While applying to the US for an MS, are NITs (Surathkal, Trichy, Warangal) considered the same level as the new IITs?

TD
Tezal Dahiya Posted On : September 14th, 2023

Top NITs like Surathkal, Trichy, and Warangal are considered close to if not at par with old IITs and definitely better than some new IITs.

Unless you are from the top IITs, admission to foreign universities for an MS does not depend on the college you are from. Many students from top IITs go to foreign universities every year. For non-IITians what matters is the project, internships, UG research quality, and extracurriculars. In fact, the sole reason IITians make it to top foreign universities is their strong determination and grasp of these aspects. Yes, the IIT alumni network does help you in the research internship but ultimately it’s your efforts that matter.

So even if you are not an IITian, keep working hard and you are likely to get admission to top foreign universities.

How is Chemical Engineering at NIT Surathkal?

SG
Shikha Ghosal Posted On : September 14th, 2023
Studied BTech in Computer Science, National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal (2019)

The Chemical Engineering branch at NIT Surathkal isn’t well-known because of its obsolete curriculum and poor placement scenario. I hope you haven’t yet joined it but if you have known that there is no turning back. It’s better to start working hard to compensate for the poor branch than to sit and regret.

It’s better to opt for Chemical in Trichy or Warangal. Otherwise, you can study hard in the 1st year and opt for a branch change. Even if you fail to get CSE/IT, even civil and mining will do.

I have many friends who joined this department recently and all of them are regretting their decision big time. Some even call it the worst in the institution. So I will recommend you to go for Chemical in NIT Warangal instead.

M.Tech from National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal (2019)

Since NITK is a well-established and popular college, doing M.Tech from here will always be worth it. The curriculum is coherent and very specific.

Not to mention about the beautiful infrastructure of the place. NITK is the only college in India to have its own beach and that is a major attraction spot for many applicants. It creates a very serene spot for academic and personal growth of an individual.

It offers a good learning and growing exposure to the students undergoing M. Tech studies and a worthwhile placement coverage as well. It holds good records of placements in top MNCs across the globe with a lot of respectable packages.

IIIT Bangalore iMtech in CSE or NIT Surathkal BTech in CSE, what should I choose?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : September 14th, 2023

NIT Surathkal B.Tech in CSE is definitely a better choice because it's one of the oldest institutes with a rich legacy. The department has lots of establishments in academics as well as industry. There are several well-established student activity bodies and an elaborate alumni base with a coding background.

I am strongly against you joining an integrated program at the bachelor's level because you first need to know the exact domain you are interested in. If you realize that you have taken the wrong branch then spending 5 years will become very difficult. BTech gives you enough time and opportunities to analyze what your interests are you can not decide, after 3-4 semesters, you will be able to judge yourself overall. Also, a B.Tech in CSE from NIT Karnataka with a good GRE score may help you get admission offers of MS abroad.

So go for NIT Surathkal BTech in CSE without any second thoughts.

How is NIT Surathkal metallurgy?

Metallurgy at NIT Surathkal is a very good branch as there is a rising requirement of materials science and engineering and their number of students taking admission in this branch is comparatively less than other branches like Civil, Mechanical or Electrical so you can expect less competition in this field.

The course is really good and it gives a strong base to the students for their higher studies which is quite important in this field. The department is now called Metallurgical and Materials Engineering and it focuses more on materials engineering. The professors here are very good at their job and are enthusiastic about teaching. They teach very well and create an interest among the students.

The facilities are not that great but are good enough as an engineering college. There is one SEM and XRD, metallurgy lab, materials testing lab, and a good heat treatment lab. The placement records are quite good too and it exposes you to various companies so you can secure a job in both core and non-core companies.

Should I opt for Chemical Engineering at NIT Surathkal or at NIT Warangal?

Namrata Das Posted On : September 16th, 2023

Since you are looking for the same branch, I think you should give preference to the institutes. That being said, it’s not a brainer that NIT Warangal is much better than NIT Surathkal in terms of academics, job opportunities, and campus life. In fact both the colleges give tough competition to each other since they are among the top 3 NITs.

The only reason I am giving more preference to NIT Warangal is because it has a branch change policy which NIT Surathkal does not. So if after studying Chemical Engineering you realize that it’s not your cup of tea, you can opt for a branch change. However, it’s important to note that this process is neither easy nor tough.

One of my friends studied at NIT Warangal and told me that every year many chemical and biotech students slide to branches like ECE, CSE, Mechanical, etc.

So both are great options with NIT Warangal having a slight upper hand over NIT Surathkal.

What should I choose: Electronics and Instrumentation in BITS Pilani Goa Campus, Electrical and Electronics in NIT Surathkal?

AC
Ankit Chaudhari Posted On : March 21st, 2023

To make an informed decision, it's crucial to understand that changing your choice based on the college you get into won't have much impact. You should acknowledge that Electronics and Instrumentation in BITS Pilani Goa Campus and Electrical and Electronics in NIT Surathkal are two distinct engineering streams with different colleges, and both colleges are excellent in their own right.

Your selection of the branch should entirely depend on your interest. If you are intrigued by electrical or electronic circuits or have been fascinated by electricity since childhood, EEE is the perfect fit for you. Conversely, if you have an interest in instruments or daily life gadgets that make our lives more comfortable, you should opt for E&I.

Keep in mind that EEE focuses on circuit design and development, while E&I focuses on circuit implementation in industries or the real world. EEE is a core branch that concentrates on its domain, but E&I combines all other core branches such as Mechanical, Electronics, Electrical, and even Computer Science.

Both EEE and E&I offer excellent job prospects in the market. E&I graduates can work in core fields or software industries. There is a plethora of industries related to electrical and electronics, so EEE also offers ample job opportunities. Therefore, both branches are exceptional in their way. Choose the one that piques your interest and don't sacrifice your area of interest due to college selection.

I have a choice between IT (Information Technology) in NIT, Surathkal and CS (computer science) in RVCE, Bangalore. Which one would be a better choice in terms of placements, Brand name etc.?

RS
Rima Sarkar Posted On : March 22nd, 2021
IIT BHU (2019)

Between the options, you should choose NIT Surathkal IT. Here are the reasons why.

  • The syllabus difference between IT and CSE is not so much in this institute.
  • The placement process in the institute is exceptional, specifically for the circuit branches, including IT, CSE, ECE, and EEE. However, in the last year, students are recruited by Google and Microsoft.
  • NITK has its own brand name. Maybe it is an NIT, but the students here get a lot of exposure. JEE Mains toppers mainly take admission in this institute every year.

Here is a full overview of NIT Surathkal

You will have to stay here in the hostel, which provides a good experience for them. During the tenure of the course, you will learn how to take care of yourself. Also, if your hometown is Bangalore, then you can frequently visit home.
