What should a fresher know about Thapar University?

AM
Agnish Mukherjee Posted On : August 8th, 2023
BE from Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology

These are a few things you should know about Thapar University as a fresher-

  1. The faculty has both kinds of teachers- some are really good at teaching, some are equally bad at it. Though all the teachers are well-qualified, not all of them are good at teaching.
  2. Maintain an 8+ CGPA during your first year. Other than that, don’t stress much about the placements, they are quite far off as of now.
  3. Freshmen get hostel rooms on a sharing basis, with often 4 people in a single one. You will make good friends and mix well with the crowd. As you become a sophomore, you will get to choose among single rooms, double rooms, AC rooms, etc. The mess food is good and the night canteen is a bonus.
  4. The entire Thapar University campus is ragging-free.
  5. Patiala is a calm town. Thapar University campus is flanked by biodiversity parks on two sides, it has a forest/garden with a man-made lake inside it.
  6. The senior-junior interaction is great and you will befriend a lot of seniors through societies, clubs, etc. You will meet new people and make some amazing friends regardless of your cultural background or personality type. There is something for everyone over here.

Your life at Thapar will be filled with opportunities and distractions. It depends upon you how well you establish a balance between your studies and other activities.

Which one is the best in CSE, IIT Dhanbad or IIT Bhubaneswar?

KD
Kathakali Dutta Posted On : August 14th, 2020
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Dhanbad (2021)

IIT Dhanbad is better in CSE as compared to IIT Bhubaneswar. IIT Dhanbad, established in 1926, is one of the oldest institutes in the country. On the contrary, IIT Bhubaneswar, established in 2008, comes under the list of new IITs.

The overall placement package for CSE at IIT Bhubaneswar might be more alluring than IIT Dhanbad, according to 2019 placement statistics there was 100% placement from the CSE branch and the average placement package offered was around 11.4 LPA while the highest went up to 39 LPA. However, in IIT Dhanbad, the placement rate of the CSE students were 90.23% and the highest CTC offered was 39.5 LPA.
Besides the number of students at IIT Dhanbad is more than IIT Bhubaneswar. IIT Dhanbad has an excellent coding culture and organizes a vast number of technical and cultural fests.

The number of opportunities in CSE offered by both institutions is almost the same. However, IIT Dhanbad definitely has a slight edge over IIT Bhubaneswar. Being one of the oldest institutes, IIT Dhanbad has better infrastructure as compared to IIT Bhubaneswar.

It has also produced a vast alumni number which are placed in the highest echelons of government organizations and global MNCs. In all other academic and hostel facilities, both the colleges are on par with each other. The faculty in the CSE department at IIT Dhanbad is also better than IIT Bhubaneswar.

IM
Ishita Mitra Posted On : August 14th, 2020
M.Sc PhysicsIndian Institute of Technology Dhanbad (2019)

The answer to this question depends on various factors but to keep it short let’s talk about the NIRF-2019 ranking (engineering category) and placement statistics (CSE Branch) of the institutes.

IIT Dhanbad has been ranked at 15th among NIRF Ranking 2019. According to the placement statistics of 2019-20, the percentage of b-tech computer science students placed during campus placements was 90.23%. The percentage of B. Tech & M. Tech in Computer Science & Engineering (dual degree) placed during campus placements was 66.67% with the highest CTC of INR 23.80 LPA. The highest salary package offered in the computer science branch (B. Tech) was 39.50 LPA. The overall average package offered in all the b-tech branches was 15.50 LPA. Major recruiters include Accenture, Goldman Sach, Synopsys, Microsoft, Flipkart, Siemens, Amazon, Adobe, etc.

Indian Institute Of Technology, Bhubaneswar has a NIRF Ranking-17. The placement statistics 2019-20 reveal the overall percentage of b-tech students placed during campus placement drives was around 89.55%. The percentage of computer science students placed was 100% this year but the average CTC offered to the students was less than that of IIT Dhanbad. The highest package offered to the computer science branch was INR 39 LPA. The major recruiters included Amazon, Adobe, Accenture, Akash Institute, BYJU, Atkins, Angel Broking, DELL, Honeywell, INTEL technology, etc. The average package offered was 11.90 LPA.

Finally, other facilities such as labs, faculty, and other infrastructure at ISM Dhanbad is better than that of IIT Bhubaneswar as the former is one of the oldest elite institutes of the country.

However, the final decision is yours to make considering both pros and cons for different aspects.

KM
Kaushal Madnani Posted On : October 30th, 2023
VNIT, Graduated 2019

VNIT Nagpur has some ‘official’ and ‘unofficial’ rules for 1st year students.

These are-

  1. First year boys have to be back at the hostel by 8 pm, and first year girls, by 7:30 pm.
  2. Your SPs and JPs will make sure that your room doors are shut by 10 pm, and room lights are off by 11 pm.
  3. You’ll have to sign in and out on the hostel register.
  4. The dress code is formal shirts and pleated pants for boys, and salwar-kurta for girls.
  5. First year students have no access to canteens, and internet facilities.

Though these rules seem rather strict, they will help you bond better with your peers. Despite all the strictness, you’ll enjoy each and every second of your first year at VNIT Nagpur.

What is the concept of the wait list going on in IIM? How many wait lists did IIM Nagpur release?

ST
Shikha Thakur Posted On : January 17th, 2023
MBA in Digital Marketing, Faculty of Management Studies, University of Delhi (2023)

The waitlist movement at IIM Nagpur is a pretty simple process. Let’s understand the entire process through steps.

  • Firstly the waitlist students are divided into 3 groups namely Waitlist 1, Waitlist 2 and Waitlist 3.
  • The above categories are made on the basis of the composite score in descending order
  • Whenever a student does not accept the order or withdraws admission, his seat is offered to the person with the highest composite score in Waitlist 1 category.
  • This process continues till the entire Waitlist 1 group has been offered a seat.
  • The other two Waitlist groups are also exhausted in similar ways only if there are vacancies.

The ones who had laid Waitlist money get the amount refunded in case they are not offered a seat.

Is the batch size at IIM Indore a cause of concern for prospective students?

AS
Ankit Sharma Posted On : August 28th, 2021
Studied at Indian Institute of Management Indore (2020)

One of my friends recently graduated from IIM Indore and according to him, if you are decent in your studies and among the top 70% of your batch, then there would not be any issue regarding the Batch size. Top 70% means you will have to be among the first 70% of students who got placed. Beyond that range, there would be little difficulty.

Bigger batch size has its own advantages and disadvantages. There might be more of a disadvantage while you are in the institute. But these things work out once the college gets over and you will definitely get a larger support base for your career from your peers.

Why students go for ies after mtech from iit Delhi?

SG
Sushmita Gupta Posted On : April 5th, 2023
studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi

Following the trend, many MTech from IIT Delhi students opt for IES after completing their post-graduation. The reasons why most students do so are listed below:

  • Many branches for IIT Delhi MTech are laid back and require no sincere efforts. This attracts students who have other future goals and use IIT Delhi as a stepping stone
  • The facilities are good and students are given accommodation and even paid a stipend, which is more than enough for a comfortable survival for a few years
  • IIT Delhi has many coaching institutes in close proximity thus students sometimes pursue their ulterior motives by preparing for other higher education.
  • A major reason for this rising trend is the fall in the GATE level, making it easy for average students to get admission to MTech. The industries should also give importance to R&D so that people with serious career goals can get good jobs.

However, this trend is not justified as such students are not only wasting the money of citizens but also stealing the seat of a genuine aspirant who has to forgo their seat.
