IIT Madras is a highly competitive and prestigious institution, and the grading system used by the institute is stringent and based on a relative grading system.

In general, the grading system at IIT Madras is based on a 10-point scale, where grades are given in letter grades ranging from A to F, with A being the highest grade and F being the lowest. Additionally, IIT Madras uses a relative grading system, where the grades of students are evaluated based on the performance of the entire class.

It is important to note that grades in IIT Madras are not the sole indicator of academic performance. The institute places a lot of emphasis on research and innovation, and students are expected to excel in their respective fields of study. Additionally, students at IIT Madras are encouraged to participate in various extracurricular activities, such as sports, cultural events, and technical competitions, which provide a well-rounded education and contribute to their overall development.

Overall, while the average grade in IIT Madras may vary depending on the course and academic year, it is important to focus on learning and acquiring skills and knowledge that will help you succeed in your career, rather than just the grades you receive.

Studied EE at IIT Madras (2019)

The faculty of IIT Madras usually tries to follow the relative grading scheme, wherein the grades S, A, B, C, D, E are equally distributed amongst a particular class, based on the marks they have obtained.

Particularly, the grades depend partly on the student’s capability, the class strength, the marking scheme, and also the difficulty of a specific paper. The reasons can be more than these few.

If the strength of the class is small, then the grading scheme certainly and only depends on the professor because RG might not be as effective. RG is to ensure that more than at least 80% remain satisfied with what they have obtained.

It is difficult to measure the average. However, since it is RG, the average could be anticipated to be around C or B for a respective large class, while it might be B or A for a small one.
