Do students from IIM/FMS/JBIMS/SPJIMR/IIFT/XLRI bunk classes like engineering students?
At IIM/FMS/JBIMS/SPJIMR/IIFT/XLRI, attendance is seen as a crucial aspect of the learning experience. Every effort must be made to be present in class and to participate actively in the discussions. In fact, class participation is considered to be such an important factor in determining grades that a significant portion of the total course weightage is allocated to it. This system is in place to encourage students to be engaged in the learning process and to ensure that they are taking full advantage of the educational opportunities available to them.
On the other hand, at IIT Kanpur, there is a more relaxed approach to attendance. While it is still advisable to attend classes and to be present for lectures, there is no strict requirement in place. This gives students more flexibility and allows them to choose when they want to attend classes based on their personal schedules or other commitments. It also means that engineering students are not penalized if they miss a class or two, as long as they are able to make up for it by participating in other ways, such as completing assignments or preparing for exams.

Who is the best professor at IIM Ahmedabad?
I have a few friends who graduated from IIM Ahmedabad. Most of them used to gush about the teaching methodology of Professor Saral Banerjee. He is an expert in Operations Management. But his skills and knowledge aren’t limited to a single discipline. You will scarcely come across a better definition of strategy than the one proposed by him, “Strategy is all about closing doors.” His way of explaining the facts of management through the Elephant, Cheetah, and Tortoise story makes a lifelong impression.
What was your daily schedule while at IIM Ahmedabad?
Life at IIM Ahmedabad is much more than academics.
- A typical day on the campus starts around 8:15 am for most students. They usually grab something to eat on their way to class. The lectures start at 8:45 am sharp. If you are late, you won’t be able the attend your lecture that day.
- Lectures go on till 1:10 pm. Students spend around 45 minutes wondering whether they have a surprise quiz that day or not. The notification regarding the surprise quiz comes around 1:45 pm from the academic office. Students who get quizzes start last min prep. Others enjoy their lunch. Quiz usually goes on till 3:15 pm.
- During afternoon, some take a nap, some students engage in club activities or sports.
- After dinner, students do their assignments, group projects, class preparation for the next day. This usually takes up until 2 am, even some more time on certain days.
This is how the cycle repeats.
How is SPJIMR's placement report better than IIMs including IIM Calcutta and as good as IIM Ahmedabad (both Average and Median)?
Here are a few possible reasons why SPJIMR placements are better than or equally good as IIMs
- SPJIMR has a much smaller batch size in comparison to IIMs and thus the average rises.
- SPJIMR has a very rigorous selection process that filters the best students and the recruiters are well aware of this.
- SPJIMR enjoys a great location maximizing the exposure and opportunities rendered to the students.
- The students perform exceptionally well in the placement interviews and thus secure high packages.
It's important to note that these reasons are just based on speculations and it cannot be exactly determined why some placements are better than others.
Is there a possibility to not receive a call from IIM A/B/C, even after scoring 100 percentile in CAT?
Yes, there is a chance that you may not receive a call from IIM even after scoring 100 percentile in CAT. However, this happens only for IIM Bangalore.
You will receive a call from IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Calcutta because they choose the top 50 percentilers. But IIM Bangalore has an unknown logarithm for the admission process. I think it focuses too much on academics.
Which has a better campus: the IIM Ahmedabad or the IIT Bombay?
It is a no-brainer that IIM Ahmedabad is considered one of the finest institutes in terms of infrastructure in the whole of India. In fact, its campus excellency is what made it the shoot location of the Bollywood movie 2 States. It stands better even when compared to one of the best technological institutes IIT Bombay. The main areas where it gives an edge to IIT Bombay are its hostel facilities and supporting infrastructure. For instance
- Every 8 students have 3 bathroom facilities
- Students get single occupancy rooms
- Every room has a small balcony, a big study table, and built-in bookshelves
- Every hostel has 40 rooms with 3-4 washing machines and few refrigerators.
- Free 24/7 Wi-Fi facilities within campus
The overall ambiance of the hostels installs a sense of comfort and productivity among the students.
IIT Bombay campus also has several aspects where it gives an edge to IIM Ahmedabad. For instance
- Its campus is considered much more beautiful and green
- It has top-notch amenities and recreational facilities
- It is even considered bigger in size than IIM Ahmedabad
- It has 2 natural lakes and a number of cliffs within the campus.
All this makes the IIT Bombay campus one of the best in the country. We can conclude that both campuses are excellent in their own parameters. While IIT Ahmedabad offers the best hostel facilities, IIT Bombay has the best campus ambiance.
I have scored above 90 in class 10th but I got 79.5 % in class 12th. My college record is decent. Do I stand a good chance at IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore or IIM Calcutta?
If your CAT score is above 99.90 percentile, you will have a decent chance of getting an interview call from IIM Calcutta.
IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Bangalore assign good weight to past academic records for the interview shortlist. You need to have a consistently good record throughout your 10th, 12th, and graduation to get a call from IIMA and B. Having relevant work experience of a minimum of 2 years is also important if you are targeting IIMB.
What is the safe score for IIM A?
By safe score, I assume you are enquiring about the IIM Ahmedabad minimum cutoff.
Admission to the top MBA colleges in India including IIMs requires a minimum CAT cutoff of 90 percentile. Tier-1 IIMs such as IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta, IIM Lucknow, and IIM Kozhikode have a high cutoff around 99+ whereas Tier 2 IIMs requires CAT cut off around 70-80 percentile.
CAT cut-off 2022 for admission to the IIMs is in the range between 95-100 percentile for all categories. For General category students, the CAT 2022 cut-off percentile for top IIMs is around 98-100 percentile and the cutoff is lower in the case of Reserved Category and baby IIMs.
Specifically speaking of IIM Ahmedabad, the overall qualifying CAT cut-off is
- General Category: 80 percentile
- NC-ONC and Transgender Categories: 75 percentile
- SC and PwD: 70 percentile
- ST: 60 percentile

Why is IIM Ahmedabad not as good as Harvard, Stanford or Wharton?
Harvard, Stanford, and Wharton are way older than IIM Ahmedabad. These B-Schools offers better academic structure, faculty, alumni base, and infrastructure. Also, students need at least 3 years or more of work experience to attend Harvard, Stanford, or Wharton. IIM Ahmedabad doesn’t have any such prerequisites.
- These B-Schools offer more practical-oriented management education. An entrepreneurship class at HBS requires students to form a group, create a start-up model, pitch their ideas to guest investors, get funding and get it running before the semester ends. It helps students prepare better for the professional journey ahead.
- HBS and Stanford have Nobel laureates, heads of international institutes, authors of international bestsellers, and directors of top consulting firms as a part of their faculty pool.
- A typical bath profile of HBS will have people from every walks of life. You will share your lectures with investment bankers, military veterans, and professors. The peer learning scope is huge.
- Stanford and Harvard have huge alumni bases. As a student of these institutes, you will get to network with them and find good career opportunities.
These are a few of the many reasons that put Harvard, Stanford, and Wharton well ahead of IIM Ahmedabad.
Which company paid 72 lakhs (highest domestic package this year) to a fresher at IIM Ahmedabad?
I will refrain from mentioning the name of the company as it has not been published and doing so would be a breach of their private policy.
However, if we go through the placement reports of IIM Ahmedabad, a company offered the highest CTC of 72 LPA. This company belongs to the online service sector.
This role is available only to professionals with relevant work experience and not freshers.
