UGC Declares 21 Universities Fake, Most From Delhi, UP & West Bengal; Read Details Here


New Delhi: University Grants Commission (UGC) has released a list of fake universities and institutions in India that do not have permission to offer courses to students. In the list, a total of 21 universities from around India have been declared fake and unrecognized by UGC.

In the list of fake universities in India, UGC has stated that a total of eight universities from the national capital, Delhi, four universities from Uttar Pradesh, and universities and educational institutes from other states have been functioning against the UGC Act 1956. 

The list also includes two universities from West Bengal, two from Odisha, and one university each from Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Puducherry, and Andhra Pradesh state. With this, the universities will no longer be termed as “UGC unrecognized”.

Informing about the decision, UGC informs that the universities that have been offering admission to students without following the UGC guidelines have now been declared fake. These universities will be termed as "self-styled, unrecognized institutions with no power to confer degrees"

From Uttar Pradesh, UGC has termed Gandhi Hindi Vidyapith from Prayag, National University of Electro Complex Homeopathy from Kanpur, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose University, and Bhartiya Shiksha Parishad from Bharat Bhawan as fake institutes.

From Delhi, All India Institute of Public and Physical Health Sciences (AIIPPHS), Commercial University Ltd, United Nations University, Vocational University, ADR-Centric Juridical University, and Indian Institution of Science and Engineering are included in the list. 

While the Indian Institute of Alternative Medicine and Institute of Alternative Medicine and Research are fake universities in West Bengal, Badaganvi Sarkar World Open University Education Society of Karnataka and St. John's University of Kerala are fake universities. 

Adding to the list, Raja Arabic University, Nagpur, from Maharashtra, Sree Bodhi Academy of Higher Education from Puducherry, and the Christ New Testament Deemed University of Andhra Pradesh have been declared fake.

Additionally, Vishwakarma Open University for Self-employment and Adhyatmik Vishwavidyalaya (Spiritual University) from Delhi, Nababharat Shiksha Parishad, and North Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology from Odisha are termed as “fake universities”.

As per the UGC notice, "universities can confer degrees only if the university is established under a Central, State/ Provincial Act or by an institution which is a deemed-to-be university”. Additionally, those empowered by an Act of Parliament can also award degrees to students.

“Students and Public at large are hereby informed that presently the following 21 self-styled, unrecognized institutions which are functioning in contravention of the UGC Act, have been declared as fake universities, and these are not empowered to confer any degree,” it reads.
