NMC Issues Pointers for Fresh MBBS Admissions; Classes to Start from November 15


New Delhi: National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued new guidelines for Fresh MBBS students from the academic year 2022-23. It has also released a notification stating the academic calendar of MBBS Batch 2022-26. 

According to the academic calendar published, classes for first year MBBS students will start from November 15. All other vacations or breaks and examination schedules will be arranged according to the affiliated universities of the respective colleges.

The commission has also announced that in electives, two blocks of 15 days each will be adjusted by colleges for pre-paraclinical branches and clinical branches. Supplementary exams shall be conducted with a gap of a month from the regular exams and results for the same should be declared within 15 days. 

The revised guideline forbids forming of any supplementary batches.

There have been changes in the elective subjects and structure of the academic calendar. Now, the students will have subjects in anatomy, physiology and biochemistry for 13 months from November 15, 2022 to December 15, 2023. The MBBS students in their second professional year will have subjects pathology, microbiology and pharmacology spanning over 13 months from December 16, 2023 to January 15, 2025.

The third year will be split into two parts where in part one students will be learning forensic medicine and toxicology and community medicine or PSM for a total of 10.5 months. The second part of their third year consists of 17.5 months which will begin in December 2025 and end in May 2027 in subjects including general surgery, general medicine, pediatrics, gynecology, ENT and Ophthalmology.

At the end of the MBBS course, students will have to complete a 1 year internship from June 1, 2027 to May 31, 2028. PG courses will begin from July 1, 2028 if a student wishes to apply for post graduate courses.

NMC guidelines for MBBS batch 2022-23

  • The guidelines state that notifications for exams and vacation schedules are subject to change and will be arranged according to the affiliated universities.
  • In regard to electives, two blocks of 15 days each are to be adjusted by respective colleges for pre and/or paraclinical branches and clinical branches.
  • Supplementary exams with a gap of one month from regular exams are to be conducted and results are to be declared within 15 days.
  • There will be no supplementary batches.
  • All remaining guidelines will be in accordance with Graduate Medical Education Regulations (GMER) 1997.
