Earlier, Tripura was expected to receive an AIIMS after Assam as informed by Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha. However, the state’s health secretary, Dr. Debashis Basu has now stated that in the place of an AIIMS, a second RIMS will be constructed in the state.

Informing about the RIMS, he said, If the proposal for RIMS gets approval, it can only be set up after 2023. The state is looking forward to receiving approval from the health ministry and the concept has also been discussed with PM Modi in New Delhi, on September 05, 2022.

Dr. Basu said the central expert team would shortly inspect the state after gaining the ministry's approval. "We have a functioning plan, and once the application is accepted, labour and equipment will be integrated with the new facility," he said.

Adding to the statement, the Health Secretary, Dr. Debashis Basu remarked, "Tripura Medical College and Dr. BR Ambedkar Teaching Hospital might become Manipur's RIMS. We have already received the central government’s approval for RIMS."

Earlier, AIIMS was being developed in the state, and land in Hanpania, Bodhjungnagar, and Ambasa were discussed as campus locations. The state government has now decided to set up RIMS instead, for which a proposal has been sent to the central government.

In a press conference in Mahakaran on September 07, 2022, the health department secretary claimed the state government is sincere about protecting the people's health. Across the state, health services are being expanded to outlying areas.

He added that the department is working on a model to build an e-hospital in Agartala Government Medical College on a pilot basis and also aims to improve the diagnostic facilities to provide expert medical support to subdivision-level hospitals.

Meanwhile, the Tripura government has implemented cardiac surgery and medicines, neurosurgery, neurological care, surgical oncologists, and emergency treatment in the medical college, reducing patient referrals outside the state.

Following the data, Tripura has now a total of six state-based hospitals, six district-based hospitals, 14 sub-divisional hospitals, 21 social health centres, 118 primary health centres, and 199 sub-health centres in the state.
