Which IIM is better: IIM Shillong, IIM Udaipur, or IIM Trichy?

KS
Kishley Sharma Posted On : January 16th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Management Shillong

I don’t see why people keep comparing the older IIMs to newer ones. No matter how good a new IIM is doing, it can never compare to an older established IIM. The same is the case here. IIM Trichy and IIM Udaipur are indeed growing at an excellent rate, but IIM Shillong still is the winner of the race. This is because of its early establishment and being a member of the top IIMs family BLACKIS. That in itself is an accomplishment that the new IIMs have failed to achieve.

IIM Shillong is the 7th IIM and is among the top B Schools in India. Ever since its establishment, it has been growing at a tremendous pace and its placements are a testament to that. The brand value it enjoys because of being a part of BLACKIS is much more than any new IIM. This brand value helps you in the long run.

How much should I want to score in CAT to enroll into an IIM, especially in IIM Trichy, as I am from Tamilnadu? Is there any preference for female candidates?

PP
Priyank Pawar Posted On : January 13th, 2023
Product Manager at Paytm (company) (2018–present)

The CAT cutoff for this year at IIM Trichy for the General Category is

Quantitative Aptitude

70

Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning

70

Verbal & Reading Comprehension

70

Total (Overall Percentile)

92

For female candidates, an extra 1% will be awarded in calculating your final total score for admission.

Despite the cutoff, a certain percentile cannot guarantee your admission. This is because the CAT score is a major but not the only parameter which constitutes the admission criteria. Other factors include the Personal Interview, Work Experience, Gender Diversity, and past academic records. Moreover, your rank also depends on the collective performance of your entire batch.

Can a BCom fresher with finance specialisation get a good placement at b-schools like IIFT, IIM Trichy, and other new IIMs?

Since you are only concerned about placements, let me tell you that placement depends not on one but many factors. Some work experience, educational background, presence of mind, knowledge, and obviously luck. Based on your profile the pros and cons you will experience are as follows

Pros

  • You are already well-versed with the basics of the program which makes it easier to catch up initially.
  • Some companies, mainly Sales, Marketing, and Finance, prefer freshers over work experience.
  • You might have already figured out your interests because you are familiar with the program.

Cons

  • Some companies, mainly in the operations and consulting sector, prefer people with work experience only.
  • A little diversity won’t hurt

Lastly, since you are a fresher, before you join a B School, gather knowledge through books or certifications.

Is joining new IIMs (Ranchi, Trichy, Udaipur) worth it? How will be the career growth after an MBA from new ones?

AB
Arvind Balakrishnan Posted On : January 13th, 2023
99.22 CAT'16, PGPM at MDI Gurgaon

The career growth offered by the new IIMs is difficult to analyze as they haven’t been established for long. One cannot infer their worth easily as its alumni are yet to establish themselves in the corporate world. It will take a few more years to determine the growth of CEO alums career-wise.

If you are concerned about the general job prospects, try going through the placement reports of these IIMs. You will get a general idea of the packages and roles offered.

To know if the new IIMs are worth going for, you need to check what you are expecting from these B Schools. If you are looking for basic learning and a small push to kickstart your career, the new IIMs will benefit you. But if you are on the lookout for high ROI, the new IIMs may or may not satisfy your expectations.

Which MBA college should I prefer (background is from B.tech hons (CS) and have 15 months work experience), IIT KGP or IIM Trichy?

JD
Jaideep Kumar Dutta Posted On : January 13th, 2023

The best way to answer your query is to mention the core highlights of MBA from both institutes.

IIT

  • The MBA course here is more of technical nature as the program is one of the many departments of a huge Technical institute
  • The peers are very talented and genius
  • The small batch size increases the opportunities for placements

IIM Trichy

  • The MBA experience here is much more diverse and challenging. You will find peers from diverse backgrounds.
  • The pedagogy here is top notch as they specialize in this area
  • IIM Trichy has a better academic rigor and their style of Management education is too good
  • IIMs offer better food and infrastructural facilities

I will sum up my answer with 2 points. If you are looking for job prospects outside India, IITs are a good choice. But within India, IIMs are a better option as their style of Management surpasses that of IITs.

Which institute be selected for admission IIFT Delhi campus, IIM Trichy, IIM Udaipur, IIM Ranchi, MDI international Management?

SR
Shivam Raj Posted On : January 13th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (Graduated 2020)

If you are looking just for a brand name and high ROI, then your options are

  • IIM Udaipur
  • IIM Trichy
  • IIM Ranchi

If you are looking for legacy, established alumni, and faculty with decades of experience within the same institute, your options are

  • IIFT Delhi campus
  • MDI

Now let me further elaborate on the last 2 colleges.

IIFT: This institute is a good option for people who wish to get into International business. I can any day prefer IIFT over the new IIMs.

MDI: MDI specializes in Marketing so anyone interested in this sector can go for MDI.

So it eventually depends on you and the specialization you want.

Indian Institutes of Management: Is it worth to join IIM Trichy after graduating from IIT Madras?

AR
Aishwarya Rao Posted On : January 13th, 2023
PGP 2016-18 | IIM Tiruchirappalli | Former IT employee

I still don’t understand why people have to choose between colleges. Rather than the institute, what matters is what you learn from the college. Many people from IITs regret not choosing a different field while many are content with their decision. It all comes down to what you like and want to pursue. Coming back to your question, I am going to answer it very objectively. IIT Madras is a good choice from the learning perspective whereas IIM is a good choice from ROI perspective. You are smart enough to gauge the situation. If it’s the money you are after IIM is for you but if it’s the knowledge you are seeking, IIT it is.

How would you rank and choose among IIM Trichy, Raipur, Ranchi and Kashipur?

MM
Madhura Mukhopadhyay Posted On : January 13th, 2023
MBA from Indian Institute of Management Shillong (Expected 2023)

The distinctions between Ranchi and Trichy are razor thin. Both second-generation IIMs are performing admirably in their respective leagues. Here is a comparison of Ranchi and Trichy based on various parameters. Raipur and Kashipur lag far behind these two IIMs.

Parameters:

  • Placements: Ranchi and Trichy have remarkably similar placements. Ranchi's average package is 16.62 LPA, while Trichy's average package is 17.01 LPA.
  • Campus: Trichy, hands down, for campus life. Trichy has a modern 175-acre campus with all amenities. In 2021, the institute began moving to a permanent campus on a 60-acre plot in Dhurwa.
  • Locational Advantage: Both have a geographical advantage. Ranchi is near XLRI, Jsr. Trichy is conveniently located between Bangalore and Chennai. Trichy is also home to NIT Trichy, the best NIT in the country.
  • Perception: Trichy's perception is rapidly expanding. It is fairly obvious from all B-school rankings. So, with the exception of marketing, you can choose IIM Trichy over IIM Ranchi for any specialization. Ranchi's marketing is effective.

Therefore, taking everything into account, the final ranking will be Trichy>Ranchi>>Raipur>>Kashipur.

Which new IIM amongst Ranchi(R), Trichy(T) and Udaipur(U) is the best?

HV
Harsha Vardhan Posted On : January 13th, 2023
PGP from Indian Institute of Management, Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, India (2018)

Without a second thought, I will say IIM Trichy is the best among these IIMs. To elaborate on my opinion, let’s compare the 3 IIMs on the bases of the following factors

Location: Both Udaipur and Ranchi face a considerable location advantage because of which they have been suffering. Trichy on the other hand enjoys a location advantage owing to its close proximity to Bangalore and Chennai. It lies in the belt of industries.

Infrastructure: The infrastructure of IIM Ranchi is also one of its drawbacks. The classrooms are boring with no case discussion at all. The living conditions here are also scary. IIM Trichy and Udaipur both have excellent infrastructural faculties. IIM Trichy has its own campus which differentiates it from other baby IIMs.

Faculty: The faculty at IIM Ranchi is substandard with very less caliber. They don’t let students question or discuss their teachings. The faculty at Udaipur is better than Ranchi yet, they have started leaving gradually for better IIMs. IIM Trichy on the other hand boasts of a well-learned and experienced faculty.

Placements: The placement scenarios at Ranchi and Udaipur are both very average. While Ranchi complains of inflation, Udaipur only faces serious problems of low package offers. Whereas the placement figures at IIM Trichy are excellent owing to its connectivity.

So the final order is - IIM Trichy>IIM Udaipur>IIM Ranchi

Can I get into IIM Trichy with a CGPA between 6.5-7.00?

KK
Koteshwar Kolluri Posted On : January 13th, 2023
studied PGDM Marketing at Indian Institute of Management, Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, India (2017)

Past academics are one of the many criteria for admission to IIM Trichy. It has a certain weightage but not more than a CAT score. So if you think you have a low CGPA, you should target a very high CAT percentile, something above 98. You can also prepare well for the interviews beforehand to compensate for your low undergraduate scores. One important thing to keep in mind is when asked during the interview the reason behind your low scores, you should have a viable and reasonable answer. Then they might overlook your UG scores and focus on other parameters instead
