New Delhi: Three National Fellowship Schemes now fall within the purview of their respective ministries thanks to a transfer of authority from the University Grants Commission (UGC). According to the statement, as of October 1, 2022, the programmes will be implemented directly by the relevant ministries.

Implementing the National Fellowship for OBC, National Fellowship for SC, and Maulana Azad National Fellowship was under the purview of the UGC. The ministry of social justice and empowerment oversees the National Fellowships for Scheduled Caste and Other Backward Communities. while the Ministry of Minority Affairs is responsible for the Maulana Azad National Fellowship.
"It is made known to all parties involved that UGC only adopted these plans up to September 30, 2022. Beginning on October 1, 2022, the involved ministries will carry out the initiatives on their own, according to the UGC notice.
National Fellowship for SC
A central sector programme called the National Fellowship Scheme for SC Students was established during the fiscal year 2005–2006 to give possibilities for pursuing higher education leading to MPhil and PhD degrees in the fields of science, humanities, and social science.
The programme offers SC students 2,000 new fellowships per year, 1,500 junior research fellowships (JRF) for the humanities and 500 JRF for the sciences.
National Fellowship for OBC
The National Fellowship for Other Backward Classes (OBC) is a programme available to OBC candidates who are pursuing advanced degrees, including as full-time, regular MPhil and PhD programmes in the humanities, social sciences, engineering, and technology.
Every year, the programme grants 300 fellowships across all areas after taking into account applications submitted online by OBC-identifying research scientists. Additionally, 3% of the available seats must be reserved for PwDs who fall under the OBC group while considering awards of fellowships to research scholars.
Maulana Azad Fellowship Scheme
The Maulana Azad Fellowship Scheme (MANF) aims to offer five-year fellowships in the form of financial aid to students from six registered minority communities, including Buddhist, Christian, Jain, Muslim, Parsi, and Sikh. The programme applies to all universities that the UGC has approved.
