USP.
Rankings: According to most rankings SIBM Pune is better than IIM Trichy.
So I will suggest you look at the bigger picture and don’t just get tempted by the IIM tag.
