Which is the best hostel in IIT Madras?

SG
Sunit Ghose Posted On : July 26th, 2021
Dual Degree (B.Tech+M.Tech) Mechanical Engineering & Product Design, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (2020)

IIT Madras has also been known for its good hostels. All the hostels of IIT Madras boast of a badminton court, volleyball court, football grounds, and also large sitting spaces. Below are the best hostels considered on the campus of IIT Madras

  • Narmada: - Narmada Hostel is the best out of all the hostels due to its prime location. It’s located near Himalaya (Place for lunch and dinner) and the best part about it is that it has a bus stop located near it which allows access to almost everywhere.
  • Godavari Hostel: - It is situated right opposite the Himalaya mess and it also has a garden in front of it. During the nights it provides excellent views of the city and the whole vibe of the place and makes it more comforting. It does not have a bus stop, however, it is close to Jamuna bus stop. Moreover, you can get buses from stops such as Gurunath which is the closest hostel, or the Taramani Gate.
  • Jamuna Hostel: - Jamuna is the starting point of the bus services which runs through the entire premise. Jamuna Hostel also has the newest eateries and has a whole bunch of shops to choose where to get your snacks from.

Hope this helps.

Is naval architecture and ocean engineering in IIT Madras a good choice?

JS
Jayeeta Saha Posted On : March 31st, 2023
M.Tech in Ocean Engineering at IIT Madras (2019)

The Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering branch at IIT Madras offers courses over 3 levels

B.Tech level: This level offers the maximum job prospects one could ask for.

  • The placements of BTech students of this branch are excellent although core offers are only a handful. This allows students to switch fields and enter banking, finance, or consultancy.
  • Some students go for MBAs or start preparing for government exams.
  • Those interested in Hughes studies go for a master's or a Ph.D. usually in top foreign institutes.

Masters level: The job prospects are similar to the bachelor's level but most students prefer going for a Ph.D. or a job

  • The placement scenario is identical to BTech placements except that Masters students can also make it into companies that need mechanical or civil background. This is mainly because of their prior knowledge of mechanical or civil branches from the bachelor's degree.
  • Most MTech students go to a job profile that aligns with their bachelor's domain
  • Masters students are more skilled and experienced and thus are offered more core jobs in comparison to BTechbstudents
  • For those interested in higher studies, the option for Ph.D. from a top foreign university is open. Some even convert their Master's into Ph.D. at IIT Madras.
  • Other than Civil and Mechanical companies, Masters's students are offered a plethora of non-core jobs with excellent packages.

Ph.D. level: This is the ultimate level and has very few job prospects

  • No placements are offered to Ph.D. students and most of them enter Academia and become professors in top colleges
  • Those who are hungry for research, continue their passion by becoming Postdocs
  • A very few are inclined towards startups based on their research work and open one of their or join someone else’s

No matter which level you belong to, the students of Naval get to experience the excellent campus life of IIT Madras and get equal exposure to extracurricular activities. The branch may provide limited core opportunities but remember IIT Madras attracts the best non-core jobs and someone open to challenges takes it from a positive perspective.

What should I choose between Mechanical at BITS Pilani and Engineering Design at IIT Madras?

AG
Aditi Goswami Posted On : March 31st, 2023
studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (2018)

Engineering Design course offered at IIT Madras is a better option than BITS Pilani Mechanical Engineering. This program is a perfect combination of 60% Mechanical and 30% Electrical engineering. The curriculum is designed to suit the demands of the coming future in terms of developing a product from scratch.

ED from IIT Madras will provide better options for you in comparison to Mechanical at BITS Pilani. You can choose between

  • Higher studies (or)
  • Placements

Higher studies: IITs have a better brand name than BITS globally and thus the IIT tag will fetch you the best higher studies opportunities in top foreign universities. Despite being a new department, ED has alumni in very reputed colleges like MIT, Georgia Tech, etc.

Placements: In this aspect too, IIT sits way ahead of BITS as many top companies just visit IITs. Specifically speaking, IIT Madras has scored the best in comparison to other IITs in terms of placements. The placements statistics of the ED department of IIT Madras are next in level to CS and Electrical offering better placements than Mechanical, and Chemical in terms of the number of students placed as well as the average package offered.

For either of the options, ED from IIT Madras seems to be the better option than Mechanical from BITS Pilani, especially considering the double fees you will have to pay in BITS.

What should a student do when he/she gets a U grade in IIT Madras?

AS
Aditi Sengupta Posted On : March 31st, 2023
Studied at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras

U grade in IIT Madras means you are Unfit for the particular course. Now, this may seem devastating but you don’t have to lose all hope. Try to meet the professor who has given you that grade and hold a meaningful conversation trying to get your point across and understand his viewpoint as well. Teachers don’t want you to suffer, they just want to reprimand you for your improvement.

The U grade might make you feel that you are unable to cope with the IIT standards while others can but trust me many students who were toppers in class 12 face a setback at IIT because the subjects are extremely challenging. It’s best to ask for professors' guidance and important topics to cover.

Once you taste failure, you will become more determined and thus might even work in your favor. Many successful people have terrible failure stories until they achieve success. The immense pressure and high scores of your batch mates might demotivate you but you will have to fight back and come back stronger. Don’t let failure make you feel worthless as many people value you. Just make the most out of your failures.

How are campus selections in IIT Madras?

AB
Aarti Bora Posted On : March 30th, 2023
IIT Madras, IISc Bangalore

The campus placements of most IITs are superior to other Engineering colleges. The new IITs have fewer companies in comparison to the older IITs yet the payscale of IITs, in general, is very good.

IIT Madras gives more importance to Day-wise placements but I feel one should look for matching profiles instead. This is because there is a major chunk of good companies visiting the campus on later days as well. The slotting system at IITM does not give equal importance to the profile of the company as it gives to the number of positions any company is willing to take and the packages they are offering.

The best part of the placement season is the harmony between the juniors and seniors who provide a lot of assistance during placements. You will see a frenzy of students helping each other even without knowing each other.

IIT Madras offers the best campus selections with an abundance of good roles and packages.

The Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination (HSEE) is conducted by IIT Madras for admission to their integrated Master of Arts (MA) program. Here are some tips to help you prepare for the exam:

  1. Understand the exam pattern: HSEE exam consists of two parts - Part I and Part II. Part I consists of objective-type questions from English and comprehension skills, analytical and quantitative abilities, and general knowledge and contemporary issues. Part II consists of essay writing on general topics.
  2. Familiarize yourself with the syllabus: It is important to have a good understanding of the HSEE syllabus to know what topics to focus on. The syllabus includes topics from English and comprehension skills, analytical and quantitative abilities, general knowledge and contemporary issues, the Indian economy, society, culture and politics, and environmental ecology and biodiversity.
  3. Improve your English language skills: As the exam is in English, it is important to have a good command of the language. You can improve your language skills by reading books, newspapers, and articles in English, watching English news and movies, and practicing writing in English.
  4. Focus on analytical and quantitative abilities: Practice solving mathematical problems, reasoning questions, and puzzles to improve your analytical and quantitative abilities. You can also take online practice tests to get a better understanding of the exam pattern.
  5. Stay updated with current affairs: Read newspapers and magazines regularly to stay updated with the latest news and events. Make notes of important events and topics and revise them regularly.
  6. Practice essay writing: Part II of the exam requires you to write an essay on a general topic. Practice writing essays on various topics to improve your writing skills and speed.
  7. Mock tests: Taking mock tests will help you get a better understanding of the exam pattern, manage time better, and improve your speed and accuracy.
  8. Revise regularly: It is important to revise regularly to retain what you have learned. Make a revision schedule and stick to it.

What GATE rank is required to get an MS and a PhD in IIT Madras?

RB
Ranjini Banerjee Posted On : March 30th, 2023
Research Scholar at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras

Unlike MTech, admission to MS or Ph.D. is based more on their interview and aptitude test than on GATE score.

  • For some of the master's programs, like MS candidates are shortlisted after a round of technical interviews. IIT Madras prefer students with GATE scores of at least 90 percentile or more.
  • For Ph.D. too, candidates will be considered if they score between 1000-2000. Here, a rank less than 800 is considered excellent and such candidates will be considered for Ph.D. courses through GATE scores.

Thus we can say that the cut-off required for joining MS and Ph.D. programs at IIT Madras, for example, is lesser compared with the cut-off required for admission into the MTech program
