Which is better: An integrated five years course into DM neurology (NIMHANS) or completing my MD in general medicine and then specializing in DM neurology?

BG
Bidita Ghose Posted On : September 30th, 2023

In my opinion, it’s best to complete an MD in medicine first rather than pursuing DM Neuro directly after MBBS.

It is so because M.B.B.S. students receive minimal clinical exposure and therefore their interest in a particular field might not be genuine. They might later regret their choice.

An integrated program is a 5-year program that requires a lot of commitment. So, if you go for a field you are not interested in, you will be wasting 5 years of your life. Even if you are sure of your interest in neurology, you may not actually like it when you start working. That being said, it's better that you do MD in medicine, have first-hand exposure to all the specialties, and then choose one for you.

People often choose integrated courses so as to save one year of education. However, they fail to recognize the risks involved.

Ultimately, unless you love neurology passionately and have enough exposure in the same, go for direct DM, else completing MD would be the safest bet.

I got admission (PGDM) opportunities from IIM Rohtak and IIM Udaipur! Should one go or sit for CAT again this year? Any suggestions?

SU
Sidhant Unnithan Posted On : January 10th, 2023
I. P. M from Indian Institute of Management Rohtak (Expected 2024)

Sitting for CAT again is honestly not a very easy decision. So I will suggest you go for IIM Rohtak itself. This decision will be beneficial under the following circumstances

  • If your past academic performance is not really good. This is because the older IIMs lay emphasis on past academics too much which in reality cannot be changed. So why risk a year when the chances are nearly zero?
  • If you already have 2 or more years of experience, it’s better you don’t forgo the opportunity.
  • If you are interested in domains like Finance or Marketing, it’s better to join now. This is because working too much in the IT field limits your chances of getting into Finance and Marketing.

So based on these points you can come up with a decision that’s best for you. Just remember that despite being new, IIM Rohtak belongs to the IIM family which in itself is a brand.

Do you know anyone who got into a top b-school (IIMs, XLRI, JBIMS, NM, IIFT, FMS etc.) with average UG percentage?

AM
Ashish Metkar Posted On : February 20th, 2023
MBA from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (Graduated 2011)

Yes, I do know a friend who managed to get calls from many top B Schools despite having an average Undergraduate Score. Her profile looked like this

  • 10th- 76%
  • 12th- 68%
  • UG- 64%

Although her marks witnessed a gradual decline, she was lucky enough to study at XLRI. Past academics are considered as one but not the major factors at XLRI, unlike IIMs that focus a lot on past academics. A good XAT and GD-PI score can compensate for your poor academic record at XLRI, FMS, and JBIMS. NITIE is a top B School that does not consider past academics at all. My friend with her average profile managed to convert NITIE, XIMB, and all the IIMs except for the top ones obviously. So we can safely assume that admission into these top B Schools is possible even with an average profile provided that you score excellently in the CAT or XAT and the GDPI round.

What are the criteria to get admission into IIM Ahmedabad?

Sayantani Barman Posted On : October 6th, 2023

IIM Ahmedabad's admission process is carried out into three stages:

  1. CAT Score Shortlisting: In the initial stage, candidates are shortlisted based on their CAT (Common Admission Test) scores. To increase your chances, a CAT score of around 99+ is recommended.
  2. WAT-PI Shortlisting: In the second stage, students who have applied for the Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI) process are shortlisted. This selection is based on a combination of factors, including past academic performance and CAT scores.
  3. Final Selection Parameters: After the WAT-PI round, a composite score is calculated to determine the final selection. For the final selection, 10% weightage will be given to the AWT, 40% weightage to PI, and 50% weightage to the composite score. Where, Composite Score = Application Rating Score + Normalized CAT score.

And, Application Rating score is based on class 10th, 12th and bachelor exams, and work experience scores. Rather than that several parameters are considered, including:

  • CAT Score
  • Graduation Score
  • 10th Grade Score
  • 12th Grade Score
  • Performance in WAT/GD-PI
  • Academic Diversity
  • Gender Diversity
  • Work Experience (if applicable)

It's important to note that a consistently good academic record, along with a high CAT score, plays a significant role in securing a spot at IIM Ahmedabad. Additionally, the institution values diversity and considers gender diversity and academic diversity as part of the selection process.

On what basis do you get admission in IIIT Hyderabad?

JR
Jyotshna Ranjan Posted On : February 14th, 2024

To get admission into regular B.Tech at IIIT Hyderabad, you need to score minimum 250 marks in JEE Mains. You also need a good percentage in 12th boards, and more than 85 marks in Physics, Chemistry and Maths. The subject-wise cutoff is usually 85 or more for all the three. As for dual degree admissions, you need to clear UGEE and a subsequent interview. Make sure to check the 12th marks requirement for the same, if any. The college also intakes a limited number of dual degree students through lateral admissions.

IIIT Hyderabad does not offer any reservation, and it is quite difficult to get into.
