Odisha Govt Requests Centre for 2nd AIIMS in Sundargarh district


Odisha government has asked the Centre to set up the 2nd All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the state. Asit Tripathy, Chief secretary, has sent a written letter to the Union Health Ministry for the setup of the 2nd AIIMS in Sundargarh district as early as possible.

Tripathy stated Odisha has a fully functional AIIMS Bhubaneswar that has become one of the top AIIMS colleges in the country based on quality health care and medical education.

We have learned that a second AIIMS has been established in Bihar, and a similar proposal is under consideration in another state. In view of the health care requirements of Odisha, it is proposed that a second AIIMS may be considered for Western Odisha in the district of Sundargarh,” he further informed.

He also revealed that infrastructure for College and Hospital in Sundargarh is already available. As a CSR initiative, an agreement has been made between the Odisha government and NTPC to set up a Medical College and Hospital. 

Furthermore, the construction of the project has been finished, and the equipment procurement process is now going on. The hospital would include 500 beds, and the college will consist of 100 seats in MBBS. The AIIMS location would be easily accessible through road, railway, and air (Jharsuguda Airport).

The chief secretary added, “Therefore, this available infrastructure can be utilized for setting up of AIIMS within a short period of time. It will cater to a large Tribal population in the area and help in providing quality tertiary care in the backward area of Western Odisha.”
