New Delhi: The Mananala Nallaatharavu Mandram (MaNaM), a State government initiative for the mental health of medical college students through psychological support, was introduced on Thursday by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin.

He also handed off 75 updated ambulances for the GVK EMRI 108 ambulance service, which cost an estimated Rs 22.84 crore and were outfitted with cutting-edge life-saving technology. A centre for intermediate care for Institute of Mental Health (IMH) prisoners was also created by him.
The centre, which has 14 rooms, was built for Rs 2.36 crore. To provide housing for patients who have recovered but were rejected by their families, the Half Way Home, which was already operational at the IMH, was updated. According to Health Minister Ma Subramanian, "The MaNaM intends to prevent suicides and suicidal inclinations among the students and also to tackle their mental health concerns in all the 36 government medical colleges across the State."
Peer counsellors would be used in this programme to spot students who were experiencing mental distress and offer them counselling. For this, a team made up of a professor and ten students will be formed in each college, according to Subramanian.
MaNaM would be adopted initially in all medical institutions before being gradually extended to the colleges of arts and sciences, said Subramanian. 14416 is the MaNaM hotline number. The IMH was being upgraded to become a top-tier Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences. A three-dimensional rendering of the new building that was suggested was unveiled by the chief minister.
