Tamil Nadu Government to Evaluate the Outcome of The Door-To-Door Schooling Initiative

New Delhi: The Tamil Nadu school education department has solicited bids from large corporations to evaluate the impact of Illam Thedi Kalvi, a volunteer-based door-to-door education initiative in the state (ITK). The study will take place between October 2022 and April 2023.

During the Covid-19 outbreak, the state established the project to address the learning gap.

The ITK programme has over 2 million volunteers in 2 million centres across 92,000 settlements in the state.

After school, these volunteers instruct pupils in Classes 1 through 8 in Tamil, English, Science, Mathematics, and Social Science for an hour and a half.

The private organisation that will evaluate the efficacy of the ITK programme will provide a report on the English, Tamil, and Mathematics proficiency of children in grades 3, 5, and 8. The corporation will also examine the retention, absenteeism, and enrollment of pupils in schools after the ITK was deployed.

“The purpose of the impact assessment,” according to school education officials, “is to receive accurate feedback on the project's flaws and implement corrective actions.”

“It is unnecessary to teach the same subjects immediately after regular classes,” according to R. Manikantan, a teacher at a public school in Tirupur, who told IANS, "The scheme is now irrelevant as regular classes have officially started. The government must enhance the education quality in schools rather than sticking to the ITK scheme."

The National Achievement Survey 2021 will serve as the project evaluation benchmark.
