Odisha Govt. Decides to Operate MCL’s Medical College in Talcher

On Thursday, Chief Minister Naveen Pattnaik accepted the proposal by MCL, paving the way for the medical college to begin its admission process next year following permission from the National Medical Commission.

The MCL has sent a proposal to the state government to take over the duty for operating the institution, based on a recent interaction between Union coal minister Prahlad Joshi and the CM.

Despite several attempts to find a taker, the MCL was unable to locate a private entity to run the college, although the infrastructure being complete since 2018. It had issued three tenders seeking qualified operators to administer the institution, but none of them had been successful. Its intended goal of enrolling students in 2019-20 was not met.

The MCL's request to start the institute was approved in principle by the CM. The medical college and hospital will be operated by the health and family welfare department, with MCL providing the required funds, according to a CMO statement.

The MCL spent over Rs 500 crore to build the institution on 20 acres of land granted by the state government. The hospital will have 500 beds and the medical college will have 100 seats for MBBS admission per year. The MCL will also contribute funding to the medical college and hospital's services.

This will be a significant step in providing high-quality healthcare to the residents of Angul and the neighbouring areas. According to a government release, the medical college would support the state government's efforts to boost the capability of medical education institutions in the state.

The Odisha government and the MCL inked a medical college agreement in 2014, after which the state allocated land. The building's development began in 2016 and was finished in 2018.
