IIT Madras invites applications for P.hD and MS programs under regular/part-time/external schemes. If you have more than 65% in your UG and a decent GATE score, you will probably get a call for a written test. Once shortlisted, you will have to write an online or offline written test. The syllabus is similar to the GATE syllabus. If you clear the written test, you will get an interview call.
Frankly speaking, Biotechnology is yet to make it big at least in India. It's in its initial stage and still requires a lot of time to be at par with other branches of Engineering. India has little to offer in this field and thus job opportunities are limited or almost non-existent.
Outside India, Biotechnology is in full bloom offering splendid courses in the most renowned foreign universities. One of its fields, Synthetic Biology is one of the most pursued fields abroad and offers excellent opportunities.
Here is the bright side, IIT Madras has ties with many foreign universities thus opening gates for its students to step out and gain exposure in the form of semester exchange programs which is not possible at IITR.
Let me warn you that Biotechnology as a field has limited or no placement scope owing to its research-oriented nature. So if it's a high salary you are after, it's not too late to look for another branch as this field is only for the passionate.
The curriculum of Engineering Physics at both IIT Madras and IIT Delhi is equally instructional and well-structured. The demand for this discipline has witnessed a steady increase over the past few years.
If I had to choose between IIT Delhi and IIT Madras, I would have opted for the latter. This is because
In my opinion, unless it’s a matter of locational preference, go for IIT Madras over IIT Delhi any day. You won’t be able to enjoy your college life to the fullest here.
I have a friend at IIT Madras and he was able to provide some information regarding this. According to him, nothing is happening as such with DMK and AIADMK. Some of their volunteers come around the gate of IIT Madras and protest against an issue that was just produced by fake media.
After this, the police detain them to protect the students and protect those inside the campus.
After this, some irrelevant information is put out on Facebook. The media captures this and posts anything and everything on their website. While at IIT Madras, people make fun of all of these events.
If you're interested in the IITs and their programs, here's some information to consider:
It's worth noting that this is one perspective on the IITs and their programs, and other factors may also be important to consider when choosing a college or university. It's always a good idea to research multiple options and weigh the pros and cons of each before making a decision.
To begin with a comparison, both institutions are vastly different. The curricula, the course structures, the admission requirements at the institutes are quite unique. These factors depend on the kind of crowd at the university.
Comparison:
The table below will give you a brief overview of the two colleges.
Category |
IIT HSEE |
Ashoka University |
Average CTC |
13.6 LPA |
7-8 LPA |
Fee range |
23,070-4.18 lakhs |
9.35 lakhs-24.55 lakhs |
These were a few examples of the type of variety in curriculum one experiences at Ashoka University, and it's embedded in all of their programs. Although the administration is not very amiable. My friends at IIT HSEE face a similar issue with the administration and the courses are not as varied either.
The final decision is yours. You should choose based on what is the outcome you want from your degree.
Whether you should choose MS in IIT Madras Or MTech in IIT Hyderabad depend on what your plans are after completing your Masters.
If you want to get employed right away, MTech is a more preferable option than MS. IIT Madras being one of the oldest and highly reputed IITs, is better for an MTech than IIT Hyderabad, a relatively new IIT. You will be surprised to know that IIT Madras has been consistently ranked 1 by the NIRF Rankings in 2022 for the fourth time in a row and Internationally, IIT Madras was ranked 255 in the QS World University Rankings of 2022.
I think pursuing MS from IIT Madras is a good choice given the quality of research work at IIT Madras. The only problem is research takes around 2.5-3.5 years while MTech can be done in 2 years. Here are the placement statistics of both the institutes
IIT Madras MTech placements
Highest CTC |
INR 46.08 LPA |
Median CTC |
INR 13.02 LPA |
Number of students registered |
277 |
Number of students placed |
212 |
Placement percentage |
76.53% |
If you are certain of doing a PhD after your Masters, go for MS from IIT Madras definitely. But if you want to sit for placements within 2 years, an MTech program from either IITs will be helpful.
Admissions into IIT Madras are possible through ranks ranging from 1-10000 depending on the category, branch, number of seats available, etc.
To make the most out of IIT resources make sure you have clarity of goals and know what and why you are doing.

The basic differences between MR at IIT Madras and Ph.D. at IIT Madras are
Despite these differences, the general routine and schedule of both MS and Ph.D. are similar. Ultimately, more than your program, your research topic and performance will matter.
My friend hails from Mumbai and was a student in IIT Madras. She claimed that the weather in Chennai is always hot and humid which can be very frustrating at times. But after a few months, you get used to it and it is not that big of an inconvenience.
IIT Madras has both south as well as north Indian messes so students rarely face any issues regarding it. A number of canteens are there that provide food satisfying taste buds in every corner of the country.
Locals in Chennai cannot speak Hindi and you will find most of them talking either in Tamil or broken English, locals don't speak Hindi. So the language barrier might be a bit troublesome especially when you are out and want to explore. It’s advisable to learn some basic Tamil.
Although IIT Madras welcomes a mixed bag of students, the majority comprises South Indians. However, there is no bias in academics toward South Indians at IIT Madras.
All in all, I refuse to believe that the institute is partial toward South Indians. In fact, you will find many friendly South Indians here at IIT Madras.
