Rajasthan CM expresses the Need to Set Up More Medical Colleges in India

New Delhi: Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot stated that the Ukraine crisis has highlighted the extreme need to increase the number of medical colleges in India. The plight of the Indian students studying medicine in war-stricken Ukraine and the sheer number of students have already shown how many students tend to leave for abroad destinations simply because of the unavailability of seats in India, even after a good score.

The Ukraine crisis has given an opportunity to consider the possibility of the central and the state governments working together to significantly increase the number of medical colleges and medical seats in the country,” as stated by him.

Discussing the uncertain future of the students fleeing from Ukraine without being able to complete their study, the CM urged the authority to think from the perspective of those students and take a decision in a positive way.

Amendment of Rules of Medical Council of India:

Gehlot also highlighted the fact that every year, thousands of Indian students go abroad for studies. Most of them go to countries like China, Nepal, Ukraine, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Bangladesh, Kazakhstan as the expenses for medical studies are bearable, if not less there.

But when they return, they have to take the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE). Most of the children (more than 80%) are unable to pass this test and are also deprived of medical practice due to linguistic and curricular changes. In such a situation, it reduces the value of human resources of the country and all of them also suffer economic loss”, as said by him.

As per the scheme ‘Establishment of New Medical Colleges Attached with Existing District Referral Hospitals’, the UPA Government already started the scheme of opening Government Medical Colleges in each district.

CM also stressed on the fact that all the states and the Centre are required to think about the demand and availability of the medical seats, whether they are sufficient or not. If it is not sufficient, as the situation clearly shows, there is a need to revisit the earlier set up.

At present, there is an average of only one doctor per 1000 people in India and most of them are in cities. As per the global organisation standards, there are supposed to be 4 doctors per 1000 people. Therefore, to meet the increasing demand and to face any other pandemic of unknown nature, the country needs to increase the number, as said by Gehlot. To achieve this, there has to be a network of medical colleges, strewn across India.

To conclude, the CM has further urged the Centre to think about comprehensive ways that will allow the Indian students to study in India and that will be beneficial for the country’s economy as well.
