NMC Guidelines on Fees for 50% Seats in Private Medical Colleges to be Implemented from Next Academic Session

New Delhi: The National Medical Commission (NMC) authorities have notified that guidelines on fees for 50% seats in private medical colleges will be effective from the next academic session.

According to the reports, earlier, the NMC issued a guideline mentioning that the fees of 50% seats in private medical colleges and deemed universities should be on par with that of the government medical colleges of a particular state. As a result, this rule will be effective from the next academic session 2022-23.

The fee fixation committees of each state are required to mandatorily follow the NMC guidelines for their respective medical colleges, the report said.

On February 3, the council released an office memorandum notifying that it has decided that the fees of 50% seats in private medical colleges and deemed universities should be on par with that of government medical colleges of specific state or Union Territory.

As per the NMC office memorandum, the primary advantage of this fee structure would first be made available to the candidates who have availed the government quota seats but it will be limited to the extent of 50% of the total sanctioned strength of the institute.

However, if the government quota seats are comparatively lesser than 50 percent of the total sanctioned seats, the remaining candidates would avail the benefit of having to pay a fee equivalent to that in government medical colleges, based solely on merit, the memorandum stated.

According to section 10 (1) (i) of the National Medical Commission (NMC) Act, 2019, the panel will frame guidelines for the determination of fees and all other charges for 50 percent of the seats in private medical institutions and deemed-to-be universities governed under the provisions of this legislation.

The Centre had requested the erstwhile Board of Governors in supersession of the erstwhile MCI to prepare the draft fee-fixation guidelines for the consideration of the NMC, as and when constituted. Later, the BoG-MCI was constituted by the expert committee on November 23, 2019, and later, by the NMC.

Recently, the NMC invited applications from the medical institutions across India to seek recognition against the increased intake of seats or renewal of recognition of MDMS, DM, M.Ch Courses.

Earlier, last month, the academic session for the current MBBS batch 2021-22, started from February 14, which will conclude in June 2027, with a mandatory internship.
