West Bengal Government Approves 606 New PG Medical Seats in State Colleges

New Delhi: As per the latest updates, the Central Government of West Bengal has approved the addition of 606 postgraduate medical sets in newly constructed state colleges for the upcoming academic session 2023-24.

As per the Central government, the new PG medical seats will be offered to interested candidates at Diamond Harbour Medical College, Rampurhat Medical College, Deben Mahato Government Medical College, Raiganj Medical College and Cooch Behar Medical College.

Each newly constructed medical college in West Bengal will offer 82 admission seats for postgraduate medical courses. The approval is given after considering the necessary requirements and facilities offered by these colleges to provide medical courses.

With this addition, there is an increase of 31% in postgraduate medical seats in West Bengal. Currently, the state offers a total of 1940 PG or MD/MS seats to eligible candidates. The new PG seats will cover about 20 speciality subjects.

Talking about this initiative, Sajal Biswas, Physician at Medical Service Centre said, "With an additional 606 seats, Bengal will be able to produce more specialist doctors. But there is the need to enhance manpower like teaching faculty and infrastructure so that the quality is not compromised”.

Earlier, the step to increase medical admission seats in state colleges was first taken by the West Bengal Government in 2022. The Director of Medical Education (DME), West Bengal directed the new colleges to submit the documents required to grant the approval.

In addition to this, the government has also decided to increase the admission seats for PG medical courses in existing colleges. As of now, the number of government medical colleges in West Bengal is 23, which trains over 5000 MBSS students every year in various streams.

Following the approval, a total of 82 PG admission seats have been added to Malda Medical College, 66 seats to Cooch Behar Medical College and 48 seats added to the College of Medicine and Sagore Dutta Hospital in West Bengal.

Pradip Mitra, Former Director of Medical Education (DME) said, "there is a dearth of doctors in both MBBS and specialists in the state like anywhere in the country. The move to increase the number of PG seats will definitely enhance the number of specialist doctors".
