What should I choose: MBA (EPGP) from IIM Bangalore or MBA (full-time) from Mannheim Business School, Germany? I have 8 years of experience in IT/Telecom and want to get into Product Management.

Rather than telling you what to choose, I will list down the pros and cons of both the B Schools and leave it to you to make the final decision.

Mannheim Business School, Germany

Pros

  • Being one of the most reputed B Schools in Germany, you will get a high-paying job right after completing your course.
  • Mannheim itself is an experience as people from all over the world come here and you get to attend some amazing events too.

Cons

  • This B School charges a whopping fee of around 32000-35000 euros. And the fees do not include living expenses (9000 euros)
  • You will have to learn German especially if you want to get into product management to deal with clients. That is an additional expense.

IIM Bangalore

Pros

  • Fees are comparatively less than that of Mannheim Business School.
  • Faculty is supportive and extremely experienced.
  • Living expenses are included in the fees themselves.
  • The placements are top notch and with an above-average grade, you can easily get placed at a reputed firm with a high package.

Cons

  • Being located in the heart of the city the only disadvantage that IIM Bangalore students face is the heavy traffic.

Weighing both the pros and cons you can now make a decision easily. In my opinion, go for the German B School if you have plans for permanently settling abroad. But if you want to eventually stay in your home country then IIM Bangalore is the best option for you.

What is the process and eligibility of getting enrolled in an executive MBA from IIM Calcutta?

RS
Ranjit Singh Posted On : December 12th, 2022
P.G.D.M in Design & Marketing, Delhi Univ

IIM Calcutta is among the top B Schools in the customized executive education category globally. It offers 2 executive programs - PGP-Ex or Post Graduate Programs for Executive, and

PGP-Ex-VLM or PGP-Ex for Visionary Leadership in Manufacturing.

Factors considered in the selection process include:

  • Academic record

  • Work Experience

  • Performance in aptitude tests

  • Personal interview

Now let’s have a glimpse of both courses individually.

PGPEX:

  • 1-year full-time program

  • It is for Industry Executives who have worked for more than five years in the industry.

  • The program helps people stuck in the middle of their careers to upgrade their management skills and climb the ladder to top management roles.

  • You require a Bachelor's degree to join the program.

PGPEX-VLM:

  • 1-year full time program

  • It focuses on the manufacturing industry

  • Co-run by IIM Calcutta, IIT Kanpur, and IIT Madras

  • You require an engineering degree and a minimum of four and a half-year of work experience in manufacturing, engineering, and related sectors.

Both programs are equally good. The only difference lies in the fact that the latter focuses on manufacturing and technical aspects more than the former.

What are the placement prospects for one pursuing PGP from IIM Bangalore with 7 years of work experience in PSU?

DS

IIM Bangalore is supposedly the best school for people with prior work experience. In comparison to other IIMs in India, this is completely true. The lateral placements in IIMB deserve credit. There is, however, a stipulation regarding the number of years of work experience. If someone has 2-3.5 years of work experience, it is an ideal place for him because he will be allowed in almost all companies in both laterals and finals. Everyone is welcome to compete in the finals. In general, the following three things occur:

  • Candidates with 0-2 years of work experience are good for finals but have few chances in laterals. Preferred in marketing, finance, and top consulting positions (for the brightest).
  • Candidates with (2-3.5) years of professional experience are excellent for laterals and finals. Preferred in all situations, including consulting.
  • Candidates with (3.5-4.5) years of work experience: Good for laterals, with an average chance of making it to the finals (but good for average consulting roles and relevant experience)
  • Candidates with 4.5+ years of work experience have a poor chance of making it to the finals, except for relevant experience and some consulting roles, and a mixed chance of making it to the laterals ( some might end up getting good, for some, it might be average)

It is determined by the candidate's profile, achievements, type of work experience, GPA (DML list), networking, communication skills, the nature and demand of the recruiting company, the job market, availability, and so on.

Prospects for 7 years of work-ex are now available. With that, you should be prepared to explain its alignment with your career goals during the shortlisting process. Some startups do offer opportunities to talented students with extensive work experience. Getting on the DML list increases your chances of success everywhere. You should have place com people on your side. If you believe that these things are difficult for you, try taking sabbaticals/study leaves (if you work in a PSU) and evaluating later. You will almost certainly be assigned here. The placement's quality cannot be guaranteed.

How is IIM Kozhikode for an Executive MBA for someone with 10 years of work experience? Is the time duration and investment worth it?

MS
Mahak Sengupta Posted On : May 20th, 2023
PDGM from Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (2016)

If the job opportunity offered at the end of an Executive MBA from IIM Kozhikode is less than what you are already earning, it’s not logical to invest 20 Lakhs and gain nothing in return. However, irrespective of your current package, an Executive MBA is a unique qualification and will help you for further growth.

There are many institutes that offer Executive MBA at lesser fees than IIMs. Listed below are some of the top institutes offering Executive MBA courses in the country along with the fees charged by them

Symbiosis Center for Management and HRD

INR 2,10,000

Symbiosis Institute of Business Management

INR 2,60,000

Amity University

INR 6,20,000

Indian Institute of Business Management and Studies

INR 40,800

FMS

INR 95,000

Delhi Technological University

INR 2,30,000

A few institutes even offer triple accredited Executive MBA which is the most valued. Ultimately, you should not focus on the institute but on what it offers.

Shall I go for PGDBM from NMIMS, or shall I go for PGCBM from XLRI, Jamshedpur? Please feel free to advice any other course, apart from these two related to EMBA. I have 5 plus years of experience.

XLRI has a strong reputation for Human Resource (HR) management and Industrial Relations (IR) studies. If an individual is specifically interested in HR/IR, then XLRI would be a better option compared to NMIMS (Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies). However, if you are looking for a general management program, then NMIMS would be a better choice because of its excellent peer group and rigorous curriculum.

XLRI is still a good institute for other streams, but it is more specialized in HR and IR. Similarly, NMIMS is known for its general management program, and it may not have the same level of expertise as XLRI in HR/IR.

Why it is continuously hard for IIM A, B, C, XLRI to compete with ISB in executive program in spite of it being just 15 years old?

RC
Rashika Chowdhary Posted On : June 2nd, 2021
studied at IESE Business School (2018)

One of my friends at ISB claims that the main reason for ISB Hyderabad to hold the top position in the executive program over the years. It is its core competency rather than just competing with institutes like IIMs and XLRI, who lead in the 2-year MBA and PGDM programs.

The points below provide a brief overview of the success story of ISB Hyderabad.

  • ISB Hyderabad has been developing with a work experience of above two years at least.
  • Due to the shorter time span of the executive program, it is more popular and in demand.
  • In the traditional MBA program, the curriculum is an extension to the undergraduate program, emphasizing mostly classroom learning.
  • ISB Hyderabad has somewhat established a cheaper alternative to the so-called American MBA system.
  • There are collaborations with companies like Kellogg’s, which helped in fulfilling the demand for a world-class MBA degree.
  • They have a lot of contribution in its breaking into the Indian executive MBA program market.
  • It has resulted in a program that is half-priced as the American MBA programs.
  • The program in ISB is just 11 months, as opposed to the 24 months MBA program from other institutes.
  • For fresh graduates, IIMs are always the first priority, which offers a standard 2-years MBA degree. The core competency of IIMs is to train the less experienced students. But, in the last few years, IIMs are getting into the executive programs in MBA, but those are treated under the non-core segment.

Although ISB charges twice as much as IIMs at present times, it has been the first choice for working professionals for the reasons stated above. The core competency of ISB discussed above makes it the clear winner in executive education, which the IIMs and XLRI cannot defeat.

Is Talentedge a good way to take up certificate courses equivalent to an executive MBA from IIM Raipur and XLRI?

SM
Saksham Malhotra Posted On : February 7th, 2023
Design Research Intern at Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IITB) (2018–present)

The Talentedge platform, created by some of the finest institutions in the country, is an excellent resource for gaining knowledge in the real world through online courses for working executives. To the best of my knowledge, there are both short-term and long-term courses meticulously designed for the executive level in various domains of business acumen.

However, from my observations, most of the programs are from interdisciplinary domains and focus on current business evolutions in order to keep up with the rapidly changing world.

If you are interested in pursuing online certification courses in management and business domains, it would be highly recommended to consider two important platforms: Edx, particularly IIMBx which offers a very synergistic, creative, and practical approach to real-world insights, and SIBM Pune Online Courses. Both of these platforms have a reputation for providing high-quality education and are well-suited for working professionals looking to advance their careers.

Having a 3.5 year experience in EPC Project Management, should one join IIM Nagpur/Vizag or should wait for a year, and go for an Executive MBA?

BA
Boga Akhil Posted On : January 17th, 2023
MBA from Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (Graduated 2019)

Before dwelling on the details and explanations, let me give you a simple answer.

  • You should go for a 2-year MBA program if you are open to switching domains in the future. One of my friends was in a similar situation with around 4 years of experience in EPC Project Management. After great anticipation, she decided to go for IIM. Visakhapatnam which is a relatively new IIM. But it happened to be one of the best decisions of her life. She realized her inclination toward Finance and ended up with a role in the financial planning department of her company. She says that the MBA program changed her perspective and broadened her career spectrum which would not have been possible if she had taken an Executive program.
  • You can go for the Executive program if you want to upscale your career prospects in the same field. Or you want a certificate that can get you a better job at a better company. This is a viable option if you are not open to switching domains and want to stick with your current field.

Now that I have talked about both scenarios let’s clear some misconceptions about the new IIMs. Frankly, they are not yet anywhere near the older IIMs but that does not change the fact that they have been developing at a speeding rate and are bound to do more so in the future. Through various interactions with the alumni, I have inferred that they were glad they joined the new IIM which provided world-class facilities and a breath of fresh air.
