New Delhi: UGC has declared that all undergraduate students in recognised Indian universities will be required to do an eight to ten weeks research internship. According to the recently announced guidelines, these internship programmes are primarily aimed at improving students' employability and helping them improve their research skills.

The guidelines from UGC read, “The integration of Research, Innovation and Technology Development is the foundation of Atma-Nirbhar Bharat (Self-reliant India). An institutionalisation of Research Internship at Undergraduate Levels is expected to play a pivotal role in catalysing interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary/transdisciplinary and translational research culture embedded in NEP 2020”.
According to the notice issued, students will be assigned to a research supervisor, preferably from another HEI, but it might be from the same organisation. The students will have to work under the research supervisor for a certain period of time at the supervisor's research facility and will complete a time-bound internship assignment.
Those participating in a research internship will receive hands-on training in research tools, procedures, methodologies, and equipment, as well as learn about other elements of doing high-quality research.
Internships’ Credit System and Evaluation
An internship of eight to ten weeks for ten credits will be required for students who want to qualify with a certificate or diploma after the second or fourth semester. Students will be required to complete 450 hours of internship. 1 credit for a research internship entails a minimum of 45 hours of internship activities every week–a total of 450 hours is required to get the given credits.
The designated Research Internship Supervisor from the host institute will monitor and analyse students' internship progress. The supervisor for the host organisation will conduct the evaluation, as well as a seminar presentation or viva-voce at the HEI, for which a panel of HEI specialists, including the supervisor, will allocate marks.
A centrally operated website will be introduced shortly, allowing Internship Provider Organization (IPO) to provide internships with particular eligibility requirements, students to search for internships of their choosing, internship allocation, along with records and feedback.
Students will register at the research internship portal to apply for research internships on their own or through their parent HEI's faculty mentor. Students will be chosen by host organisations based on their selection criteria after enrolling and applying for internships.
