NMC to Modify Competency Based Medical Curriculum to Address LGBTQIA+ Issues


New Delhi: The Expert Committee of the National Medical Commission (NMC) has released various recommendations for modifying the Competency-Based Medical Education MBBS curriculum to make it more LGBTQIA+ community friendly.

The expert committee of the commission has shared their suggestions for improving the MBBS curriculum with the heads of medical colleges, Registrars of Medical Universities, and the Directors of all the Medical Education Boards of India. 

The notice reads, "An Expert Committee was formed by UG Medical Education Board to address the issues related to LGBTQIA+ Community. After detailed discussion and deliberation, it has recommended making modifications to Competency-Based Medical Education curriculum," 

The committee has suggested modifications in modifications in the competencies of Forensic medicine subject. The subject numbers FM 3.16, FM 3.13, FM 3.17, FM 3.18 and PS 13.1 to 13.7 offered under both Forensic medicine subjects and psychiatric topics will now be modified.

Interested students, faculty members, experts and other medical board members can now check the suggestions made by the commission by visiting the official website of National Medical Commission (NMC) at nmc.org.

Earlier, in October 2021, the commission addressed the issues regarding the LGBTQIA community and changes in competencies of CBME curriculum. It stated that scientific books should not be biased against the other communities. 

The initative came after two NGOs, Queerythm and Disha submitted their written petition in Madras high court regarding the removal of discriminatory content from books. The court further ordered the NMC to issue guidelines for medical colleges and universities regarding the same.
