How is the life of an MS (by research) student at IIT Madras?

AB
Aditi Banerjee Posted On : March 28th, 2023
Lives in Bangalore

One of my friends was an MS student at IIT Madras and she loved the time spent pursuing that course.

  1. It gave her a sort of exhilarating experience of freedom to pursue whatever and however she wanted in her academics.
  2. The research helps you learn how to tackle the challenges on your own.
  3. Since you do not belong to a certain class, you might feel lonely sometimes but for some this might actually be a good thing. You get more time to invest in studying for your research.
  4. A typical morning of an MS student at IIT Madras begins around 8-9 and there are no fixed timings as you don’t have any classes to attend. You wake up and check if the computation you had left overnight on the supercomputer has converged or not.
  5. After this, go to the mess for breakfast and then head to the labs.
  6. You start coding and solving problems. If you face a problem you read and try to get a solution on your own. You keep working till 1: 30 after which you head to have lunch.
  7. At around 4 30 in the evening, your guide approaches you to get updates on your work for the day. You get to take a tea/coffee break with them which would not have been possible as a BTech and MTech student. They guide you not only academically but also enlighten you on fundamentals like professionalism, discipline, humility, principles, and morals of a human being.
  8. Post the tea break you are back with coding in your lab or reading a scientific paper.
  9. After a while, you can pack yourself and leave for the hostel. Now you can catch up on your sleep, watch anything.

The routine of a typical day of an MS student is mostly self-driven and thus varies from person to person.  You get immense exposure as you have to work with BTech students, Ph.D. students, and sometimes even with the placement committee. Unlike BTech and MTech students, you have practical and theoretical knowledge of many concepts.

Is it possible for an average student to crack the AIIMS in Delhi?

AM
Anuja Mishra Posted On : May 27th, 2023
MBBS student at Malda Medical College and Hospital

AIIMS Delhi is targeted by genius minds from the entire country. It’s their determination to get admission to AIIMS that drives them to ace the exam. So with the right level of dedication and commitment, even average students can crack AIIMS Delhi.

Such students need to work day and night with minimal distractions. A fixed timetable should be made and duly followed if you are adamant about AIIMS Delhi. On average, they need to do 6 to 8 hours of self-study in which they study Chemistry Physics, and Biology and also revise the previous chapters.

Additionally, students who consider themselves average should join online test series so that they can become familiar with online patterns and improve their writing speed as well.

Don’t let anything demotivate you and keep striving for your future.

Which one has got better placement and higher average packages ISI kolkata M.Stat or math and computing from any of the 5 old IITs?

SC
Sagnik Chakraborty Posted On : September 16th, 2021
B.Stat (Hons.) from Indian Statistical Institute (2020)

I have friends studying in ISI Kolkata and old IITs. Based on my conversations with them, I will say there is no doubt that M.stat students from ISI have better chances of landing jobs with really lucrative salaries. You will be surprised by the fact that ISI is known for its 100% placement ratio for M.Stat. This is not the case you would be able to find in any IIT whether old or new.

  • Even if you pursue a B.tech degree from IIT Bombay (an old and reputed IIT), the institute never succeeds in maintaining a cent-percent placement record. You can even cross-check the stats from IIT Bombay’s website.
  • Students studying mathematics and computing students from IITs, most of them are more inclined toward research careers than jobs.
  • M.Stat degree from ISI is unique in India. The course is highly reputed and the institute itself is far ahead of most Indian institutes in the field of stats, math, and economics.

I have attached a video that will brief you on the ISI Placement scenario

Overall, ISI stands as a premier institute for fields especially related to stats, math, and economics with a 100% placement ratio.

How can I get admission in BHU through a paid seat?

AT
Alok Tiwari Posted On : November 18th, 2022
Studied at Banaras Hindu University

To know how to get admission to BHU through a paid seat, you must first know what exactly a paid seat is.

Every year BHU conducts entrance exams during the months of April, May and June. After this, the university releases the cutoff list. The students who fail to reach the cutoff but are just slightly below it are offered paid seats.

The admission process of both regular and paid seats is the same. A call letter will be sent for counseling.

The biggest drawback of paid seats is that the fees are extremely high compared to the regular ones.

I'm about to pursue my B.Tech from MSIT (CSE). I've heard that people in IPU don't get time to pursue other stuff like programming and other hobbies. Is it true?

B.Tech at MSIT

One of my friends is a final year student at MAIT - IT. And here is some statistics provided by him, which I think will clear your doubts.

  • Several students from MSIT, more than even a 100, are seen to regularly participate in online coding contests. You check on Codechef to find out the ratings, participants, and various similar information. Apart from that, students actively participate in various other platforms like TopCoder, SPOJ, Codeforce, HackerRank, and more. MAIT has many great programmers.
  • You will encounter many such individuals on campus who are preparing for examinations like GRE, GATE, CAT, and more.
  • The same students are also involved in several clubs and societies, besides initiating blueprints of their own startup. This is despite managing above 80% academically.
  • Students also engage in sports like football, cricket, badminton, and various others.

You can have hobbies and maintain your academic profile side by side. It depends on whether or not you are interested in accomplishing it.

Which one will be better, getting a BBA from IIM Indore or Christ University Bangalore?

A
Admin Posted On : May 16th, 2024

Firstly, IIM Indore does not offer a BBA degree. Christ University has an excellent curriculum of BBA. In IIM Indore, you can opt for Integrated Programme in Management which is a five year degree with the last two years of PGDM. However, if you want to study BBA, then Christ University is your best option. The faculty, curriculum, and campus life are one of the finest. I have friends who have pursued a BBA from Christ and they tell me that the campus life at Christ is the best in India. They host multiple events throughout the years which gives you a lot of exposure. Also, the placements are top-notch. The top recruiters such as Amazon, Accenture, Cognizant, KPMG, etc visit the college to recruit the students.

How many marks are required to get NIT Surathkal in JEE main?

RT
Raktim Tarafdar Posted On : September 15th, 2023

The JEE Mains score required to get into NIT Surathkal depends on the branch you are seeking.

If you wish to study B.Tech CSE, you’ll require roughly between 200-220 marks as a general candidate. But if your aim is to simply get into NITK with any branch, aim for a 160+ score.

The campus of NIT Surathkal is really beautiful. The college has its own private beach and a top notch infrastructure. The campus is spread across roughly 300 acres, and it is one of the top engineering colleges in India.

I would recommend you work really hard and give your best shot to get into NIT Surathkal.

Studied at Indian Institute of Management Indore

If we are to compare PGP at IIM Indore Mumbai and PGP at IIM Indore then the former is without a doubt better.

  • Batch Size: IIM Indore Mumbai has a batch size of 65-70 students whereas that of IIM Indore is 450 and above. So, you will be among competitive peers.
  • Better Location: Mumbai is known to be the financial capital of India. major corporates are situated here. Therefore, various esteemed companies visit the Mumbai IIM Indore campus for recruitment purposes. The corporates hesitate to visit the Indore campus as it is a bit farther. Hence, the students at the Mumbai IIM campus have leverage over this matter.
  • Class Schedule: Lectures at the Mumbai campus are held at a fixed time that is 9:15 AM to 4:15 PM. No lectures are held after that time. Whereas at the IIM Indore campus the lectures are not held at any particular timings.

At the Mumbai-IIM Indore campus, guest lectures and training sessions are held by influential business leaders on a regular basis. This is not found at the IIM Indore campus. Moreover, at Mumbai-IIM the campus is fully air-conditioned and has proper Wi-Fi systems.

Which one is better out of these: NIT Silchar, NIT Patna or IIIT Jabalpur?

TD
Tezal Dahiya Posted On : August 31st, 2023

According to me, IIIT Jabalpur is way ahead of the other two colleges. It is followed by NIT Patna. Here are some advantages of IIIT Jabalpur-

  • Infrastructure- The campus is spread across 300 acres and has a well-furnished library.
  • Placements - The placements are good and improving with each year. Here is the year-wise highest salary trend for the college-
IIIT Jabalpur

The placements for Mechanical, CSE and ECE are quite impressive. Other students opt for CAT/GMAT/higher studies abroad. The college is just 4 km away from the Jabalpur airport which facilitates more companies to visit the campus for placements. Because of good connectivity to major metropolitan cities of India, the placements are expected to increase exponentially in the coming years.

  • Hostels and Campus Life- As a fresher, you’ll be allotted a three-seater hostel room. From the second year onwards, you’ll get a separate room. Each hostel has two messes and a canteen, the mess food is good. The hostel canteens are open till 2 (at night).

Campus life is great. You can play Volleyball, Cricket, and Football with your friends till late evening. The college fests- Gusto and Abhikalpan are much awaited.

  • Sports, Clubs and Gym- The college offers good sports facilities. There are football, cricket, basketball, volleyball, badminton & tennis grounds. Hostels have TT tables. Various clubs like dance club, drama club, etc. are also present. There is a gym facility on campus, provided free of cost to the students.
  • Faculty - The faculty is excellent. It includes IIT alumni and former students of prestigious US universities. You’ll get to learn from the best.
  • Other - The CSE department has good placements and curriculum. The college has collaborations with 6 Japanese Companies and 6 Japanese institutions.

Therefore, out of NIT Silchar, NIT Patna and IIIT Jabalpur, I would suggest you go for the third one.
