What is the internet speed in IIT Guwahati?

AY
Aastha Yadav Posted On : April 30th, 2021
B.Tech in Biotechnology & Product Design, Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IITG) (2019)

Internet speed can clearly vary based on the number of users consuming the internet at that particular time.

  • If you are looking to download movies or shows, IIT-G offers DC and DC++ facilities which are like torrents for LAN. Internet speed on most days is above 11MBPS. Downloading speed may vary from 50 KBps to 50 MBps.
  • YouTube streaming is hassle-free at 1080p even at peak hours.
  • On working days you will have access to the internet from evening 5 PM to 2 AM and again from 5 AM to 8 AM. This is to ensure that students won't waste time in the hostel and miss out on classes.
  • On holidays and around exam days you will have 24 hours free access to the internet even at hostels. Torrents are strictly not allowed within the campus.

Internet service is available 24/7 in academic complexes, lecture halls, libraries and there are not many restrictions on that as such.

What is the future of IIIT Guwahati?

CV
Chirag Verma Posted On : April 29th, 2021
Studied at Indian Institute of Information Technology, Guwahati (2019)

As IIIT Guwahati is a newly established institute, it struggles for the first few years as most institutes do. However, over the period of time, there has been a significant improvement in terms of infrastructure, student body, and faculty.

  • A couple of years back, the new campus became ready with all the necessary facilities and good infrastructure. Also, gyms and sports courts were established while keeping the increase of student intake in mind.
  • The faculty at IIIT Guwahati is quite promising with OS, Network Security, AI being some of the best fields you can engage in.
  • You can benefit from the conductive scenario of research and technical atmosphere. To my friend’s knowledge, the entrepreneurial scene is also great with about 4 startups launched by the 2015 batch in different stages.

The placements are also improving with every passing year. The following table shows the overall placement statistics at IIIT Guwahati:

Placement Percentage

76%

Highest Salary

17 LPA

Average Salary

IIIT Guwahati clearly sees a bright future ahead as compared to other newly established IIITs. To reach the stature of the old and famous IIITs like Hyderabad, it will take the next 3-5 years. With adequate progress going on, IIIT Guwahati shall be one of the leading national institutes for sure!

Should I join mechanical at NIT Silchar or CSE at IIIT Guwahati?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : August 25th, 2023
lives in New Delhi

One of my friends was in a similar situation and with her rank she got NIT Silchar Mechanical. However, she changed her mind at the last moment when she heard of the poor placement scenario of NIT Silchar. Sbe enrolled for the special round and luckily made it to IIIT Guwahati. She took the risk of choosing a new institution only because its placement scenario seemed more promising and the curriculum was well-updated.

IIIT Guwahati also has an excellent research culture since the faculty comprises professors who are Ph.D. holders from renowned IITS. Students get the chance to work on projects under their excellent guidance. The resources are limited but their excellent course makes up for it. The courses in the 2nd semester are very interesting like data structures, calculus, differential equations, Computer architecture, etc

Unless you have a specific interest in Mechanical go for IIIT Guwahati.

Is IIIT Guwahati that good as it’s NIRF ranking 2020 is just close to NIT Surat and NIT Jalandhar?

B.Tech from Indian Institute of Information Technology, Guwahati

If we talk about IIIT Guwahati in recent terms collating it with different IITs/IIITs/NITs it is actually doing really well. IIIT-G is a better option for pursuing CS/IT and then NITs.

Rather than relying completely on NIRF ranking, you can also take a look at placements. Again, IIIT Guwahati is one of the most renowned institutes situated in the northeastern party of Assam. According to the NIRF ranking, IIITG ranks 66th overall and 4th amongst all the IIITs.

Further, if you see, IIITG gives you a lively atmosphere to study Information Technology. IIITG consists of two branches namely CSE and ECE and this, in turn, keeps the faculty to student ratio good. The faculty members here are really polite and the best you can come across. They teach in-depth and are always ready to help.

Highlights:

  • Student quality is good as you can see students from diverse backgrounds. All are really passionate about technology.
  • The research team of IIITG is touching new heights in the field.
  • The curriculum is strictly followed and the focus is mainly on core CSE and ECE subjects.
  • The students are introduced to Data Structure in 1st year itself along with computer organization. And in 2nd year AI is introduced.

Awards:

Student innovators and Educators category-

  • Livonian (Bannari Amman Institute of Technology, Tamil nadu) - 50,000
  • Smart Triage (Indian Institute of Information Technology) - 30,000
  • Action group on AI and Radiology (Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur) - 20,000

Which one should I prefer, PEC Chandigarh or IIIT Guwahati in terms of brand value, infrastructure, quality of education, etc?

MR
Meghdeepa Rao Posted On : May 6th, 2021
B.Tech Computer Science, Indian Institute of Information Technology, Guwahati (2019),

The IIIT Guwahati has been established quite recently. And the second batch of the college has backed an average package of 7 LPA. So, it can be imagined how the college is growing in terms of its placement percentages.

  • The coding culture of the college is also very good.
  • The college follows the curriculum of the one of top colleges i.e. IIIT Hyderabad.
  • It has got one of the best directors i.e. Dr. Gautam Barua who was the director of IIT Guwahati and Patna.

In terms of brand value, infrastructure, and quality of education the IIIT Guwahati is much better than PEC Chandigarh. PEC Chandigarh is not recommended by the students because of its environment. But do research more on the method of teaching and management of the college before getting into any college. Hope this answer clears up some of your doubts.

How much time will it take for IIIT Guwahati to be fully established (gym, playing ground, different clubs extra)? Are there any plans the institute have for these things?

IK
Ishita Khanna Posted On : April 29th, 2021
Bachelor of technology Computer Science Engineering, Indian Institute of Information Technology, Guwahati (2020)

A friend of mine is currently studying in the 2nd year at IIIT Guwahati and recently shifted to the new campus. However, the campus is still getting completed with minor changes remaining.

Here’s the current scenario at IIIT G according to him:

  • Gym: It is almost completed with basic types of equipment and benches. For the starting few semesters there were no machines and equipment. However, you can also join various gyms nearby the airport which is in close proximity to the college.
  • Playgrounds: You will see a lot of emphasis on sports and games, not only the outdoor but indoor like table tennis, carom, chess, etc. There are newly constructed basketball, tennis and badminton courts, football and cricket fields also.
  • Intercollege tournaments: You can actively participate in various sports/game tournaments and competitions held by clubs where you can compete against other colleges like IIT Guwahati, AEC, etc.
  • Clubs: You can choose among several clubs, some of them are Reading Club, Programming Club, Music Club, Quiz Club, Literary Club, Movie Club, Yoga, and fitness Club, Dance Club, Photography club, etc.

There are ample opportunities for extracurricular activities besides academics. Also, the recent increase of intake from 90 students to 230 students has led to a significant improvement in these fields. In the end, your interest and participation are what drives the campus.

What should I choose, IIIT Naya Raipur CSE, IIIT Lucknow IT, or IIIT Guwahati CSE?

VK
Vishal Kumar Posted On : April 17th, 2021
Studies at Indian Institute of Information Technology, Lucknow (2022)

In the given three colleges, IIIT Naya Raipur is the best. Comparing such an institute on the basis of whether students choose that particular college over the other would be wrong. IIIT NR can be described in three phrases: fast-paced, project-based, and pioneering. Choosing which college over the other can be your choice. But why you should choose IIIT Naya Raipur to have some reasons: IIIT Naya Raipur has its own campus. Among all the new IIITs and NITs, it has the best course structure. The institute is equipped with all the facilities that are required for the successful completion of the graduation. From labs to classroom and auditorium to sports club everything is super cool. IIIT NR has most of the faculties with immense experience in their field. They are so helpful and always guide you at each level of your course. It is the first institute in Central India that has introduced Data Science and AI in B.Tech. The institute is located 25km away from Raipur city. You’ll be close to the railway station though. So, there are no transport issues. The institute gives you better exposure than any other new NITs. You will learn, grow and enjoy your campus life thoroughly. Hopefully, this helps in rectifying your confusion about the college options.

Which laptop does IIIT Guwahati provide to B. Tech students?

SS
Shubham Sarkar Posted On : April 29th, 2021
B.Tech Computer Science, Indian Institute of Information Technology, Guwahati (2020)

My brother studied at IIIT Guwahati in the 2017 batch and each of them received a Lenovo Laptop, and the model was within G50–80. The laptop they provide is of very decent and academic-centric specification. It is sufficient enough to get you going with all your assignments and presentations, but don't expect anything fancy or stylish.

However, the sad news is from 2018 onwards, IIIT Guwahati stopped providing the students with laptops due to the following reasons:

  • Earlier the batch size was smaller hence it was easy to provide each student with a laptop. Afterward, the intake of students increased to over 200, thus making it difficult to arrange a laptop for each and every student.
  • The institute faced a lot of problems from Central Audit regarding handing out laptops and then recovering the cost in installments in subsequent years.
  • Questions regarding interest, depreciation became a major issue.

Now, students are required to bring their own laptops to carry out their academic projects. Also, many students have their own laptops before even getting into college adding to the benefit. At last, it is highly advisable to buy your own laptop which is dual booted with Windows and Ubuntu.

Is it mandatory for new students to bring a laptop in their first year in IIIT Guwahati? Doesn't the institute have a computer center or other facilities? (in new campus)

AB
Alpesh Barua Posted On : June 22nd, 2021
M.Tech Chemical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (2019)

It is not mandatory for you to bring a laptop in your first year. The new campus of IIIT Guwahati is already well-equipped with resourceful labs and you may not require a laptop immediately. There is a computer center that has 300+ computers, which is available to students. Apart from that, every department has 50+ computers.

But in this digital age, it is always better to have your own laptop. Especially if you are from CSE or ECE branch. It will prove to be really helpful for your studies. If you are interested in coding, having a good laptop is necessary. Since it is difficult to carry out meaningful coding on smartphones.
