I got 60% in my 12th, 73% in 10th, 97% in graduation, and 99.9 percentile in the CAT. Is there any chance that I can get into IIM Calcutta?

IIM Calcutta considers your 10th and 12th score but not your graduation score.

You have secured below average in class 10th and 12th which makes your CAR score of 99.9 look fake. Chances are you might not get into IIM Calcutta with these academic scores in 10th and 12th. My suggestion is to go for FMS as it does not consider your past academics.

Which one is a better option: an MBA from The University of Melbourne or a PGDM from IIM Calcutta?

AR
Arnav Roy Posted On : September 4th, 2023

It's challenging to determine which is a better option an MBA from the University of Melbourne or a PGDM from IIM Calcutta. There isn’t any exact answer as it depends on a variety of factors, like your career goals, the type of MBA you are interested in, and the specific programs offered by the two schools. Both the University of Melbourne and IIM Calcutta offer excellent MBA programs. However, both programs have their own unique strengths and weaknesses.

  • The University of Melbourne’s MBA program focuses strongly on business analysis and strategy. So if you want to pursue a career in business management or financial planning then this one's for you.
  • The IIM Calcutta PGDM program is more focused on technology management and entrepreneurship. So if you want to pursue a career in technology or business administration then this one is perfect for you.

Ultimately, make sure that the program you choose aligns with your career goals.

What should a 5-pointer at IIT do during his MBA at IIM Calcutta to crack a job at one of the top management consultancies i.e McKinsey Bain BCG Strategy?

IIM C alumni with a summer internship at Accenture Management Consulting

Getting into a consulting firm has less to do with your academic performance and more to do with your overall personality. Of course, being an IIT graduate, regardless of your grade, boosts your resume. If you have multiple consulting shortlists, your chances of getting an interview with a consultancy firm increase dramatically, because each firm is trying to get one up on the other, and one way to do that is to hire someone who others also want on board. It is critical to establish contacts with seniors who have interned at consulting firms and, if possible, with alumni who work there. Make your intentions clear and seek advice on how to improve your resume in order to attract attention.

A well-rounded resume is highly valued by consulting firms. So make sure you include enough points in the "Positions of Responsibility" and "Extra Curricular" sections. Getting into the Drams Cell at IIM Calcutta increases your chances of being shortlisted by a consulting firm significantly. Attempt to become an active member of the top clubs on campus, participate in business competitions, volunteer for social activities, and make up for your undergrad grades in the first term.

What are the RAT sample papers conducted at IIM, Calcutta? Are the research aptitude tests subject or area specific?

PT
Pranjal Tiwari Posted On : December 19th, 2022
Fellow, Indian Institute of Management Calcutta

The FPM admissions process is generally fluid and changes from year to year. When it comes to the RAT exam, you don't need to know anything more than 10th-grade math for the quantitative section.

The questions will be of the puzzle variety, with the level of difficulty increasing as you progress. The questions are relatively simple, and no amount of practice will help because the questions are all different. So the good thing about the quantitative part is that you don't have to do any practice. It will be useless.

In the qualitative section, you will be given a short essay of 3-4 pages to critically analyze. It is optional to practice a few passage-based questions. In most cases, you will be asked to complete either the qualitative or quantitative portion, but not both. Few academic groups will specify whether you must attempt the qualitative or quantitative parts, while others will leave the decision up to the candidates.

How good is the Executive Program In Financial Risk Investment Management EPFRIM at IIM Calcutta?

RA

Any course offered by an institute like IIM Calcutta is guaranteed to be of the highest quality and have significant industry relevance. Instead of this course, it is recommended that you take the CAT and then enroll in the flagship PGDM program at IIM Calcutta. That would be entirely consistent with your desire to work in investment banking.

The recent financial crisis was largely caused by managers' inability to fully comprehend and manage the operational risks of the new generation of derivatives. Future finance managers, it is believed, must be fully equipped with the mathematical and conceptual theories, as well as best practices, that go into the creation and management of such innovative products.
The IIMC faculty combines academic excellence with top management industry experience. IIMC also hires international faculty from top business schools. The IIMC certification and alumni network help participants advance in their careers. The program is only for working professionals, and there will be no campus placement after this course.

What would you prefer from IIM-A, B, C, and XLRI Jamshedpur for management courses?

BG
Bidita Ghose Posted On : May 4th, 2023
Lives in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India

All four are the best, most renowned, highly established business schools in the country. Though to be a part of one of them will be dependent on various factors

Order of choice (highest to lowest)

  • Peer group: All of them give you a network of the sharpest and brightest minds, so all in the same boat.
  • Culture: IIM C, XLRI, IIM B & A tie at the same spot (personal opinion completely).
  • Location: Depends from person to person, so this is a ranking you'll have to do for yourself.
  • Specialization: Depends on what specialization you're looking for. IIM Ahmedabad gives you the best for Consulting, IIM Calcutta for finance.
  • Gut feeling: This is again, very personal, depending on what your dream college was when you started out.
  • Other criteria like packages, internships, fees, etc. won't be a differentiation in these because all of them would give you very similar job profiles, and CTC and have marginally different fees.

Ultimately, the institution that you choose should align with your career goals and aspirations. It's important to research and compare each institution carefully before making a decision.

How many students with 60 in their undergraduate life had successfully made in to IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta?

JJ
Jason Jose Posted On : December 20th, 2022
Studied at Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad

It is unlikely but not impossible. One can get into any IIM, but it is becoming increasingly difficult to break in with lower UG academic scores. When the norms for Admission are established, looking for an unfavorable outcome will not help you in your efforts.

At the same time, there are other IIMs and any other 'A Grade Institution' would suffice. After ten years of work experience, everyone is equal in the corporate world. Your work and accomplishments on the job will be known and recognized. So, get started, get into a good management school, do well, join a company, and slog for the next 8-10 years. You would have caught up with a lot of people.

Even if you are fortunate enough to be admitted to an IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, or Calcutta with a 60% performance, life on campus will be excruciatingly difficult. Survival would be a much bigger challenge in that fiercely competitive environment.

Which new IIM (Udaipur, Ranchi, Raipur, Rohtak, Trichy and Kashipur) has the potential to join the league of ABC in future? Why?

AS
Aditya Shekhar Posted On : January 6th, 2023
MBA from Indian Institute of Management Kashipur (Graduated 2020)

Comparing the new IIMs with the IIM ABC is rather ridiculous and not justified. Considering factors like infrastructure, faculty, and alumni base, the top IIMs are way ahead of the new ones. Even if the new IIMs tackle the infrastructure and faculty issue they can never match the extraordinarily strong alumni base of the older IIMs. The IIMs A, B, and C have given birth to many geniuses that have contributed largely to Indian society in various fields like arts, literature, sports, etc. They have even made impressions globally.

No matter how fast the new IIMs climb up the ladder and excel, they will never be able to match the alumni base and worth of older IIMs.

What kind of roles do Google, and Facebook hire from management institutes like IIM Ahmedabad IIM Bangalore, and IIM Calcutta?

PK
Parneet Kaur Posted On : December 19th, 2022
Studied at IIM Calcutta

Google pays a visit to the campus and offers two positions. It's either Product Management (PM) or Marketing. However, both positions may not be available every year. It is determined by the state of the economy, the requirements, and the campus-Google relationship. The project manager position is more desirable than the marketing position.

This year, it hired from IIM C for positions such as industry manager, account manager, and account strategist. Infosys' international positions are for its client-servicing group. All of these candidates will be based in the United States or London. GE Capital and Baring Private Equity are two other recruiters.
