Life for a freshman at IIT Roorkee can be quite challenging as the academic workload is quite demanding. However, students are also provided with numerous opportunities to get involved in extracurricular activities and clubs, which can help to balance out their experiences.

  • Academics: The academic workload at IIT Roorkee for first-year students is quite a bit to handle initially. You will have too many subjects, labs, assignments, and classes. However, this might actually help the students to prepare themselves for the upcoming years and maintain a good CG right from the start. The semesters are further shortened with only one minor exam throughout the semester.
  • Hostel: Every first-year student is assigned the Rajendra Bhavan which is exclusively for freshmen. This Bhavan will become your home away from home and you will make a family away from home. This is the most well-kept hostel of IIT Roorkee and every freshman starts creating memories from scratch here.
  • Extracurricular: IIT Roorkee balances the academic workload well with extracurricular activities to break the monotony. There is so much to explore from Photography and Arts to Writing for the magazine, designing, and the Himalayan Explorers Club. One can find some or other thing that matches their passion. The first year is the best time to become a part of a club or group.
  • Food: The food served is decent but after a while, you might stop liking the taste. Students are advised to choose their Mess Secretary wisely who will handle the food-related issues better. You can also eat outside at many places such as Prakash, Dynasty, Sagar, Dominos, CCD, and Baskin Robbins.
  • Internet: First-year students can avail the 24/7 smooth network facilities available throughout the campus and even in their hostel.
  • Explore: Owing to its location, you can find many tourist spots to hang out during weekends and break the stress off. Some of the most visited places are Mussoorie, Rishikesh, Simla, Narkanda, Manali, Auli, Leh-Ladakh, and Dharamshala.

Overall, IIT Roorkee is a great place to study and grow as an individual. You discover so many things inside you as well as outside. You will meet new people with a variety of opinions. All you need to do is take every step wisely and make the most out of your first year.

The placement scenario of Geophysical Technology (GPT) at IIT Roorkee can be broadly discuses under core and noncore placements

Core

  • Owing to a small batch size in comparison to other branches, the overall average is higher.
  • The range of packages offered by the recruiting companies is also wide.
  • The highest core recruiter is Schlumberger which offers packages around INR 32 LPA to 3-4 students every year.
  • Other Oil giants include ONGC and IOCL which offer packages in the range of 10–11 LPA.

Non core

Non core jobs are in plenty not only for GPT students but students of all other branches as well. The sectors in which these jobs are offered include

  • Consultancy
  • Management Trainee
  • Operations
  • Business Analyst/ Data Analyst
  • Marketing
  • Teaching sector
  • Data Scientist
  • Coding

Most of these jobs can be secured with good aptitude skills while coding and Data Scientist specifically require programming skills.

What should I do to become a great data scientist if I am currently an engineering student at IIT Roorkee and an intern at Nucleus Software, and I want to work with a firm like Google or Facebook?

The primary step to become an excellent Data Scientist is to become proficient in some programming languages. Some of them have been listed below

  • C
  • Data Structure & Algorithm
  • Python
  • Java
  • SQL

Having a basic knowledge of these languages is not sufficient. One needs to become proficient in data structure and algorithms to kick-start a career as a Data Scientist. Apart from programming, you will also have to broaden your knowledge base related to Math and cover topics like Discrete Mathematics, Linear Algebra, Statistics

IT giants like Microsoft and Google don’t just offer jobs to anybody. Here are a few guidelines to secure a core data science job

  1. The primary step, as I said, is to become proficient in programming languages. You can begin with the easiest, Python. Next, you can target R which is also open-source.
  2. Next, you need to try your hands on SQL which will require lots of experiments with data.
  3. Statistics and probability are considered the soul of DS and it’s very crucial to become proficient in them. You can learn it from MIT courses.
  4. ML or Machine Learning is also an indispensable part of DS and one requires enough Mathematical knowledge to learn this.
  5. You should also learn Natural Language Processing
  6. Try to complete dummy projects available on the internet. One such project is The Home of Data Science.

Anyone who follows these guidelines will reap the maximum benefits and become a successful data scientist for sure.

Which is better IIT Delhi EE or IIT Roorkee ECE?

AG
Ashish Gupta Posted On : April 10th, 2023
Lives in Roorkee, Uttarakhand, India

Although many might not agree, I think ECE is much better than electrical engineering. People tend to choose IID mainly because of the brand name that comes attached to it. If the tag was to be negated, then by all terms IIT Roorkee is better than IIT Delhi’s Electrical Engineering.

Moreover, I feel Electrical has too much workload both in IIT Delhi as well as Roorkee. This does not save you time for extracurricular activities.

Delhi is one of the most polluted cities in India and does affect the overall educational experience of the students. Although my personal suggestion is to opt for IIT Roorkee ECE, it’s better to talk to students from both institutes and branches.

In order to get 10 transcripts, you will have to provide 10 university names. For this,

  • The cost of 10 transcripts would be approximately INR 1500.
  • Pay the application fee to the Finance and Account Section and get a receipt for the Transcripts.
  • Write an application to the Assistant Registrar asking him to issue a transcript on an A4 size sheet. Include the name of the 10 universities and your personal details.
  • Mention the address you want the transcript to be delivered to
  • Print out one copy of each of your mark sheets.
  • Finally print the application along with copies of the mark sheet and receipts from the Account and Finance Section to the UG section.

You can personally visit and receive the transcripts or wait for them to be delivered to the address.

Which is better for biotechnology: IIT Guwahati or IIT Roorkee?

TA
Tithi Aggrawal Posted On : May 5th, 2023
Lives in New Delhi

In my opinion, IIT Roorkee is a better option for Engineering in Biotechnology. This department was established in 2002 and is a subdomain of Chemical Engineering. Over the past few years, it has grown by leaps and bounds in every aspect. It has excellent connections with good pharma companies. IDPL, Rishikesh is very close to Roorkee. Additionally, Delhi and the NCR cities like Gurgaon, Noida, and Faridabad which are home to many pharma companies are in close proximity to the Institute. The placement scenario of Biotechnology at IIT Roorkee has been decent till now. The faculty is very approachable and helps you secure internships.

What are the fundamentals of the counselling for admission for an MTech in IIT Roorkee (as they send call letters a to lot more students than are required?

RS
Raghavendra Sachdeva Posted On : April 14th, 2023

Most branches conduct direct counseling without any official written test or interview.

  • Every department is assigned a fixed time slot for counseling and you have to attend the counseling of the department you have applied for.
  • Candidates are summoned on the basis of their GATE score/rank
  • First, students belonging to the SC/ST/OBC category are counseled. Those with a good rank are eligible to sit in General Category.
  • Once the reserved category counseling has been wrapped, GC students are called.
  • Anyone who is unable to get a seat can fill out a form for waitlisted candidates to be eligible for further rounds. Submit your DD along with it.
  • Any vacancy will be filled with the first candidate on the waitlist on the basis of rank. Two rounds will be conducted similarly.
  • Lastly, the Spot round is held in July to fill the remaining vacancies.

Here are a few points of caution one should consider regarding counseling

  • Your branch preference cannot be altered once you have filled out the application form. For instance, if you chose VLSI>Communication and then want to opt for Communication despite getting a seat in VLSI, it won’t be possible.
  • Assemble all necessary documents including DD and photographs in case you get a seat.

It’s important to note that not all students summoned for counseling get a seat.

Is it possible for an IIT Roorkee metallurgy student to change branch to mechanical?

SG
Shruti Gupta Posted On : April 14th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (2020)

Yes, It certainly is possible for an IIT Roorkee metallurgy student to change his branch to Mechanical.

In fact, based on recent stats, the metallurgy branch has the highest number of students opting for a branch change around 16 students out of 36 branch changers. Yet, I would like to bring to light the fact that IIT Roorkee has a bit of a complex branch change policy in comparison to other IITs.

  • The availability of seats for branch change intake is low around 2-3 only. This also includes seats for the reserved categories.
  • The CGPA required for branch change is very high due to less availability of seats. To get a branch change into CSE, one needs around 10 CGPA, for Electrical and ECE, one needs 9.7+ while other branches require around 9.4+ CGPA.
  • Lastly, branch change in IIT Roorkee takes place right after the first semester giving you less time to excel in adjusting alongside adjusting to your new life. You don’t have a second chance to score better in the second semester to compensate for the low marks in the first.

Although branch change at IIT Roorkee might seem difficult, with the right mindset and determination one can surely get into his preferred branch.

How many students are able to change their branch in IIT Roorkee?

RS
Raghavendra Sachdeva Posted On : April 14th, 2023
studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee

Around 2-3 seats are available in every branch at IIT Roorkee for branch change. One seat is saved for the reserved category. Here are a few reasons why branch change is a tedious task in IIT Roorkee

  • You are required to change your branch right after the first semester giving you less time to prepare for your exams. You will also have no chance to score better in the second semester.
  • All the semester exams are purely theoretical which is a bit difficult for students to cope with
  • IIT Roorkee branch change requires a higher CGPA because of fewer seats available. For CS 10, for ECE and Electrical 9.7, and for others 9.4 at least. Such high CGPA results in tough competition among peers

The point is, change your branch only if extremely necessary because one, you will have to commute yourself to the fullest and second every branch has its own scope so it’s better to explore than make a hasty decision.
