Why does IIT Gandhinagar have a lower average package as compared to other IITs?

AS
Anisha Srivastav Posted On : July 27th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (IITGN)

Before I tell you the exact reason you need to understand that the highest packages every year for BTech at any IIT come from the Computer Science batch. Now the question is why isn’t the situation similar for IIT Gandhinagar? Well, IIT Gandhinagar did not have a B.Tech. CSE course until 2016. As a result, the average package was calculated on the basis of the packages of students in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Civil, and Material Science Engineering.

Now, the first CSE batch of IIT Gandhinagar graduates in 2020, and despite the ongoing pandemic, the average package of the institute as a whole rose from 8 LPA to 12 LPA. This in itself speaks highly of the placement scenario here which is at par with other new IITs like IIT Bhubaneswar or IIT Patna.

Moreover, IIT Gandhinagar has higher packages for almost every branch, be it Chemical, Material Science, or Civil Engineering. So judging the institute solely on the basis of average OKC gates is not justified. IIT Gandhinagar has a leader approach and packages aren’t the only concerns of the students here who are more protected towards research.

Should I leave NITK Surathkal CS for IIT Gandhinagar CS? I've finished my 1st year from NITK.

IIT Gandhinagar

You should go to IIT Gandhinagar. That being said, if you have obtained the CSE degree course at Gandhinagar, then the most probable rank you ought to have is under 1800, since the closing rank is around 1800–1900. In that case, you can opt to go for other old IITs’ by compromising with the branch. You will get far better students at old IITs, which can be a plus side to your personal development and further enhancement.

For the most part, the problem with the new IITs is that they lack to provide a greater established alumni network and good infrastructure. However, since IIT Gandhinagar was established back in 2008, you can expect decent infrastructure and facilities.

What is the experience like at the summer research internship at IIT Gandhinagar?

AS
Arpita Sinha Posted On : March 2nd, 2021
B.Tech Mechanical Engineering & Computer Science, Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (2019)

Studying here my classmates and I have experienced a lot of things, during our summer internship. Four months of research for a particular project at IIT Gandhinagar under Professor Chakraborty were indeed the best days of our life. Don't feel hopeless comparing it with other IITs. This institute, like the rest, includes everything you would require for your course. If you're concerned about the labs, they are photonically sensored proving how advanced they are. Some students were granted 24*7 access. It is advised not to fiddle with any instruments there as, at the end of the day, you're at an IIT.

Nothing matches our experience over here as it was the most excellent time of our life. Also, putting more efforts into everything will show better results. You would have to do the research yourself as your work would be closely observed. In case you'd require guidance somewhere, you'll always have help. If you're there as an intern, you'd not be handed over a big problem. Instead, what comes your way would be a tiny part of the problem.

Considering my personal experience, I had to examine an idea allotted to me. Succeeding this I was allotted and gained access to the lab.

We managed to attend a good number of presentations and workshops as, by the time an active semester was on. These workshops and presentations concerned mechanical engineering, chemistry, control theory and sustainable energy. This was the technical and the scientific part of it.

On the other hand, discussions about Indian card and board games, Indian history of science, short films, etc. were held. The students here are intellectuals and your conversations with them would be unique. You won't feel as if your time has gone in vain, instead you will learn a lot of things.

Therefore, do grab the opportunity you get to be at IIT Gandhinagar. Don't buy anything that tells you about new IITs, instead, experience it yourself and gather some memories. This institute focuses solely on research. Spending time here is definitely worth it.

What is the process to get admission into IIT Gandhinagar to study in cognitive science?

YA
Yash Arora Posted On : August 2nd, 2023
IIM Bangalore | IIT Gandhinagar

For the MSc. Cognitive Science program at IIT Gandhinagar, there are two selection rounds, a written test, and a panel interview. The application process starts from the 2nd week of January and based on your application (SOP and Academics), you are called to take a written test in the last week of February.

The written test is the same for everyone. It contains 4 comprehensive-type questions and 1 question on Data Interpretation. The paper is of 25 marks and one-hour duration.

During the interview, a panel of three individuals asks questions based on your branch. For example, if you studied B.Tech Biotechnology, you will be asked questions on it. Some questions are asked from basic Neuroscience and others are asked from the subjects that you studied during your UG.

You will also be asked about your purpose for pursuing this course. This is an important question that will increase your chances of getting selected among students from various educational backgrounds.

The selection rate for the course is very slim, around 3.3%. Usually, your GATE/NET scores are not considered and your academic record, written test performance, and interview performance are taken into consideration for selection into the MSc. Cognitive Science program offered at IIT Gandhinagar.

I would suggest you practice comprehensive-type questions and go through your application properly. Prepare well and you will surely get selected for this course at IIT Gandhinagar.

The hostels at IIT Gandhinagar are very nice. The rooms are fully ventilated and have amenities like a bed, almirah, tables, and chairs. The washrooms are very clean and have ample amounts of washing machines available for washing clothes. There is paid laundry service as well if you want your clothes to get washed.

There are a variety of events and discussions which take place in the hostel rooms so that you will not get bored. Also at the hostels, the seniors and the juniors interact and make the environment very friendly.

Beyond the above-mentioned facilities at the hostels there are other facilities as well in the hostels:

  1. Most of the hostels have air conditioning facilities from 10 PM to 6 AM.
  2. There is a provision of a fridge, oven water cooler and an induction stove on every floor.

How are the standards at IIT Gandhinagar?

DD
Disha Das Posted On : February 24th, 2021
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (2019)

It would have been much better if the question was specific about what kind of standards. Since it does not specify any, here are all the possible standards to look upon.

  1. Academic Standard: The professors are very good at what they do and are also very engaging and open to discussion. There are two types of grading which are followed- Relative Grading and Absolute Grading. This is decided by the professors for their course and the students are informed before-hand.
  2. Academic Honesty Standard: Cheating is just not acceptable. Take the risk only if you want to fail in the exam. Even though the professors are cordial, they are not lenient in case of academic honesty.
  3. Timing Standard: The professors are punctual and in fact, reach the hall before 5 minutes. So, it is your responsibility to not be late.
  4. Laboratory Standard: The laboratories have all the necessary equipment. There are lab assistants for help. There are also many specialized labs. You can borrow labs at any time for use.
  5. Construction Standard: Except for Lal Minar, all the buildings are low rise buildings and are earthquake-proof. Hostels are neat and clean.
  6. Student Safety Standard: Ragging is a punishable offence and therefore, strict actions are taken against anyone found guilty.
  1. Cleanliness Standard: There are staff to clean the buildings and hostels daily.
  1. Sustainability Standard: For its environmentally friendly design, the institution has bagged many awards. The entire campus design is made with a huge emphasis on sustainability. The hostels are equipped with solar water heaters, electricity for the entire campus is generated through solar panels; to convert biodegradable biomass into biogas, there is a waste treatment plant installed.
  1. Peer Standard: Smart and friendly peer group. Since there are students from all the corners of the country, you will learn a lot about different cultures.

The institution does not differentiate students and thus provides an equal platform for all in its decision-making process.

I got an offer for an MTech at IIT Gandhinagar and for a direct Ph.D at IIT Patna. Which one shall I take?

RT
Raktim Tarafdar Posted On : June 22nd, 2023

I think IIT Gandhinagar MTech is a safer option to go with than a direct Ph.D. from IIT Patna. IIT Gandhinagar provides better learning experiences and opportunities to explore than IIT Patna. IIT Gandhinagar CSE faculty is exceptionally good and will help you if you are willing to do Ph.D. after MTech.

Unlike PhD and MTech guarantees a degree within 2 years and so if you end up changing your mind later you will not have wasted 5-6 years. You can decide whether to do Ph.D. or not while pursuing your MTech and play safe.

The overall academic experience and campus life are better at IIT Gandhinagar than at IIT Patna. Be it the food, facilities, faculty, alumni, or placements, IIT Gandhinagar has it all.

How does one go from Ahmedabad Railway Station to IIT Gandhinagar?

RS
Reshmi Sen Posted On : March 31st, 2021
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (2019)

From the Ahmedabad Railway Station (Kalupur Junction), the campus is at a distance of approximately 30kms.

  • The common modes of transportation available from the Station to reach the college are auto-rickshaws and taxis. Although Uber/ Ola is more preferable.
  • All of these transportations will take you directly to the campus. It will cost around Rs 200–250 per ride.
  • Apart from this, the Institute also has a free shuttle service facility from VGEC (i.e. IIT Gandhinagar’s previous campus). These have been transferred to the new campus and they are very convenient.
  • If a student reaches the VGEC campus, they can then catch the shuttle from there for the permanent campus. Reaching VGEC is quite cheap and it will cost around Rs 150 by Auto or Uber.

The latest timings of the shuttle are 7:15 AM, 9 AM, 12 PM, 3 PM, 6 PM, 7:30 PM (8 PM on weekends), and 10:30 PM.

Soon, I am going to join IIT Gandhinagar. Is it true that there is a lot of ragging in IIT?

DS
Diljeet Singh Posted On : April 5th, 2021
BTech from IIT Delhi

My friend studies in IIT Gandhinagar and it is a general rule that IITians have to face some amount of ragging however, this could be true or false because he did not face any. There has not been even the mildest instance of ragging there, to date. It's good if you do not like the experience of it, but for some, it is part of the freshmen days and they cherish the bonding which develops during such events with the seniors.

  • Seniors at IIT are not cruel and do not impart it like a punishment. They have been through similar experiences and know how to work with freshers to turn them into their closest friends by the end of the academic session.
  • The student body can be approached if you feel offended in any manner, and they are quite helpful.
  • For my friend though, ragging was part of a social exercise which he cherishes.

You can also communicate your concerns with the seniors beforehand, I'd say you're fortunate to be part of IIT GN and the seniors are one of the best guides during that time for almost everything.
