Proposal to Establish Medical And Engineering Colleges Soon: Minister KN Nehru

New Delhi: Minister of Municipal Administration KN Nehru has proposed establishing medical and engineering colleges in the city under the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) to expand students' access to higher education. After unveiling a new logo for the corporation-run schools in Chennai, he made this statement.

The suggestion was delivered to MK Stalin, the chief minister. Nehru stated that the ministry of transport had established medical and engineering institutes with 32% of places designated for the children of workers. Likewise, the GCC is capable of operating medical and engineering colleges.

Fewer than 5% of students from Chennai Schools enrol in engineering and medical institutes for advanced study. The establishment of medical and engineering institutions will expand higher education prospects for economically disadvantaged pupils of the city's 279 corporate schools.

There are around 1.04 lakh children from underprivileged backgrounds enrolled in Chennai schools. Various programs have been implemented to strengthen the school curriculum and foster students' leadership and decision-making skills.

The idea to build a medical college at the Corporation's Communicable Diseases Hospital in Tondiarpet was shelved by the AIADMK administration in 2014 after GCC authorities initiated the certification procedure necessary to create a medical college.

Nehru aired a documentary about Chennai schools that included information about their facilities and teaching practices. He also provided school ID badges to students. On Teacher's Day, the minister also awarded prizes to 395 teachers who had won various competitions.
