IIM Ahmedabad's admission process is carried out into three stages:

  1. CAT Score Shortlisting: In the initial stage, candidates are shortlisted based on their CAT (Common Admission Test) scores. To increase your chances, a CAT score of around 99+ is recommended.
  2. WAT-PI Shortlisting: In the second stage, students who have applied for the Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI) process are shortlisted. This selection is based on a combination of factors, including past academic performance and CAT scores.
  3. Final Selection Parameters: After the WAT-PI round, a composite score is calculated to determine the final selection. For the final selection, 10% weightage will be given to the AWT, 40% weightage to PI, and 50% weightage to the composite score. Where, Composite Score = Application Rating Score + Normalized CAT score.

And, Application Rating score is based on class 10th, 12th and bachelor exams, and work experience scores. Rather than that several parameters are considered, including:

  • CAT Score
  • Graduation Score
  • 10th Grade Score
  • 12th Grade Score
  • Performance in WAT/GD-PI
  • Academic Diversity
  • Gender Diversity
  • Work Experience (if applicable)

It's important to note that a consistently good academic record, along with a high CAT score, plays a significant role in securing a spot at IIM Ahmedabad. Additionally, the institution values diversity and considers gender diversity and academic diversity as part of the selection process.

IIM Ahmedabad can be divided into three stages. First students are shortlisted based on their CAT scores. In the second stage, students who have applied for the WAT-PI process are shortlisted based on their past academics and CAT score. After the WAT-PI round, the composite score of each student is calculated for final selection. The parameters considered for final selection are as follows.

  • CAT score
  • Graduation score
  • 10th score
  • 12th score
  • WAT/GD-PI
  • Academic diversity
  • Gender diversity
  • Work Experience

You need to have a consistently good academic record and a CAT score of around 99+, should get you a shortlist from IIM Ahmedabad.

IIM-A evaluates one's overall record and not just the CAT score for admission. The first shortlist is prepared using the sectional cut-offs which fluctuate every year according to the competition. After this, three more stages complete the full admission procedure explained below.

Evaluation Process:

At this stage, each shortlisted student’s Application Rating Score is prepared. It encompasses four parameters with a set point against each bracket of percentage obtained/work experience. The four parameters are: 10th Percentage, 12th Percentage, Graduation Marks, and Work Experience.

For points against graduation percentage, students are divided into six Academic Categories in accordance with their educational background. As the marking across courses are drastically different, it becomes imperative to normalize the score. For example, a student getting 68% in a B.Tech course would be given 5 points while the same percentage in Humanities would yield 8 points.

Shortlisting Process:

Stage 1: For Exceptional Achievers

The division now weighs each applicant according to their Composite Score (CS), calculated as below. Those at the top in each Academic Category are shortlisted on priority basis.

Composite Score (CS)

(0.35 × Normalised AR score) + (0.65 × Normalised overall score in CAT)

Stage 2: General Shortlisting

Rest of the candidates are now shortlisted according to their Composite Score. This list fills the remaining spots after Stage 1 shortlisting in accordance with reservations and categories.

Final Selection Process:

This stage comes after the Answer Writing Test (AWT) and Personal Interview (PI). With the below-given procedure, Final Composite Score (FCS), is calculated and the seats are allocated using the score.

Final Composite Score

(0.50 × Normalised PI Score) + (0.10 × Normalised AWT Scorecard) + (0.25 × Normalised CAT Score) + (0.15 × AR)

(This is just a crisp version of admission criteria for IIMA, aspirants are advised to go through the official website for more information.)
