How tough is a branch change at IIT Delhi?

DS
Dipti Sinha Posted On : May 19th, 2022
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (2022)

Branch change at IIT Delhi is tough, you will need to have around 8 CG. For SC, and ST students the required CG is around 7.0.  Every department allows 15 percent of students to exchange. If two students with the same CG apply for branch change, preference is given to the student with better JEE rank.

Some departments also have additional prerequisites for branch change. You may require to score a minimum B-grade in a course related to that department.

Which is a wise choice, civil engineering in IIT Bhubaneswar or biotech in IIT Delhi?

SP
Sona Panday Posted On : August 14th, 2020
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (2018)

IIT Bhubaneswar ranks 17th in the Engineering category by NIRF 2019 Rankings. Civil Engineering from IIT Bhubaneswar will be a good choice because it is one of the core engineerings. The institute has a placement percentage of 85% in the field of Civil Engineering. Students in these core engineering programs have received an average annual salary package of 15.8 lakhs per annum. The highest being 43.3 lakhs per annum. Companies like Tata Motors, TATA Steel, TATA Advanced Systems, L&T Pvt. Ltd., L&T Construction, etc have visited the campus for placement drive.

IIT Delhi ranks 2nd in the Engineering category by NIRF 2019 Rankings. Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology in IIT Delhi has a significant role that was played by biochemical engineers and biotechnologists in future industrial development of biotechnology-related processes. Today, the Department provides a structure for an integrated approach towards education, research, and development of various bioprocesses. For MTech, the students must have a BTech in Chemical or Biochemical Engineering.

Biotechnology from IIT is a good option but there is not much scope in India but has more abroad. A student requires a good CGPA and maintains a good CV to land up a good consultancy job or admission at top MBA colleges. It is a five-year course and requires 1 extra year to complete BTech, unlike other Engineering programs. Placements are better abroad than in India and you can receive an average annual salary package of 7 lakhs per annum. The highest salary was 30-40 lakhs per annum.

So a civil Engineering from IIT Bhubaneswar will be better for future to secure a job than Biotechnology from IIT Delhi.

Ranking-wise the preference order of the above-mentioned courses is

IIT Delhi > IIT Kanpur > IIT Roorkee > IIT BHU

Based on their closing rank, the branches can be arranged in the following order

Chemical>Metallurgy>Textile

This was based on general data, but if you have an inclination towards a specific branch, then go for it without much hesitation. Your passion will keep you motivated despite various challenges thrown at you. But in case you have no specific preference, then you can consider the college and branch ranking to make an informed decision.

Apart from CS and Electrical, students from most branches opt for non-core jobs which require much more than their core academics for placements. In that case, you can prefer IIT BHU over IIT Roorkee.

Ultimately, the final decision is yours to make. Choose wisely considering various factors like location, friends, etc,

IITD is an old well-reputed IIT. Faculties of the Mechanical Department at IITD are very good and experienced. Also, Peer Group at IITD is very competitive since many top rankers join this college. Mechanical Engineering course curriculum is good and one which provides industry skills. Besides Academics IITD too has many Clubs, Societies where students can join to develop different skills. What do IIT Delhi hostels look like?

SD
Sikha Dasgupta Posted On : May 19th, 2022
M.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (2017)

IIT Delhi has 13 hostels in total, 11 boys and 2 girls. The hostels are well-equipped with all basic amenities. There are 24*7 water supply, electricity, and internet facilities. Most of the hostels have 3-4 floors and there are no lifts. Two of the hostels are newly constructed. These have lifts and better water facilities.

IIT Delhi hostel rooms are clean and well-maintained. But students need t clean their rooms by themselves. There are washrooms attached to each rooms. Washrooms are cleaned daily.

The mess timing is fixed. But the night canteen stays open until 3:30 am.

Which is better, IIT Bhubaneswar for EE or IIT Delhi for biotechnology?

SM
Subhashree Modak Posted On : August 14th, 2020
B.Tech. from Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (2020)

Biotechnology and EE are two very different branches to be compared with each other. But if you are not sure which branch you like more here are a few pointers about both the colleges which may help you make the decision.

IIT Bhubaneswar offers decent placements. The placement for EE was 86% in 2019 with an average salary of 11.44 LPA. IIT Bhubaneswar is divided into many schools instead of branches. School of Electrical Science has Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Computer Science, and Knowledge Engineering. The infrastructure of IIT Bhubaneswar is good as it is newly built. Faculty members are qualified and well experienced. IIT Bhubaneswar is located outside Bhubaneswar city and the campus offers a good academic environment away from the city.

IIT Delhi is one of the top 3 IITs. The placements are better if we compare it to IIT Bhubaneswar with an average package of 16 LPA. Biotechnology is a very diverse course. Multiple options are available if one wants to go into research. In this department, the placements are not so good. Core companies hardly come for placements. But placements for non-core companies are open. The campus is small as compared to other IITs but the infrastructure is quite good. The college is right in the middle of the city and provides easy connectivity to another place.

Now, if you are looking for better college life go for IIT Delhi but if you are interested in EE go for IIT Bhubaneswar.

KS
Kunal Sharma Posted On : April 6th, 2023

Different branches have different opening ranks and one needs to clear the cutoff to secure a seat in that specific branch. JEE Cutoff 2023 will be decided on the following parameters

  • Previous year’s cutoff trends
  • The number of candidates who appeared for the exam
  • Availability of seats at IIT Delhi
  • The difficulty level of JEE Advanced 2023
  • Category of Candidates

Since JoSAA hasn’t yet revealed the Cutoff for this year, let’s consider the previous year's cutoff to get an idea of the rank required to secure admission to IIT Delhi.

What should I choose: IITD MNC or IIT (BHU) CSE?

PS
Pratiyush Singh Posted On : February 18th, 2022
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology Varanasi

Both are good options. If you have an inclination towards programming then choose CSE, otherwise, go for Mathematics and Computing. MnC at IITD is slowly becoming one of the hostess branches. As the trend indicates, it will become the first choice among IIT toppers in the coming years.

You will receive good placement opportunities in both IIT D and IIT BHU. CSE and MnC both have good job options in the same fields. The only difference is MnC students get placement offers from Mathematics and Finance fields too.

What can be a better option (I have no interest), IIT Delhi biotech or IIT Kanpur civil?

TA
Tithi Aggrawal Posted On : April 19th, 2023
Lives in New Delhi

With no specific area of interest, the best option for you is IIT Delhi Biotechnology. Here are a few points to support my opinion

  • Old IITs have the benefit of equal opportunities for all students irrespective of their branch.
  • You are eligible for placements in all types of companies including software.
  • As a biotechnology student, you get to do internships in various sectors like IT, finance, etc.
  • Exceptionally good grades can fetch you good packages
  • The quality of college life is better ij IIT Delhi than in Kanpur.

IIT Delhi is the dream college of many owing to the excellent brand name and opportunities it offers. Trust me, once you are inside your branch will hardly matter.
