St Stephen’s College and JMC Ask DU VC for Clarity on Minority Reservations

New Delhi: St Stephen’s College and Jesus and Mary College (JMC) have requested Delhi University to permit conducting interviews after the Central University Entrance Test (CUET) 2022, was declared as a primary entrance exam to be taken by the candidates for admission to DU courses.

Yogesh Singh, DU vice-chancellor said that the central varsity was evaluating the requests issued by St Stephen’s College to continue with the practice of maintaining interviews as part of its undergraduate (UG) admission process. St Stephen's College and JMC have written to the varsity's vice-chancellor seeking clarification on the admission procedure.

He added, that the colleges have sought around 15%, or some weightage, for holding interviews, which is being examined by the varsity. However, the administration of St Stephen’s did not respond to requests for comment.

15% Weightage can be Allocated to Interview Minority Students, Along with CUET: DU VC

DU vice-chancellor stated his opinion that admissions to 50% of the open seats at St Stephen’s must be done through CUET (Central Universities’ Entrance Test) and 15% of the weightage can be allocated to the interviews for minority students.

Speaking about St.Stephen's and JMC’s request, Singh said that minority institutions have some special privileges like taking 50% of the students from minority groups, which is acceptable by DU. However, these institutions also require some weightage for interviews.

The two colleges are minority institutions, with Christian students taking up half of the seats. Both institutions used to have their own admissions cut-offs, with St Stephen's additionally conducting interviews. Admissions to minority colleges, such as these two, will also be handled through CUET, according to DU's statutory bodies.

Further, the students intending to pursue courses in the college from the open quota must be admitted purely on the basis of CUET. However, the varsity will look into the college's request and take appropriate steps, Singh added. A total of 50% of the seats in minority colleges are reserved for students belonging to the community that runs the college.

The two Christian minority institutions under DU, are St Stephen’s College and Jesus and Mary College, who issue their own cutoff lists. The varsity issues a separate cutoff from the consolidated cutoff list during the admission cycle to these colleges.

As a part of the UG admission process, St Stephen’s also conducts interviews.

Earlier, last week, the academic council of DU passed a proposal, resulting in CUET score to be the sole criteria for admitting students to undergraduate courses in all the DU-affiliated colleges, including minority-run institutions, from the academic session 2022-23.

In a standing committee meeting held on March 17, 2022, the academic council decided that undergraduate admissions to all the minority colleges including DU-affiliated, St Stephen’s College and Jesus and Mary College, will be only done on the basis of the candidate's CUET score.

It was also decided that a separate merit list will be generated for unreserved and minority candidates according to the reservation policy during the centralised counselling.
