Before I tell you about my brother's experience as a project associate, let me shed some light on who exactly a project associate is and how is he/she selected.
The projects at IITs are funded by external bodies and are usually assigned to a Principal Investigator (PI), who has contributed majorly to the commencement of the collaborated project. This PI is usually a professor of IIT who selects students that he deems suitable to work on that project. Those who are already IITians are given the title of Project Associate. To get selected, one must check the official website for faculty and their research work. Contact the professor whose research work aligns with your interests and give a short interview before the final selection.
As a project associate, my brother was given flexibility in working hours and continuous assistance from the professors. The labs had great computational and experimental resources and made the experience easier than expected. His team had to send annual or binaural reports to the company funding his project as a part of the update. Accommodation and food would be provided by the institute itself with the permission of your professor else you will have to make arrangements outside.
It's important to note that this experience may vary from lab to lab and also your faculty advisor.
One of my friends is an alumnus of IIT Madras and here is his experience on the first day at the institute.
It was back in 2016. My friend was so excited that he reached the college two days before the assigned date. He missed the introduction part on the website of IIT M. On reaching the campus the security at the gate asked him to go to CCW which handles the hostel accommodation. As the undergraduates are supposed to come after two days. He didn’t get his accommodation that day.
He roamed around the campus with his parents and got to meet some students who came for master’s admission. They also got a place to stay for two days. Overall, it was a good experience for him.
Both the system as well as students are at fault here. However, before finger-pointing at the system let’s check what we as students need to change.
Students at IIT Madras with good score are taunted and labeled as rote learners when in reality some of these students are geniuses who constantly raises questions over taught content, tries to come up with innovative methods, and has actual permanent knowledge.
Now, many things need to be improved in the system in general like
The branch change rules at IIT Madras allow students to switch to a different branch of study after completing their first year of undergraduate studies. Here are some important points to note about the branch change rules:
In summary, the branch change rules at IIT Madras allow students to switch to a different branch after their first year, subject to the availability of seats and meeting the institute's eligibility criteria. The selection process is highly competitive, and students must complete the requirements of the new branch to earn their degree.
My sister recently completed her BTech in Chemical Engineering from IIT Madras and being interested in Core only, she shared her experience.
Overall, the chemical engineering program at IIT Madras is considered to be of high quality and is a great choice for students interested in the field.
You should prepare yourself for the overall year that you are going to have. You will come to know about the academic nitty-gritty on your way. The syllabus is definitely vast as the IITs will help you develop yourself more as a person than a student.
You can find the syllabus for the first year on the official website. You will find the syllabus of different branches on their departmental pages. If you have any specific doubts you can reach out to the current students or alumni of the institute. There is an IIT Madras Freshman Forum.
If you are considering pursuing an MS program in India, being sponsored by Texas Instruments (TI) to do it at IIT Madras is a great option to consider. Here are some reasons why:
While an ME program from IISc or IIT from the old five + Roorkee is also a good option, it may not provide the same research experience as an MS program.
Because of the advent of Internet facilities, students tend to skip classes and spend time gaming or involving in other online activities.
Initially, there were no attendance criteria at IIT Madras because there were no distractions like the internet and the attendance rate thus was satisfactory. But with increasing internet facilities, students stay up late gaming and then miss classes. This affected the overall performance of the institute and thus these attendance policies came into the picture.
IIT Madras has a strict attendance policy of 85% which ensures that students are
The Institute despite providing 24/7 Internet facilities expects the students to attend classes regularly and stay aware of the coursework.
IIT Madras is a highly competitive and prestigious institution, and the grading system used by the institute is stringent and based on a relative grading system.
In general, the grading system at IIT Madras is based on a 10-point scale, where grades are given in letter grades ranging from A to F, with A being the highest grade and F being the lowest. Additionally, IIT Madras uses a relative grading system, where the grades of students are evaluated based on the performance of the entire class.
It is important to note that grades in IIT Madras are not the sole indicator of academic performance. The institute places a lot of emphasis on research and innovation, and students are expected to excel in their respective fields of study. Additionally, students at IIT Madras are encouraged to participate in various extracurricular activities, such as sports, cultural events, and technical competitions, which provide a well-rounded education and contribute to their overall development.
Overall, while the average grade in IIT Madras may vary depending on the course and academic year, it is important to focus on learning and acquiring skills and knowledge that will help you succeed in your career, rather than just the grades you receive.
