How are roommates alloted in NIT Surathkal or Warangal?

TD
Tezal Dahiya Posted On : September 16th, 2023

Hostel life is a major part of your college life and the allocation of rooms is important because it decides the kind of people you will be spending time with.

NIT Surathkal

  • First-year students of NIT Surathkal are allotted 1st and 2nd hostel blocks with double occupancy rooms.
  • In the second year, students get to choose a single roommate but the allotment of rooms or wings is random. If you prefer to stay in a single room in the second year you can opt for the 5th block.
  • From the third year till the end of their graduation students will be allotted a single occupancy room in one of the mega towers and they get to choose their wing mates.

NIT Warangal

  • In NIT Warangal, first-year boys are allotted rooms in 1.8k, the ultra mega hostel.
  • The room allotment is usually random but if you want someone specific in your room, you may request the person allocating rooms.
  • For the years you’ll have to book your room online on your portal.

Hope this helps you!

How is IT at NIT Surathkal compared to the CSE department?

DB
Ditsha Banerjee Posted On : September 16th, 2023
Studied at National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal

Information Technology is the newest department of NITK Surathkal so its cutoff is much lower than CSE. However, there aren’t any major differences in the course structure of these two departments.

The CS department courses focus mainly on programming computers using mathematical algorithms while the IT department courses focus on installing internal networks and computer systems and perhaps programming.

In the IT department, you will have to deal with both practical and theoretical problems. Several mini-projects and labs take place every semester and this helps in importing a hands-on experience. CS students too are required to complete many practical projects during their course and are also taught theoretical aspects.

The IT department has newer and less experienced faculties as a result of which students are often clueless about academics. However, the faculties are easily available. CS department faculties on the other hand are highly experienced and offer excellent guidance to their students.

Both CS and IT students receive similar placements and internship opportunities from good companies. Here is a comparative analysis of the placement statistics of these branches

How is metallurgy and material science at NIT Surathkal? How are the placements?

MS
Meghna Singh Posted On : September 16th, 2023
Studied at National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal (2019)

The Metallurgy branch at NITK is quite good. It is not very stressful and the curriculum is rich. You’ll get ample time to participate in co-curricular activities.

Now, let’s talk about the placement prospects. Metallurgy has more jobs in the government sector rather than the private sector. Core companies do visit the NIT Surathkal campus for placements each year. But to get placed in them, you’ll have to be in the top 10 students of your batch. Each Metallurgy batch consists of around 40 students.

For core jobs, maintain a good grip on your subjects. The interviews for these profiles are based on technical rather than soft skills. You can also apply for government companies off campus. The field has little competition in comparison to other branches. With good self preparation, you can get placed in one of the IT companies that visit NITK for placements, and are open to all the branches.

NIT Surathkal is a great college. It will offer you plenty of exposure and opportunities.

Therefore, I would recommend you to join Metallurgy at NITK.

Is the M.Sc (Economics) + B.E. (Hons.) dual-degree from BITS Goa a better option than CSE from NIT Surathkal?

SG
Shubham Ghose Posted On : May 24th, 2021
M.Sc Economics, NIT Surathkal (2019)

I have a friend who completed a dual degree in Economics from BITS Goa and he vouches for the course. Economics in BITS Goa is actually a brilliant department. Also, if you wish to do an MBA in the future an economics degree can prove to be very useful. Apart from this the Economics department also has some brilliant professors and they offer some very good electives like Security Analysis and Portfolio Management and Financial Management.

Now, here are a few cons regarding both colleges.

BITS Goa:

  • Coursework is not easy and the grading is quite harsh. BITS has absolutely NO reservation. Everyone gets in through merit. NITK on the other hand has a 50% reservation. Therefore, competition is quite fierce in BITS.
  • If you screw up your 1st year and you may end up with a branch you don’t like.
  • Although you get 2 degrees in 5 years, you have to work extra hard.
  • The fee is quite high. BITS are not funded and student fees are their only source of income, unlike the NITs which are heavily funded and can afford to charge nominal fees.

NIT Surathkal:

  • Peer quality is much lower than BITS. 50% of the students get in through reservation.
  • While applying abroad for graduate school, BITS definitely has an edge over NIT, and no matter what people say universities abroad don't differentiate among different campuses of BITS.
  • The flexibility offered in the BITS curriculum is far higher than whatever is there in the NIT curriculum.

It often is the case that students of 12th standard are clueless about their field of interest after finishing their studies. Being in a dual program, you get an extra year to decide on your field(subject) of interest

Is the M.Sc (Economics) + B.E. (Hons.) dual-degree from BITS Goa a better option than CSE from NIT Surathkal?

TD

You must first introspect if you really like coding or not. CSE is a trendy branch these days because of the high packages it offers. But those who land a job in top brands are deeply interested in, and an expert of coding. If you are genuinely interested in coding, NIT Surathkal CSE is a great option for you. It’s a good college with a good campus life.

I also pursued my dual degree with an MSc. in Economics from NIT Goa. The Economics department of my college is great. The curriculum is rich, and courses like Econometrics, MSM, Applied Econometrics, etc. are a great help when applying for placements in Analytics firms. Even for an MBA, an Economics degree is very useful. The faculty for Economics is great. MSc. Economics offers less burden than other specializations like Maths or Physics. The course offers very good electives like Security Analysis and Portfolio Management, Financial Management, etc. With a dual degree, you’ll get an extra year to choose your engineering branch.

Now if you opt for a dual degree from BITS Goa, be prepared to work really hard. The crowd is quite competitive. You’ll need to work hard to manage two programs simultaneously. The fees at BITS are quite high in comparison to NITs. NITs won’t provide you top-notch lodging and food facilities like BITS. For higher education too, the BITS tag holds more value. The curriculum at NITs isn’t as flexible as that offered at BITS.

Both are renowned colleges. You should make a choice based on your priorities.

What is the better choice between IIT-B Metallurgy and NIT Surathkal CSE?

AG
Akriti Gupta Posted On : September 16th, 2023
lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

Choosing a branch over a college and vice versa is a big dilemma for many engineering aspirants. I personally feel one should give preference to branch over college because the college stays with you just for 4 years but the branch determines your career. NIT Surathkal CSE is a highly regarded program and recently its infrastructure has been improved to meet industry needs. Here are some core reasons to prefer it over IIT Bombay Metallurgy.

  • NIT Surathkal CSE placements are great with almost 100% placements and an average CTC of around INR 29.47 LPA.
  • The seniors are approachable and friendly so you can look upon them and seek assistance in all matters.
  • The infrastructure has been improved with the construction of a new digital library and another indoor play.
  • NIT Surathkal however does not have an active nightlife. This might both work in favor or against you.
  • There are restrictions on in-timing for first-year students.

Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide if you want to prioritize the branch or the college.

How is the city life of students at NIT Surathkal?

AC
Arindam Chakraborty Posted On : September 15th, 2023
Studied at National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal

NIT Surathkal does not have a very active city life given the fact that it's located around 20 kilometers from Mangalore and about 10 - 15 kilometers from Mulky. The cities closest to Surathkal are Mangalore and Udupi. NITK Surathkal is about 4km from Surathkal town, towards Udupi. Basically, the only city life that students of NITK have is about 20 km away. Its remote location often hinders the students from exploring life outside the campus.

Mangalore however offers an active and diverse city life. There are many fast food places like Chef’s, Cherry Square, Sizzler’s Ranch, Gajalee, Pallkhi, etc., and many ice-cream parlors like Pabbas and Ideals. There also is a Multiplex in Mangalore at Bharath Mall, in Lalbagh. You can also spend time reading in a library in Hampankatta, called Reader’s Delight. The charges are very low.

Overall, there isn't much of a city life that students of NIT Surathkla can enjoy and the options are limited.
