IIT Council Proposes to Launch 4-Year B.Ed

New Delhi: edit The Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) may soon introduce a four-year integrated B.Ed. programmes after discussing a proposal for them at the council meeting on April 18, 2023.

The meeting's other highlights includes the discussions on student welfare and required actions that must be taken to stop student suicides at prestigious technical schools.

Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan presided over the IIT council meeting, which was conducted after a gap of two years. The 55th meeting of the council was held in IIT Bhubaneswar, and the attendees included senior representatives from the Ministry of Education, University Grants Commission (UGC), All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) & IIT directors and chairpersons of governing bodies.

The proposal for a four-year B.Ed, the Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) in IITs was discussed by the Council. According to a news article, the minister emphasised that IITs may be torch bearers for fostering quality upgradation in instructors.

ITEP is a four-year undergraduate dual-major programme that offers the BA Bed/Bsc Bed and Bcom BEd degrees. The goal of this course is to get teachers ready for the Foundational, Preparatory, Middle, and Secondary phases of the new school system (5 3 3 4). It is currently available at teachers educational Institutions.However, the council is now suggesting that IITs should implement the same.

During the meeting, The minister requested a full report from the Council about student dropout factors. Additionally, the suicide prevention was also covered. Two cases from IIT Madras and one from IIT Bombay were published in March, which refocused attention on students' mental health.

IIT Gandhinagar discussed potential sociological, psychological, and other health factors that may be responsible for student’s depression.

According to the press release, the Council "emphasised the necessity for a strong grievance redressal system, increased psychological counselling services, decreased pressure, and highlighted the importance of lowering students' fear of failure or rejection.

Recently, IIM Bodh Gaya organised a two-day long Management Development Program (MDP) on 'Professional Etiquettes' for officials of Indian Oil Corporation from April 28 to April 29, 2023. The first batch was held on April 28, 2023 for 21 officers from different divisions.
