UGC Permits 3 More Universities to Offer Online Degree Programs from July 2022 Session

With this approval, the Maharishi Markandeshwar deemed-to-be-university, Haryana, University of Mumbai, Maharashtra, and Chandigarh University, Punjab has now been added to the list of UGC's approved universities entitled to start online programs without prior approval.

As per UGC, the Maharishi Markandeshwar will offer a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), Bachelor of Commerce Honors (BCom Hons), and Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) program in online mode from the academic session 2022-23.

On the other hand, the University of Mumbai will offer MA in sociology, and Chandigarh University will offer MA in Economics, MA English and MSc in mathematics programs in online mode from the July 2022 session onwards.

Informing about the responsibilities of the university, the UGC officially stated that "The HEI shall abide by the conditions such as the number of seats, recognition period, etc. mentioned in the relevant Regulatory Authority letter".

Approved universities are entitled to follow the guidelines released by UGC for offering online programs. The programs are only to be offered by the university itself and not under any franchise arrangement, the officials further added.

The Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) can offer the online programs till they meet the NAAC or NIRF ranking requirements as per the UGC regulations. In case universities fail to meet the criteria then they will be forced to discontinue the online courses, said a statement from UGC.

Earlier in 2021, the UGC approved 4 universities to offer online degree programs. These institutes include Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences and Bharathiar University from Tamil Nadu state, Kuvempu University, and the University of Mysore.

For the session 2021-22, the commission has approved more than 38 universities to start online programs. In the list, there are about 13 State Universities, 15 Deemed-to-be Universities, 3 Central Universities, and 3 private universities.

Talking about the regulations, Union Grants Commission said in an earlier statement "The universities can offer these programs as long as they comply with the NAAC or NIRF ranking requirements as per UGC regulations, and if not, they can discontinue the programs and inform the UGC accordingly"

“Each HEI was required to submit an affidavit for ensuring compliance to all the provisions of the University Grants Commission (Open and Distance Learning Programmes and Online Programmes) Regulations, 2020,” the UGC statement said.
