UGC Announces New Curriculum & Credit Framework For Undergraduate Programs


New Delhi: University Grants Commission (UGC) has recently announced the new curriculum and credit framework requirements for four-year undergraduate programmes (FYUP) on December 12, 2022.

In view of NEP's recommendations, the University Grants Commission has updated the Choice Based Credit system and created a new curriculum and credit structure for four-year UG courses, according to the UGC commission.

With this, students will have various multiple entry and exit options, flexible degree options with single major, double major, multi or interdisciplinary choices and a curriculum constructed with employability skills in addition to academic topics, as per the new FYUP framework.

All higher education institutions have been asked to apply the updated FYUP curriculum and credit system, according to UGC chairman Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar. He shared, “I hope this framework will serve as a guiding document and help universities and colleges in undertaking the revision of the curriculum".

New UG FYUP Curriculum Framework Highlights

Some of the key points of the newly announced UGC FYUP framework regulations are mentioned below:

  • UG degree programmes of either 3 or 4-year duration, with multiple entries and exit points and re-entry options.
  • UG certificate after completing 1 year (2 semesters) of study in the chosen fields of study, a UG diploma after 2 years (4 semesters), and a bachelor’s degree after a 3-year (6 semesters) programme of study will be offered to students. 
  • A 4-year bachelor’s degree (honours) after eight semesters programme of study if the student completes a research project in the 4th year of a bachelor’s degree (honours with research).
  • Credit-based courses and projects in the areas of community engagement and service, environmental education, and value-based education.
  • Global Citizenship Education and education for sustainable development.

One of the key components of the new curricular framework is that it will give students an opportunity to transition between offline, online, hybrid, and other forms of learning. It will also introduce holistic and multidisciplinary UG education that would help develop all capacities of human beings in an integrated manner.
