What was your experience as a project associate at IIT Madras?

AB
Aditi Banerjee Posted On : March 28th, 2023
Lives in Bangalore

Before I tell you about my brother's experience as a project associate, let me shed some light on who exactly a project associate is and how is he/she selected.

The projects at IITs are funded by external bodies and are usually assigned to a Principal Investigator (PI), who has contributed majorly to the commencement of the collaborated project. This PI is usually a professor of IIT who selects students that he deems suitable to work on that project. Those who are already IITians are given the title of Project Associate. To get selected, one must check the official website for faculty and their research work. Contact the professor whose research work aligns with your interests and give a short interview before the final selection.

As a project associate, my brother was given flexibility in working hours and continuous assistance from the professors. The labs had great computational and experimental resources and made the experience easier than expected. His team had to send annual or binaural reports to the company funding his project as a part of the update. Accommodation and food would be provided by the institute itself with the permission of your professor else you will have to make arrangements outside.

It's important to note that this experience may vary from lab to lab and also your faculty advisor.

How was your first day in IIT Madras?

AS
Abhijeet Sukla Posted On : July 30th, 2021

One of my friends is an alumnus of IIT Madras and here is his experience on the first day at the institute.

It was back in 2016. My friend was so excited that he reached the college two days before the assigned date. He missed the introduction part on the website of IIT M. On reaching the campus the security at the gate asked him to go to CCW which handles the hostel accommodation. As the undergraduates are supposed to come after two days. He didn’t get his accommodation that day.

He roamed around the campus with his parents and got to meet some students who came for master’s admission. They also got a place to stay for two days. Overall, it was a good experience for him.

What can be improved or changed for the better at IIT Madras?

AG
Aditi Goswami Posted On : March 30th, 2023
studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (2018)

Both the system as well as students are at fault here. However, before finger-pointing at the system let’s check what we as students need to change.

Students at IIT Madras with good score are taunted and labeled as rote learners when in reality some of these students are geniuses who constantly raises questions over taught content, tries to come up with innovative methods, and has actual permanent knowledge.

Now, many things need to be improved in the system in general like

  • Industrial visits: The promised visits to the industries are never made and thus there is a considerable lack of exposure.
  • Workshops and Labs: Workshops and Labs have obsolete equipment of substandard quality. There is a need to make the lab sessions more interesting by providing better lab equipment and conductive kinky sessions.
  • Food Quality: Bad quality food hinders the thinking capabilities of the students. The Food Service Routine should be like an Interrupt Service Routine in the priority program of the human mind at IIT.
  • Professors: While some professors are great and experienced, some just come and speak bookish gibberish leaving no space for dynamic discussions or doubt-clearing sessions.

What are the branch change rules at IIT Madras?

SB
Santanu Banerjee Posted On : March 29th, 2023
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (2019)

The branch change rules at IIT Madras allow students to switch to a different branch of study after completing their first year of undergraduate studies. Here are some important points to note about the branch change rules:

  • The branch change process at IIT Madras is highly competitive and subject to the availability of seats in the desired branch. The number of seats available for branch change is limited, and the selection is based on academic performance and other criteria set by the institute.
  • Students who wish to apply for branch change must meet the eligibility criteria set by the institute, which includes minimum academic performance standards and other requirements.
  • The branch change application process typically takes place in the second semester of the first year, and students are required to fill out an application form and submit it to the institute's academic section.
  • The institute may conduct tests, interviews, or other selection procedures to assess the student's suitability for the desired branch.
  • Once a student is selected for branch change, they must complete the required coursework and other requirements of the new branch to earn their degree.
  • It's important to note that not all branches are open for branch change, and some branches may have additional eligibility criteria or restrictions on branch change.

In summary, the branch change rules at IIT Madras allow students to switch to a different branch after their first year, subject to the availability of seats and meeting the institute's eligibility criteria. The selection process is highly competitive, and students must complete the requirements of the new branch to earn their degree.

How is chemical engineering at IIT Madras?

SD
Shweta Das Posted On : March 28th, 2023
Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (2019)

My sister recently completed her BTech in Chemical Engineering from IIT Madras and being interested in Core only, she shared her experience.

  • Curriculum: The courses under Chemical Engineering usually are Transport Phenomena (Mass, Heat & Momentum Transfer), Reaction Engineering, Process Control & Economics. Most of these courses covered obsolete ideas and idealistic scenarios that were hardly industry relevant.
  • Professors: The best professors teaching core courses are Prof. Shankar, Raghu, and Niket which one gets by luck only. The best professors teaching electives are Prof. Tangirala, Pushpavanam, and Shankar Narasimhan who teach a lot of high-tech stuff.
  • Job prospects: A BTech graduate in Chemical Engineering can expect roles such as Process Engineer in companies like Shell, or a Field Engineer at Schlumberger. Honestly, a UG has fewer opportunities in India and only a higher degree in Chemical Engineering can open better opportunities for you such as R&D roles in companies like HUL, ITC, and Shell.
  • Research: This branch is well known for its research culture both Computational and Experimental. Computational research is conducted in fields like process modeling, signals, multivariate data analytics, and process optimization, whereas experimental research at Chemical Engineering Laboratory and Combustion Research Centre is conducted in pyrolysis, catalysis, nanotechnology, fluidized beds & columns, etc.
  • Miscellaneous: Chemical Engineering students have a lot of free time on their hands which helps them focus on hobbies, side projects, passions, and non-core interests. They are also free from strenuous lab sessions and assignment deadlines.

Overall, the chemical engineering program at IIT Madras is considered to be of high quality and is a great choice for students interested in the field.

What is the syllabus for first semester B.Tech in IIT Madras?

Harpreet Saini Posted On : August 3rd, 2021
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras

You should prepare yourself for the overall year that you are going to have. You will come to know about the academic nitty-gritty on your way. The syllabus is definitely vast as the IITs will help you develop yourself more as a person than a student.

You can find the syllabus for the first year on the official website. You will find the syllabus of different branches on their departmental pages. If you have any specific doubts you can reach out to the current students or alumni of the institute. There is an IIT Madras Freshman Forum.

How does the TI sponsored MS program at IIT Madras stand out against the M.Tech courses at various IITs?

TB
Tushar Banerjee Posted On : March 29th, 2023
studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras

If you are considering pursuing an MS program in India, being sponsored by Texas Instruments (TI) to do it at IIT Madras is a great option to consider. Here are some reasons why:

  • Salary and bond period: If you are sponsored by TI, you may receive a salary or a part of it during your studies. However, it's important to note that there may be a bond period involved, which means that you will have to work for TI for a certain period after completing your degree.
  • Three-year program: The MS program at IIT Madras typically takes three years to complete, which is longer than the usual two-year program for an M.Tech degree. However, the additional year will allow you to do more in-depth research, which can be helpful if you plan to pursue a Ph.D. later on.
  • Research opportunity: The MS program at IIT Madras will require you to conduct extensive research, which will give you valuable experience and skills that can be beneficial for your future career.
  • Guidance from IIT and TI: You will receive guidance from both IIT Madras and TI during your MS program. You will be assigned a guide from IIT Madras, and you may also require guidance from TI, although the rules for this may vary.
  • Option for an extension to Ph.D.: The MS program at IIT Madras can be extended to a Ph.D. program if you decide to continue your studies. This option can be advantageous if you are interested in pursuing a career in research or academia.

While an ME program from IISc or IIT from the old five + Roorkee is also a good option, it may not provide the same research experience as an MS program.

Why does IIT Madras have 85% attendance criteria?

TB
Tithi Banerjee Posted On : March 28th, 2023
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (2021)

Because of the advent of Internet facilities, students tend to skip classes and spend time gaming or involving in other online activities.

Initially, there were no attendance criteria at IIT Madras because there were no distractions like the internet and the attendance rate thus was satisfactory. But with increasing internet facilities, students stay up late gaming and then miss classes. This affected the overall performance of the institute and thus these attendance policies came into the picture.

IIT Madras has a strict attendance policy of 85% which ensures that students are

  • Regularly attending classes and staying on track with their coursework.
  • Fully engaged with their studies and are taking advantage of the educational opportunities provided by the university.
  • Prepared for the future and to have a competitive edge in the job market
  • Able to keep up with the pace of classes and not fall behind.

The Institute despite providing 24/7 Internet facilities expects the students to attend classes regularly and stay aware of the coursework.
