New Delhi: This year, a Government Medical College in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, declared psychological testing a requirement for admission. Previously, general health exams were administered for admission to the college's MBBS and MD-MS programmes.

Every applicant underwent a basic health assessment that included ENT (nasal, ear, and throat), ophthalmology, medical, radiography, and pathology tests. The female candidates also underwent a gynaecological checkup.
The psychiatric assessment of applicants is now necessary for enrollment to medical institutes, though, as of this year. Alok Upreti, the public relations representative for the Government Medical College in Dehradun, stated that a psychological exam would assess each student's behaviour, personality, and work capacity.
Thus to prevent any negative impacts on the students' education, he stated, "The goal of this exam is to deliver timely therapy to the pupils who are experiencing depression or other types of mental illness."
As per reports, three to four of such kids with issues with mental health were enrolled at Haldwani's Government Medical College each year.
They claimed that as a result, these pupils are unable to finish the required coursework on time, and a few of them require five to six years to finish their MBBS studies. Due to their inclination to use drugs, many students also struggle with mental health issues.
There are 100 seats available at Haldwani Medical College for the MBBS and MD-MS programmes, and the admissions process is now underway. In Uttarakhand, there are three private and four government-run medical schools.
