Tamil Nadu Govt Asks Centre to Fill 24 Vacant MBBS Seats Immediately

New Delhi: The Tamil Nadu Government has asked the Centre to take required steps to fill the 24 MBBS seats that have remained vacant in the state-run colleges after four rounds of MBBS counselling. This was announced by the State Medical Education and Health Minister M. Subramaniam on Saturday, April 16, 2022.

MBBS seats in Top Medical Colleges in Tamil Nadu had already been filled. Out of the 812 seats of All India Quota, 24 have remained vacant. M. Subramaniam informed this to the reporters during an event concerning the launching of several projects related to a government hospital.

The Minister also has stated that the Health Department has sent a letter to the Centre in addition to urging the officials to fill the seats in MBBS as soon as possible.

The officials, however, have replied that there are almost 300 seats lying vacant across the entire country under the All India Quota. They have filed an affidavit regarding this in the Supreme Court, seeking more time to fill those vacant seats at the earliest.

In addition to the vacant MBBS seats, the Health Minister also has discussed the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. While discussing the presence of Coronavirus variants such as XE, in one person each in Gujarat and Maharashtra, the Centre has denied it and stated that there is no such case reported in Tamil Nadu.

The Minister had also interacted with the patients affected with Haemophilia. He also launched several health schemes worth INR 87.97 crores in 32 Government hospitals including Udumalpet, Valparai, Gobichettipalayam through a video-conference.

Earlier, Madras High Court upheld the Tamil Nadu Government's order to provide a 7.5% reservation to government school students who have cleared NEET. "We direct the state government to review the same in a period of five years as recommended by the commission and during the intervening period steps may be taken to improve the standard of education in government schools so that the reservation may not be further extended beyond five years,” the court said.

In 2020, the state government had also approved a bill in the state assembly for horizontal reservation to students in various undergraduate courses in medicine, dentistry, and AYUSH medicines.
